Frustrated Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale confirmed St Kilda football boss Chris Pelchen had approached the Tigers' Daniel Richardson informing him that the Saints were interested in Williams. ''I'd like to think that St Kilda would accept and acknowledge the fact that Mark [Williams] is an extremely valued and highly competent employee of the Richmond Football Club,'' said Gale.

What are they going to do? Give us a stern word?

Sure, we wouldn't be putting Richmond in a great position. But what's complaining to the media going to do?

Have to wonder if they complained to Caro or if Caro sought them out. Latter strikes me as more likely

Got a good laugh out of that. It could not be more clear that Choco wants to be a senior coach, what are they going to do? Force him to stay as a development coach?

If Choco wants the job and the club want him to be coach, he'll be coach.

Richmond can't do jack shit if he has a clause in his contract that he can leave if a senior job awaits him.

Not that clear cut, the clause will have conditions on it, chances are, with mutual consent being needed.

Contracts, in general, can be terminated by mutual consent. If we dig our heels in, he won't be going anywhere, unless we're compensated.

See Sydney and Dew as a pertinent example.

Williams is still under contract.

You aren't seriously comparing the Dew situation to this. Dew is the Swans midfield coach and the job he wanted was a senior assistant in a succession plan. Dew wouldn't have been the Dees coach for at least two seasons. Here, Williams is a development coach at the tiges and the available job at the saints is as senior coach starting immediately. It may not be ideal the timing and I can see how you would be frustrated, I would be too. I am sure however, that your club will not block him becoming a senior coach again to keep him as a development coach.

Ok,you can have Watters and our 3rd round pick...

If St Kilda want him as senior coach, and he wants to be coach, there isn't a snowballs hope in hell of us standing in his way. It's as simple as that.

Dew and Sydney isn't an example. Melbourne wanted him part of a succession plan not senior coach. We possibly want Choco as senior coach, we'll get him if we choose him.

nah, i wouldn't worry too much about that. if anything it may be partly to draw out a response from the coaches association to say that they won't allow a club to stand in the way of an assistant taking up a senior position elsewhere, as they have done in the past when the likes of eddie have whinged about it. just in case st kilda get cold feet.

caro loves choco (i'm pretty sure he feeds her stories) and has been campaigning for him to get another top job for years. mark my words, she'll laud it as a great appointment if he gets the job, and likely be scathing if he doesn't.

Forcing a coach to remain at your club when he wants to be elsewhere. Yea right real smart that is.

Williams has to want to come to us in the first place. Hope he does, but it might be that he is happy where he is.

I'm sure if they offered a few hundred grand a year more he'd be alot happier! The Tigers would surely realise that - if he covets a senior gig - preventing someone from earning that much money isn't going to result in a fully committed employee. But I'd still expect them to use whatever tools are available (including Caro) within reason to ensure their 2014 season isn't disrupted - whilst I'm unsure of their depth, they seem to have got a good first choice squad of players together at the right age. They would be preparing for a serious tilt.

ST KILDA will ramp up its search for a senior coach when its selection committee including Tom Harley meets tomorrow.

Harley, who yesterday stood down from his role as leader of the AFL's NSW/ACT operation, comes in high regard after helping Port Adelaide secure mastermind Ken Hinkley last year.

The Saints find themselves in an awkward spot with no senior coach, first to fourth-year players back at training, while the national draft on November 21 looms large.

The leading candidates for the Saints' job include club champion Robert Harvey, Richmond assistant Mark Williams, former Carlton coach Brett Ratten and axed Essendon coach Matthew Knights.

Port Adelaide senior assistant Alan Richardson remains in contention however it appears unlikely he will want to leave Alberton.

Richmond is reportedly frustrated with St Kilda sounding out Williams with preparations for the Tigers' 2014 campaign well underway.

"I've been impressed with what they've done (so far)...," Harley told SEN this morning.

"The uniqueness of it is it's a very late appointment and that might ruffle a few feathers of clubs and understandably so.

"But there has to be enough talent out there in the AFL community to find a really solid coach."

Choco has a contract with RFC for 1 more year, and he may be forced to honour that contract.

Dew & Eade were both forced to honour their contracts when Melbourne came knocking.

Stk is disrupting our preseason by trying to get a coach in November. Things would have been different if your coaching situation had of been resolved in Sept/Oct. All other teams coaches are now in place by this time of the year so it hampers our ability to get a good replacement if Choco leaves.

It's time to get professional about footy Saints.

There's a get-out clause for assistant coaches if the opportunity to be a senior coach becomes available, Dew wasn't offered a senior job and Eade decided to stay at Collingwood.

If you're talking about the assistant spot at Melbourne, that's a completely different kettle of fish.

Every assistant has a get-out clause in their contract if a senior coaching job comes up. Choco's contract would be no different. No, assistants can't necessarily walk to another club as an assistant coach if they're under contract, like Roos wanted Dew to.

If losing one member of staff is going to damage your club so much, maybe its time you reviewed your structures.

Eade was in line for a senior coaching job but then got heat from Eddie, so then he mysteriously decided to stay on hmmm.

As I've said, Stk timing in all this is amateurish stuff.
I think it was more he could see where the Melbourne job was heading rather than your version.

Eade was given Collingwood's blessing to be our senior coach, we just got someone better. He was never in line for the senior assistant job.

Richmond also gave Choco their blessing to join us.

Clubs don't fight for their assistants if the tob job is on offer. Every single coach has been there, and they know what it's like.
