I reckon there's a clear Top 3 since the turn of the century:
1. GAJ
2. Franklin
3. Judd

Pendlebury in the next rung, but has the potential to be considered on the same rung as Judd (and therefore ahead of the likes of Selwood, N. Riewoldt, Martin, Fyfe, Dangerfield, Hodge) depending on what else he can achieve between now and the end of his career.
I'd put him in with Selwood, Hodge and Martin in that next group just below your top 3.

Yep, this is a fair assessment.

I reckon there are half a dozen players who could be ranked anywhere between 4 and 9, depending on your weighting of leadership, finals performances and longevity.

But I truly believe the top 3 stand alone.

I think Buddy has 12 - 8 AA selections plus squad in 2021, 2013, 2009 and 2007

But 10 seasons is still an absolute absurd record of excellence and consistency.
Thanks.

12 is very impressive from Buddy, and another reason for him being the clear #2 since the turn of the century.

I might do some research to see how many others have double figure squad selections, there can't be too many.

The AA squad has only been a thing since 2007. So we're only looking at players with a peak in the last 15 years.

I think Pendles and Buddy are the only ones with 10+.

Robert Harvey might have had 11 if squads were a thing back in his day.

Blokes like Greg Williams and Carey would be in the squad every year

Pendlebury Stats

2nd most disposals in the history of the game (most likely will be number one on Friday night)
1st most handballs in the history of the game
2nd most tackles in the history of the game.
6th most Inside 50s in the history of the game
6th most Clearances in the history of the game
5th most contested possession in the history of the game
2nd most uncontested possession in the history of the game
3rd most goal assists in the history of the game

He is quickly closing in on being number one in many of these categories. For example, only needs 25 tackles to go past Selwood to have the most tackles in history.
I didn't know these stats, I've watched a lot of football. I think it shows that he isn't a damaging footballer. Sure he is slick and skilful, doesn't hurt you, at least he hasn't in the last 7 years.

Interesting to think how his career would have gone if he ended at the club he should have, Richmond.

Remove those ridiculous priority picks that gifted the Pies Pendles undeservedly and with his pick, he would have been a tiger instead of Oakley Nicholls.

Imagine adding Pendles to the Tigers premiership line up the last few years!

Cmon. The Richmond flogs turn every thread into a Dusty wank fest as it is. Don’t encourage them. 😂

Carey made the AA team in 93-96 and 98-00.

Outside of those years, I think he only makes a squad in 92.

And he (together with Ablett Snr) is probably the best footballer I have ever seen.

Having a peak of 10-12+ years is really hard. Staying elite until your 30s, consistent every year, having hardly any injuries along the way.

I'm sure there'd be some legends of the games that would have made 10+ squads, but it's not as easy as it sounds.

He has never been referred to as the greatest player in the game at any point.

When watching him play he doesn't do anything outstanding to me like a GAJ, Martin, Dangerfield, Judd, Franklin. sorry if that's harsh but that's sort of players you got to compare him to.

I would say by far his biggest strength has been he's longevity in the game at performing at a high level.

Champion player him & Joel Selwood would be probably rated in the same standing.

Still not sure he is Collingwood's greatest modern player though, I remember Nathan Buckley and he seemed to get a hold of teams a lot more.

I think people have forgotten how good Pendles was because he's played for so long. Finished top 5 in the Brownlow on 3 occasions and despite not getting that close in recent years, has still been lethal with his foot skills and an incredible leader.

Have him right behind the GAJ, Buddy, Judd group

Definitely a great of the game. Should be a walk-up HOF-er

But personally, I would take prime Dane Swan over prime Pendles. JMO.
