Season 2022

The Division 2 finals campaign kicks off this Sunday afternoon. Both games are a flip of the coin, as I’ve always maintained that all four sides can beat anyone on their day. The qualifying final between minor premiers Kinglake and “Dad’s Army” (Powelltown) at Healesville is sure going to be a belter. Powelly’s older list made it look easy on its small home ground, but playing on a bigger oval like Healesville is going to be quite the test. In saying that, the Demons have selected close to a full-strength side, naming superstar forward Michael Fowkes at centre half-back. He adds some much-needed height and experience to their fragile back half. I will be tipping the Lakers by 11 points and in doing so, will make their first grand final since 2016. On the same day, Yarra Junction take on Warburton at Woori Yallock in the elimination final. Both sides are very evenly matched on paper, so I can see this one being a close contest. Whilst the Eagles defeated the Burras in two out of the three meetings this year, I am backing in James Iacono's men to get the job done. High on Iacono's agenda will be nullifying Junction’s three star players - David Johnson, Sam Morton and Ewan Wadsworth - and I am expecting Mitch Bonuda to be the difference by having a huge impact in front of goal. A Powelly and Warby preliminary final would be a mouth-watering and fiery clash to say the least, given that Iacono, who coached the Demons to a prelim in 2019, was controversially replaced by Jarrod Bayliss for the 2021 season.

Any news on where each of this weeks Premier Division senior and reserve grade games are being played? I believe it’s Emerald and Narre but which game is where?

I’d suggest it’s a thinly failed swipe at Powelltowns age. His previews and reviews of Powelltown games have been very well written. Includes the reserves which is a welcome change on here.

Powelltown, or as I’ve infamously called them throughout this season, “Dad’s Army”, are an outfit filled with many talented older heads. Much like the mighty Hawks of ’91, many pundits wrote them off due to their ageing list. The rest, as they say, is history, with Hawthorn going on to win the AFL premiership that year. I was proven wrong on Sunday afternoon, as I thought Powelly would come undone on the bigger ground of Healesville. You cannot buy experience and that came in quite handy for Powelltown against Kinglake, especially when the game was on the line in the final term.

The Demons will deservedly start favourites in the imminent big dance and they undoubtedly have one hand on the premiership cup. If coach Jarrod Bayliss was a book then he’d be a bestseller. Bayliss played a big part in Wandin’s 2015 premiership-winning side and also coached Park Orchards to a flag in 2017. Wherever he goes, he brings success. Taking Powelly to the promised land for the first time since 1989 will be another remarkable achievement for Bayliss, who will go down as a legend of Yarra Valley football when he calls it a day.

The preliminary final between the Lakers and Eagles is going to be a beauty. Full credit to Yarra Junction on the weekend. I thought Warburton would prevail, but the classy David Johnson, who snagged six majors, had other ideas and guided Junction to a gutsy four-goal win. Whilst I would love to see rivals Powelltown and Junction play off in the grand final; I believe Kinglake will bounce back and win in a tight contest. I also expect the Lakers’ reserves to topple the Rebels, but they will need a miracle the following week against the undefeated Burras.

Sounds like he is or has been inside the 4 walls with the information thats provided

Valley Maestro do you know why Powelltowns reserves didn't play Sunday and yarra junctions did ?? I see they finished 20 odd % ahead of yarra junction yet did not play in the elimination final on Sunday??

The league could not have scripted a better first final at Emerald this Sunday.

Two traditional rivals that never fail to put on a great showcase everytime they play each other.

The weather looks great and expect a bumper crowd.

Looking forward to it

Match ratio is the reason.

Really ?? Since when this been the case? I even read in the leagues by laws that can be found on there website dated may 2022 that if there are 2 sides on equal points the team with highest percentage will take part in the finals series

I feel for the players that miss the side of 22 to not be able to put best foot forward in re selection by having a good game in the clubs reserves

Wasn't this introduced due to the merge of Broadford and Yea. I remember reading this back at the start of the seaon and someone explained to me the reason. Looks like clubs knew for a while this was the case.

Woofwoof1 all clubs were fully aware that percentage wasn’t the decider, it would be matches played between the 2 teams if they were equal on points.
Yarra Junction reserves won 2, Powelltown 1 in the 3 games they played against each other so YJ certainly earnt their spot on the reserves finals.
Powelltown reserves lost first 7-8 games so only have themselves to blame on not being a part of reserves finals.
