Watching On the Couch and they showed that play where Daniel’s took advantage and kicked the ball off the ground after a free to the Giants from a few angles.

That being said, anyone know what the free was for because their was zero in anything related to the marking contest? Fortunately Daniel’s plays on but looked very sus whatever the free was.

Some great analysis here from Jeff White, ostensibly about Will Ashcroft but also highlights Oscar's influence in starting the comeback.

Our true barometer?

This here is a learnings opportunity for me. Love the analysis. I don't have x, but I'm going to try to hunt this Jeff white person so I can watch whatever he posts.b

This is Jeff White who used to play for Melbourne, used to be a great player.

Holding from memory? I don't remember being too offended by it.

Well, that got me up and about and interested! :grinv1:

Admit to not watching most of the game, just couldn't, it was terrible but was checking scores. Watched the last qtr thinking could they possibly.....then when Joe kicked that last goal I scared the hell out of my dog when I screamed and jumped off the couch, she ran off to the other room..

The most animated I've been for a while...it felt real good :)
We might get you to watch the whole prelim 😉

Nah you were 💯 correct…some of the commentary was brutal and the Lions showed why you never leave a game early…literally or figuratively!
2 of my 5 "mates" left at half time. They will not be invited back.

Never. Leave. Early.

I said at the time do we even know what the free kick was for? I'm always a little suspicious as well when they never show the replay. That free kick and the mark they paid to Hogan when he clearly shoved Payne in the back were very poor decisions that were right in front of goal.

One of the things I really noticed in the replay, especially in the last few minutes, was Rayner repeatedly forcing his way into a contest, putting his body on the line, in ways that did not necessarily earn him possessions but nonetheless contributing to the ball continuing to move in our direction. Again and again, up and down the ground.
Agree with giving his all but I had a different view of it.

The last or second last play when Rayner went hard for footy I feared he had made contact below knee's and given away another free. By then he already conceded 2 frees to Himmelberg and I worried if we lose this one he would've been the focus.

I'm glad we won but Rayner just needs to be a bit more careful when things seem to be not working for him. It's easy to say from my perspective, I can only appreciate him trying so hard to contribute and help us win.

I thought Oscar was pretty poor early and Briggs was giving their mids first look at stoppages. O definitely seemed to adjust. I don't know why his first instinct is to give away front position, especially at boundary throw-ins - they're going to drop short more often than not.

Poor old Lloydy has been reduced to picking one or two moments out of a game relating to a guy that isn’t 100% playing on the best forward in the comp.

Troubling times for whichever producer is tasked with putting this together for Lloydy to read.

I'm actually waiting for us to win the Granny now, and Lloydy and his mates start the highlights of the game of all the mistakes we made during it & discussing what we could've done better.
I watch and record all footy stuff and I think you're onto something. For whatever reason, the Lions and our players are clearly on the nose for most of the AFL media as we just seem to be such an easy target where they're happy to batter us with double standards and shit on us at any chance they can that they would never employ on the likes of Collingwood, Carlton, Hawthorn etc.

Perhaps we've been up for too long and don't know our place in the VFL landscape but it is tiresome and unfair.

Still bitter from 2001 Grand Final when the Lions supporters sung "Lloydy's a wank*r"

If there only wasn't another team of very talented and determined opposition players trying to win the game, the game would be easy.

Bernie Quinlan was his favourite player growing up, but as soon as joining Essendon things have gone down hill. He's still upset about the Essendon 'dynasty' of 1999-2001 - major choke in the 1999 PF, dominant 2000 and then getting smashed by the Lions in 2001 GF.

Payne was below average for 3 quarters of the game.
Appeared to me he could not jump much off the ground to influence the contest.
Not unsurprising considering the number of missed games then the injury upon his return.

I am sure if we lost that game a lot on here would be giving him a hard time instead of finding some excuses.
There would have been talk of we should have gone with a fit Joyce etc etc.
Fagan said he went to Payne at 3/4 time and mentioned he was having an average time of it for 3 quarters.
But there is one quarter to go and that's enough time to make an impact. Something along those lines.
He did respond and had a solid last quarter.

To date Payne has not handled injury as well as others. Needs more time than most to get back his confidence.
Nothing wrong with this it's just some bodies need extra time to recover.

That game is now in the past and Payne should have got enough confidence in his last quarter effort to have a better game v Cats.
One proviso on that is, he has to have pulled up well and train better this week.
I hope he is back to 95% as he will have to play well against the very good big Cats forwards.

That's why I like games against NM.

A very astute observation.

A lot of us (me included) would be well served bearing this in mind instead of losing our minds anytime our team doesn't win by the expected 15 goals or even shock, horror...........loses.

From my experience, this is a very Essendon (all big Melbourne clubs) supporters approach to following football. Wallow in the easy victory.

Not to say we of the less entitled clubs don’t fall for this trap from time to time.
