Fun story - we had a student teacher from France in year 8. One day he was helping a kid with something who responded with 'thanks mate!'. The teacher was moritifed and said 'don't call me mate!'. Sensing his discomfort, and being a bit of a shit stirrer, the kid replied 'what's wrong, mate?'. This was met with a fiercer response of 'don't call me mate!'. When we quizzed our actual French teacher as to why he was so weirdly adamant about it - turns out mate in French meant more of your life partner and being called this by a 12 year old kid wasn't exactly making poor old Jean-Luc feel comfortable.
