There is no making $500k x4 in Bendigo. Who do you think is writing that cheque?
Get kangaroo falt and eaglemont to chip in 100k each. 200k from Bendigo. All the members that plan to attend the game spend the day before the match panning for gold at sovereign Hill. Should make up the difference...

4 times a year?

Won’t happen.

Would happen maybe once. Then basically never again per member family.

But a racetrack would be next level.

Someone told me about a large parcel of land out Williamstown/Altona way that used to be part of the oil refineries and the owners tried to donate it or sell it for $1 to the local council for sports and recreation use. The lead contamination in the soil was going to cost tens of millions to clean up so council declined the offer. shintemaster will probably know all about this as he's across issues in the area.

Tens of millions? Worth it. Even if it was 100m it would be worth it

I'd heard that story too, not sure if it was just contamination though. Other thing to remember is that parks are one of the biggest expenses for Councils - they're a pit of money, particularly for councils in Vic that aren't either already wealthy or have not been earmarked for serious growth. The rate capping introduced last decade has entrenched a lack of funding. Hobsons Bay is one of those most impacted (although not the only one). Even if the land was clean councils don't want big swathes of new parkland because they then have to maintain them and they can't afford to do so in many areas.

I'm from WA and although it would be nice to have more games here, it's so stupid.

We shouldn't even be going for regional Vic areas. It doesn't work, it hasn't worked for us, it hasn't worked for anyone else. What is the gain compared to trying to gain market share within Melbourne? Surely it would be marginal....

The only way to stop this cycle is to target ppl IN NORTH MELBOURNE. End of.

If we had ditched the Tassie crap and just invested in gaining more market share in the area we actually represent 10 years ago we wouldn't be having this convo anymore.

If things ever get tough just call up the members, we've donated over a million dollars within a week in the past. I'd rather that and keep some dignity than do this shite over and over again.

I wanna see the club survive so selling a couple of games to WA to cover the shortfalls is fine by me. I’d like the club and AFL to be strategic about it. Round 1, immediately post bye or last round of the year, where travel wont hurt too much

I mean both WC & Fremantle can travel 12 times a year so I reckon us travelling 6 instead of 5 (removing the 4x1 hour trips to Hobart) will be fine

I think there’s a shitload of wishful thinking & not much reality in this comment. “Market share” in Melbourne ?? There’s 9 clubs all vying for the very few non football fans who could be converted…and suburbs are way too fluid to think that I live in North Melbourne = I go for North Melbourne.

Additionally all bar the biggest Melbourne clubs sell games. That should tell you all you need to know about “market share” - Hawthorn sell 4, Dogs sell 2, Melbourne sell 1, St Kilda have sold multiple previously. Even Richmond sold games in 2010-2012 before a 3 flag era changed their fortunes.

You’re looking at Essendon & Collingwood who get the bulk of blockbuster clashes & Carlton who rely on their coterie groups to the detriment of the clubs success on field…

Also extremely incorrect to say selling games hasn’t worked for anyone.

Hawthorn have not just survived but thrived by selling games the correct way. Not just a money grab, but actually committing to an area long term.

North have failed because they just take the cash wherever. They never commit to actually make it an equal relationship.

We took the cash in Sydney, Canberra and Gold Coast. We committed to Tassie 100% and the relationship would have likely continued if not for the laughable decision to give them a licence. Main differences between us and the Hawthorn example though: Hawks got in first, and Hawks were a formidable team in that period.

I’m hearing Optus Stadium could be out of action for 2 weeks late July early August as WWE is coming back to town

wishful thinking of actually competing and not getting bullied out of the market? it's better than doing the same thing we've done since the late 90's that has repeatedly not worked.

like i said, if the club ever needs short term cash, the core members have helped. i'd rather that than taking deals, losing dignity and screwing the core members - and that's evident by the members support when they've needed it.

Hawthorn thrived because they won three flags in a row and 4 in the last 16 years.

the bottom line is we should be investing the time, resources and money in actually competing for marketshare and emerging fans within our area, not creative ways to sell out the club. worse case is the members pitch in.

True, if we ditched the Tassie crap 10 years ago, we wouldn't be having this convo because we'd still be millions in debt. And the split second that the Tasmanian expansion team became a viable option, we would have been liquidated.

Personally I don't think we need a secondary market. How much has the population expanded in Melbourne, and isn't it expected to grow by another 1.5m in the next 15 years?

Be worth watching, and bring the effort to those suburbs, and the club can get some of those new arrivals.

I'm around a lot of new arrivals both through work and the kids' school, the Tigers have absolutely cleaned up by being worth watching.

On a side note, the AFL are doing a pathetic job of marketing to new Melbournians, they are getting monstered by soccer and basketball at the primary school level.

The AFL is generally useless at everything it does. Too much hubris and too comfortable with its position.
