Chelt the big improvers. They will push top the 2 next year with a gap to 4th & 5th.at this VERY early stage..
Looks like they've done a bit or work down at JBO and recruited some pretty good players. Anything but a top 3 finish could considered a "fail" so the pressure is certainly on the list and great for the competition. The biggest query, as I see it, is Dingley. A young list will have to grow fairly quickly after losing the Freemans and Morgan without a lot of quality coming in so you would expect to see the youth stepping up if they are to challenge. Another observation was that supporters seemed to think they'd won the flag at 3/4 time in the Preliminary only to see the Doggies blow them off the park. That sort of getting ahead of oneself can often be infectious. In response St.Pauls were measured and calculating and responded as champion teams do. The Dingoes should learn from that.

Whilst I'm banging on as the font of all knowledge I would predict at this early stage that the top 4 is probably already settled unless there is a massive improvement from a club out of left field. St. Pauls will always be in the mix, East Brighton will threaten, Cheltenham will in amongst it and Dingley should be around the mark but with reservations. 5th spot should be determined out of Clayton, StKilda City and Chelsea Heights. The great unknown is Bentleigh but I expect they'll make a pretty good fist of promotion and will challenge for a top 5 berth at times. Heatherton and East Malvern's fate will be determined by their results against each other but barring miracles one of them will be in Div 2 in 2015

Happened quite a bit in 2013 where Doggies were slack and needed a bit of a scare to kick them back into action.

Having a look at the new registration process that the AFL has made compulsory this year. I notice that all registered players now have an $11.70 fee payable to the AFL. I thought that this was the domain of Soccer and other sports where they take money from grass roots to prop up national teams and competitions. I thought the AFL would have enough cash in the bank without this levy. Does anyone have any more info on this? Has there previously been a levy?

Ease up with the arrogance. Young Dingley side kicked 10 goals against a pretty good side in a quarter and looked the winners at 3/4 time. Supporters are entitled to be happy. Finished the game with 16 fit players and had a heap cramping up in the final term. Well done to St Pauls. Wouldn't say getting ahead of themselves you w***er.

How is Dingley's recruiting going? Have lost a couple now
Dean Francis is a good get as we needed a tall target. Lost Marcus Freeman to Noble and Matt Freeman o/s but got an onballer from Frankston Bombers and a CHB from Bonbeach. Morgs is a massive loss and leaves us a little light on in the ruck but I would still expect us to be top 3-4 only because there doesn't seem to be a lot of action coming from the teams below last year apart from Chelt.

To be honest i was sh#$ting bricks at 3/4 time, Dingley definately will be top 4 this year and will challenge for the flag.

Collins, Nicholls, Graham and Rowlands......... Good luck with that St Pauls, thats one of the best SFL forward lines in a while. Collo's the shortest at about 6"3.

I'm not a Chelt supporter, but Collins, Nicholls and Rowlands were all key forwards (and good ones) in a Div 1 VAFA side, and are all still young, they were all alot better than Dean Francis at the same club for example. It will be a good yard stick for SFL defences (they are going to struggle...big time).........

Collo, whilst a drunk, is still one of the most talented local players in the state, and up there with James in terms of being able to turn it on. Hawthorn drafted him straight out of the Ammos for a reason....

Gilbert, McIntyre, Marasco & Hall should be more than suffice ;) and lets face it, the ball needs to be won in the midfield if there's any chance of it getting to the forward line.............

Chelt should be right up there this season with St Pauls, East Brighton & Dingley.

Bentleigh to be mid table pushing for 5th spot.

Everyone seems to be on the same page with the top 4 with Chelt the big improvers. 5th spot will be really interesting even though winning the title from there is next to impossible. The only way that could happen is if injuries nobbled the team during the year and all were available at the pointy end. My tip would be 5th would be StKilda City. Any team with Stinear, Arvo and Johnston is always going to be competitive. I cannot see Clayton getting there although they'll challenge. Bentleigh is a bit of an unknown but again games played against each other will probably decide it ultimately.

Nothing to see here folks....move on! Its only February, nothing is won now. :)

East Brighton, St Pauls still miles ahead of everyone.

On another note, great work by the SFL by getting involved with storify to link in with social media in the offseason. Both the EFL and VAFA do it, and its great promotion for the league!

Seen Cheltenham train tonight at the beach. Terrible numbers. Their CHB, Roscoe I think his name is was flying, running with their captain who has put on a few kg's

On a slightly different topic...

EVENT | On Sunday 1st June 2014, the Cheltenham Football Club will be hosting a Federal Football League Reunion at Jack Barker Oval when we play Bentleigh Football Club.
All former players, coaches, administrators and supporters from all former Federal clubs are invited to attend and help recount some of the stories and rivalries from one of the strongest local football competitions in the country.
Stay tuned to www.cheltenhamfc.com.au for more details in the coming weeks!
