The 27th season of the Sweet FA gets underway on Sunday afternoon, after a lengthy off-season that saw the mighty South Australians lift the State of Origin title. The Mount Buller Demons will look to defend their flag, new signings will look to impress, and we can all look forward to some cracking Round 1 fixtures.
The Baghdad Bombers, growing ever stronger, will take on the Gumbies in their opening round of Season 27 and their first game of 2019. Both teams are coming off a disappointing season for different reasons; the Bombers had a horrid start to the season that eventually saw them miss the finals. whilst the Gumbies were once again plagued by team sheet issues and mass inactivity.
SIGNINGS
The Bombers continue to add more and more signings to their already strong team, adding 5 new faces to the line-up for Season 27. They absolutely pillaged the struggling Dragons, nabbing experienced duo WFL (an ex-Baghdad rookie) and VSTone with the domino effect from those signings leading to the defection of last season's most prolific poster in WaynesWorld19. They also sensationally poached an inbound Dragons rookie in CJMB, before wrapping up their business by bringing back club legend boncer34. Leaving the club was fringe player nahnah, and the now journeyman _Cayz_, heading to the Roys and Demons respectively.
Meanwhile the Gumbies' net transfer gain is yet to be decided under new captain BRAB. They have taken the much-celebrated approach of the Season 26 Bears and signed 5 rookies in snozulu, Orasia Fantazio, Vdubs, THE THIN MAN and acuguy, all of which have yet to prove their mettle and in fact have been rarely sighted. Leaving the club are a trio of veterans in SM, Quivorir and RU_, whilst S25 EKA winner BLERN is amongst a trio of delisted players. This leaves them with one of the least experienced teams in the league and they will be heavily relying on some of their rookies acclimatising to the league.
KEY PLAYERS
With the leadership role now passed onto TheCoach16 and Tony Lynn 15, expect KohPhi to have a big S27 especially after he was one of the best players in the recent State of Origin series. With such a strong playing list, it's hard to guess who will be in the premium positions but expect the likes of Matty411, WFL and boncer34 to have a strong game.
Meanwhile, the Gumbies list is looking threadbare which could prove to be a plus and potentially uncover some potential guns that wouldn't get a look in at other clubs. New co-captain BRAB will almost certainly line up in the midfield again in his quest for the Mobbs, whilst roo2macca is coming off a brilliant State of Origin campaign where he was arguably the player of the tournament including a best on ground performance in the Grand Final. Jivlain willl more than likely line up at full forward once more, looking to build on his debut season, whilst DERO and @jmoowan will also likely hold strong positions in the team.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Season 26, Round 16: Gumbies FFC 17.9 (111) def. Baghdad Bombers 12.9 (81) at Shanghai Stadium
The Gumbies have the recent form over the Bombers, winning by exactly 5 goals in China in the penultimate round of Season 26 and putting the Bombers' finals chances to bed. With star ruck rover BRAB suspended, Fryer Tuck (25 disposals, 7 marks) and DERO (28 disposals, 6 tackles) ran the show for the Gumbies with NSWCROW and Jivlain combining for 9 goals in the forward line. Tony Lynn 15 played a lone hand for the Bombers in a terrific all round performance, collecting 24 disposals, 8 marks, 7 tackles and a goal, although he was somewhat helped by ruckman Matty411 who had an impressive 15 hitouts with his 17 disposals.
PREDICTION
Bombers by 14 points.
