Should we be renamed the Fremantle - Walyalup Dockers?

The indigenous people I know well think the Walyalup name is silly.

I don't want it changed. The indigenous round is enough.
Maybe I am wrong and I stand corrected if I am. But maybe your friends are of thd younger age group.
I am sure the more senior elders would understand the name.

Posting this thread I had way too much faith in the internet / Freo Bigfooty. I still stand by it as a suitable route the club could take (but probably never will).

Apologies to the mods and any affected posters for any angst / issue caused.
The thread is fine, it's not your fault if people can't discuss it calmly but I stand by there being no genuine reason to change the name

Not the Elders i speak to. they never use the name. They know the name , but it not the name of thier mob so they dont want it to be used to cover all of them.

No. Using it once a year has been good a talking point. But that talking should go somewhere: Education, jobs, health etc. Properly reviving a place name that hasn't seen real usage in a long time is pretty low on the list. If anything, it may be time to rotate to another reminder. We've done this one.
Just keep focus on the real stuff and let the gimmicks stay as gimmicks.

As someone who generally greatly dislikes tokenistic bullshit so people can feel good about themselves, the temp name change was a brilliant move by Melbourne. Being forced to use Indigenous language is actually a fantastic way to embrace the culture and think a little but differently

Making it permanent becomes the worst version of tokenism that doesn't actually do anything and is not a fair representation of anyone

Whilst I don't ever want the name to change, I don't believe having a conversation is unhealthy and you meant no malice

I suggested this last season.

Even if for removing any reference to who Fremantle as a town was named after (look it up if you’re wondering why I and many feel Fremantle shouldn’t be called Fremantle)

We have places like Joondalup, Karinyup, Beeliar, Yangebup already that no one blinks an eye at but heaven forbid we change one of the anglicised names!

Not fussed really but just wanted to say that Walyalup is the best indigenous name in the AFL by a long long way.
That is a fair point.

I'm actually convinced St Kildas temporary name is a massive troll by someone. The saddest club in the league comes up with a name that's basically "Eura joke"....funniest shit I've heard since Woggaballiri.

Someone was really taking the piss with 'Woggaballiri'. Never laughed so hard when I heard that.

I think it would be interesting to hear the points of view from our indigenous supporters and see if there is any enthusiasm for us being known as Fremantle-Walyalup.

Tbh I am fairly unbothered by it either way, even though I’m a born and bred Freo person.

When Freo came about, East Freo and South Freo were pretty much the super clubs in WA. There was talk of turning them into a reserves team for WCEs and all sorts of other ideas were thrown out there. We attended a meeting at South Freo's club rooms as East Freo members, and there was a feeling of "we have to do something to stop more WA players leaving the state". That's my rusty memory. I disliked how West Coast was very ambiguous and Fremantle had a soul.

Whilst I love the rounds where we are Walyalup, I loved it when "It's wharfie time" came up on the scoreboard in the dying moments of the game.

Fremantle-Walyalup is too much of a mouthful. I suspect people would call us FWD (while mocking our lack of a FWD line). Just like GWS. Or WFD (which sounds like some abomination of WWF, WMD, WD-40) if you switched the order. Or simply Dockers. Nobody is going to waste time with a long winded team name when it can be abbreviated to something else.

Wanting the name Walyalup to be part of the official team name is a futile exercise unless you dropped Fremantle completely and permanently, and that would be a massive no from a huge majority of the supporter base.

If you want to do something, then I think the best place is to incorporate it into our jumper. Such as the bottom panel as seen on the 2024 indigenous jumper. Maybe change our jumper to an indigenous one for every round. Or at least more often (maybe alternate seasons or games for example). Perhaps the more simple 3 boomerang version from 2013 (our first indigenous jumper), and then still have a separate one for John Nicholls rounds with more elaborate artwork.
