This morning on SEN 1116, Tim Watson blasted the Melbourne media stating it was rubbish that melbourne papers had a few pages dedicated to the retirement of NRL legend Andrew Johns. Timmy stated that if a player of similar ilk in AFL retired, Sydney papers wouldnt even write a column dedicated to their retirement, let alone a few pages.

What do you reckon. If Hirdy, Bucks etc retired, do you think it would even rate a mention. I strongly doubt it. Us Melbournians are so accepting of other sports, unlike Sydney.

Watson fails to recognise that Johns is arguably the greatest player of all time - as much as we like to believe there is an equivalent in the AFL, there isn't.

His comment is precisely the reason I don't listen to SEN anymore.

I haven't seen the paper but 'a few' pages is probably too many.

Having said that, I hate RL but JOhns was just about the best their ever was.

There are 10 Buckley's and Hird's every generation.

Rupert Murdoch owns the Herald Sun, Foxtel, Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm.
Why is this even an issue? The man can put whatever he likes in his rubbish newspaper.
The guy has made billions collecting pennies off morons.

so what your saying is that premiership captains Michael VOSS and James Hird, and other players such as Nathan BUCKLEY deserve nothing? I think you missed the point of his comments. His point wasnt how great Andrew Johns is or isnt, it was the lack of coverage AFL gets in Sydney papers

They'll get recognition in Sydney, probably about the same as Johns got here. Why does it matter if they get the same level of recognition or not?

you reckon? Have you seen how much AFL is in Sydney papers? Have a look at todays herald sun and age and then imagine a legend of the AFL having the same coverage. Would never happen.

Doesnt this paper coverage go to show that victorians will follow anything and are more capable of learning and following another code than those rugby league ****ers who seem content screaming " thats gold" and "go broncs"

Thats definitely true. I live in Sydney and its usually a half page on the swans, and maybe a paragraph at the end of a story about other afl news.
They are unaccepting and i believe its a campaign.

No.

I think it more highlights the point that if AFL is bumped off the landscape for all of 2 pages in one paper, someone will have a whinge.

Campaign? What rubbish. Sydney papers put what people want to read about in the paper, and Sydneysiders want to read abour rugby league. Simple. The vast majority do not give a stuff about the AFL. Exactly the same reason why Melbourne papers are loaded with AFL news every day. I'm yet to meet a person who's convinced there's a campaign against rugby league in Melbourne.

I'll take 5 of each thanks!

That really is a stupid comment. Buckley is rated by many as the best ever Collingwood player & Hird is certainly amongst the best ever Bombers. 2 clubs that have been around for over 100 years.

The murdoch press push RL down peoples throat. If you want a view of where each sport sits in Sydney, you'd be better off looking at the Sydney Morning Herald, although that is bias toward rugby union in some ways, as most of its reader-ship own at least one tweed jacket with leather arm patches.

Todays telegraph is the "Souvineer edition" of Johns retirement. Front and back pages plus plenty in between. Expect flowing tributes for the next week not seen since Princess Di died.

Imagine if Joey got hit by a bus this week. The telegraph would print a special 100 page tribute edition with special plastic blow-up Joey figurines only $2 with each paper sold.

If a Buckley or Hird retired there would be about 15-20 articles over the following 3-4 days. It'd also be front page of the Newspaper for a couple of days.

I doubt that Andrew Johns would get the same ammount of coverage in the sydney papers that Buckley would get in the Melbourne papers.

So it sorta works out the same..

+ who gives a hoot?

dont know or care about andrew johns but timmid watsgoinon has no idea about anything.

he's like the challenged version of dermie.

I agree with you totally. It is funny how when you travel into the bordering state of NSW, you lose 99.9% of the AFL media coverage. I doubt sydney siders lose that much coverage of the NRL going into Vic.

I have no doubts Sydneysiders want to read NRL. But im sure there are more AFL fans in Sydney than NRL fans in melbourne.

i think the storm are getting more coverage, especially in the HS (of course).

personally its not a bad thing that theres a bit of coverage of johns' retirement cause it serves to educate us melburnians more about his legacy in RL.

I doubt Bucks retirement would get twenty odd articles in a paper? He would get half the coverage of his retirement that Johns got in Sydney. However you miss the point. The point is Johns got a **** load of media here, Bucks would get sweet f all in Sydney.

And who gives a hoot? obviously a few do given the amount of posts.

The only reason they want to read about it, is because none of them can be bothered to got to games.

Might not be a campaign, but having the clowns who run newspaper and TV also involved so heavily in Rugby League definitely is a factor on how much RL is "force-fed" to Sydneysiders.

And yes, I do believe it is "force-fed"....

Again i agree. I read the NRL stories and quite enjoy the coverage. Johns was a legend no doubt. The issue is this is not occurring in NSW. How is the game supposed to grow with little coverage?
