Should we be renamed the Fremantle - Walyalup Dockers?

Woke academics are making up aboriginal names for everything, been going on for ages and only going to get worse.

They want everything changed to ‘an aboriginal name’, to bolster their claims. Hope google maps can keep up otherwise people are going to get lost🥴

We need to resist this woke agenda and stick to calling our club the name it was registered with and the majority of supporters have used since 1994.

There are a hell of a lot of indigenous named places before woke culture ever came to pass.
At a minimum, every place ending with up down south ie yallingup, joondalup. Places ending with wa in the Midwest such as morawa, mullewa.
Keep it simple. We are the Fremantle Dockers.
One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen is Ballarat written as Ballaarat. What is the extra ‘a’ for? Similarly Geelong as “Djilang”. The indigenous had no writing system so why the different orthography?

A lot of words have “ng”, eg Ngambri for Canberra, when the ‘g’ makes no modification to the previous ‘n’. It’s like the words are made deliberately exotic.

My two cents - changing the name for Sir Doug Nicholls Round is a good compromise between the two heritages. This is an important conversation to have (despite any unfortunate deviations it has taken), but imo any action on a permanent name change should be initiated and subsequently endorsed by a broad cross-section of the indigenous community.

No one but a Pom ever called a Freo wharfie a docker.

We really should have been called the Fremantle Shitfish. That would have sorted a few things out right from the off.

I come from Irish stock and know both sides of the colonial coin. The vestigial prejudice I have against the Poms for ****ing over “my people” allows me to do a little more than just sympathise with blackfellas. But this time around I am a beneficiary of imperial colonisation. I see the need to right wrongs but I also see why some folk bridle at the perceived overturning of their own past and history.

There were 400 years of wrongs to be righted when they effected peace in Norn Iron.

The Gaelic movement - reinvigorating an oppressed tongue and culture through concerted and initially quite “forced” imposition of what could have been lost - had many Irish detractors. Probably still does. But it has lasted and grown in strength. And few can deny its legitimacy and worth.

The deracination of blackfella culture happened more swiftly and completely. There’s more to be recovered and the forced nature of its revival can seem at odds with the daily experience of urban/contemporary blackfellas, generations away from speaking their languages, trapped in circles of poverty.

It may take “woke” anthropologists to recover some languages but that’s just a measure of how ****ed over the blackfellas were, not of how fake the recovery is.

Just by the bye, we have more placenames of indigenous origin than the eastern states because we had fewer white fellas. If you wanted to know where something was, you had to ask a blackfella.

We should do more of that.

Post needs more 'woke'. Such a divisive way of doing things and adds nothing.

Anyway, the question I would ask is if the Noongar current and former players had anything to do with the name and designs of Doug Nichols round?

If they did it is super weird to be stating a woke agenda as it's Noongar people seeing value in this. It's almost as if the club are just acknowledging the voices within the club. The players and their families would have cultural authority in the community as well and Elders would have been consulted.

If the Freo Indigenous players or if several local Elders were against it, it never would have happened.

Shame on you Bigger, for coming in here and shitting on all the frayed nerves with your stupid humanity. Don't you know what us so-called "Fremantle" supporters have been through to get this far?

Changing the name after my family and I have lived here our whole lives is an absolutely farcical suggestio... oh wait... nevermind.

Carn you purple bastards!!! Up the farrrkin Wallys!!! Frreeeeeeee---Oooooooohhh!!! Up the bloody Dockers!!! Freo-Walyalup forever!!!

It's a curious thing, a footy club, it brings together people who otherwise would not look twice at one another, in some cases would avoid eye contact all together and in the case of this club in particular, enacts collective punishment for crimes they did not commit, on a metronomic scale spanning decades.

We've lost people from this forum who died without seeing a maiden flag, we all say it "I just hope we'll live long enough to see the first one".

They changed the colours, we're still here.

They took the anchor, we're still here.

They edited the song, we're still here.

They moved out to the freeway, we're still here.

We've all got Stockholm Syndrome just as bad as the next person and I'm proud of all you woke snowflakes, you bigoted boomers, you fence sitting forum lurkers, because I know what you've been through...

...the best bit though is I know where we're goin', we're goin' to THE MOTHERFURRKIN PROMISED LAND, the first of the immortal 23 are already here and no matter what we're calling ourselves on the day the rest of Australia will rue that they ever let us twisted, sick in the head people near that shithole they call the MCG so late in the year!

YOKAAAAIIIIII!!!!!!⚓⚓⚓🟢🟣⚪🔴

I have little interest in this topic, but it's flipping hilarious that people use the term woke in a derogatory sense. Such a lame catch all for all things progressive they don't like.
It's the laziest possible way to argue a point. Broad-brush coverage with no defined battery limit.
As soon as a person says something is woke it automatically tells me that a person is not making a rational argument, but making a tribalistic statement of dislike for a particular cultural realm.
Here's a piece of advice for all of you that use that term - it may get you high fives and back slaps from other people of the same ilk, but everyone else tunes out to what you're trying to say immediately. It's a big red flag that you're just taking a political stance rather than actually debating a rational point of view.

It's like the classic saying, play the ball, not the man. Saying something is woke is going after the man (culture), not the ball (actual issue at hand).

Sounds like you have been triggered ?
😂😂
Awaiting for your reply which I may or may not read. 🥱

I'm not talking about the subject at all :).

Woke is like the opposite term to Boomers. I am outside of this Woke/Boomers universe, no engagement in that shit at all.

Definitely triggered by other family members who do engage in both sides of this crap.

So you are ranting about people being lazy and broad brush. And then say that you are lazy and broad brush.

It's literally called the Fremantle wharf.

Even 'wharfie' is tenuous. I have family who actually worked on there. they were always referred to as 'working on the wharf' or 'working at the ports.'
Yes the wharf is the where the ships tie upto . The port or harbour is the whole complex of wharves . The dockers tie the ships to the wharf

Not sure that’s true, almost every coastal town in NSW from Wollongong south has an indigenous name. South coastal region of WA lots of English, Dutch or French names.

I think we should just be called "Fremantle" end of story. I know we're officially the "Fremantle Football Club" but the Dockers, the Walyalup extension, the Wharfies re-consideration, no to all of them in an official capacity. Drop "Dockers" from the logo.

The logo actually is something that should be changed if anything, again. It's boring and not very good. I never liked the gray border around the shield. The anchor and D, how everything is proportionate to each other, sucks.

Maybe here, is where you can have your chance to try and incorporate some of the Walyalup spirit.

Having done prior Aboriginal Language classes, the "Ng" sound is difficult. Spoken, it doesnt sound like a normal English "N" at all.

Depends on the mob. Very different for different language groups.

It's a deliberate thing by the league to go the whole "Pies", Dockers", Saints route, they want more buy in than placenames like "Collingwood" give.

So if a broad section of the indigenous community (which is hard to achieve btw - bloody hard) asked for it, you would be for changing the name?
