Guthrie update:

That means he's played his last game I'd say. I wonder if at some point we will put him on the inactive list and use a msd pick mid season? Then again we seem to not like the msd much.

Who is available in the msd?

Last year i was saying we should have got Harry Boyd in the msd (see how he goes at St kilda). This year it might be a similar type to look for depending on how sdk goes in the ruck maybe?

That sounds like virtually done to me. I doubt he will announce an early year retirement given the chance we might play finals but realistically you would think this is cams last year (no contract extension).
I really hope he does a team thing and if he can't get back to some what of a good standard he puts the boots up before the chance of us to use at mid season draft picks

You would imagine him or someone like Duncan etc wouldn't be averse to pulling the pin mid season (or going inactive) if they know the club wants an msd pick.

He looks a prospect doesn't he.
6' 10" in the old measure , competitive and athletic. Just needs time in the gym to fill out and build core strength.
Our young talls have put on size this year - Neale , SDK and COS all looked in fantastic knick yesterday :thumbsu:
Mentioned the other day F2G: that between SDK, Neale, Conway and COS we have 'easily the best group of young talls in the AFL but also in my time of following Geelong over many years, this is also 'collectively' our best crop of young players since that 2003 period........ and that's 'priceless' and is so, so exciting.

It’s not looking good that’s for sure, but a two week recovery and training in a month gives him a smidgen of hope..

Who is training a month after Achilles surgery? It's usually 6 months minimum.

It's a clean up. It's not a full-blown achilles tear.

Still doubt that he's coming back though. Reports read like he's hardly trained in months, and that's off the back of hardly playing in two years either.

Even if he's back in a month, it's going to take weeks (or even months) on top of that to build him back up again....and that's if he can hold up physically.

My son was back after 4 months. But he didn't have surgery or the resources that Guthrie has.
My son had the option of surgery to recover faster. But because he was only 14 it wasn't seen as the smart option as the tear was so small.

Someone I know (obviously older) ruptured theirs, the doctors debated surgery v natural, but decided surgery was probably no faster and was slightly riskier re: re-occurrence.

Took 7 months to heal, and definitely too ginger to play sport even then.

This is clearly the final throw at the stumps. Doesn't want to exit the game wondering if he could have ever got up and going again. It's the longest of long shots but I for one am glad they're giving it a go.

He was clearly never coming good by just resting up and hoping it would all settle down. And he obviously still has the fire burning brightly enough within to want to go through surgery and see if he can somehow get back out there.

Kudos to him for digging in one more time and I wish him all the best for this final shot at a return.

When do we expect to see an official club medical update? My rough view and throw at the dart board on our medical status is

Toby Conway (Back) - 10 weeks
Cam Guthrie (Achillies) - Indefinite
Tanner Bruhn (Finger) - 1-2 weeks
Bailey Smith (Knee Soreness) - 1-2 weeks
Ollie Henry (Back) - ?????
Xavier Ivisic (syndesmosis) - 6 weeks
Shaun Mannagh (Foot) - ?????
Keighton Matofai-Forbes - ?????

What makes you think Smith is 1-2 weeks away when the club said he will definitely play against Lions, and Smith himself said he could’ve played pre season vs Essendon?

Scott has said Smith will definitely play.
It was a knee knock to the other knee. Just play them.

Chris Scott has been known to tell a few porky pies about players selection status.

Hopefully this one is a double bluff and Smith is good as gold.

I have learnt never to fully trust what he says about injured players though.

Injury update 5/03/2025 from AFL.com.au

Bruhn - Finger, no time frame given for his return.
Conway - Doing back conditioning, and expected to get back to full training in the next 2-3 weeks
C Guth - Has had Achilles surgery and working his way to doing football drills
Mannagh- working on upping his running after a foot stress injury, could be back as early as round 2 (listed as 2-3 weeks)
Xavier Ivisic - 4-6 weeks with an ankle injury
Jack Martin - Made it through the VFL game unscathed
Smith - Remains on track to play round 1

Yep - we still have ruck issues for what year in a row now?
I plan to get to a few VFL games. I will be keeping an eye on big Joe Pike, and the recent draftees.
