So who was overlooked in the National Draft?

A ruckman is what Adelaide will target IMO. What chance of Baulderstone to Adelaide?
Jono Beech a mature ager from West Adelaide is training with us which indicates he's on the Adelaide radar, can't see us taking Baulderstone, not athletic enough and got pantsed by Angus Graham who we delisted in his last SANFL game.

The chap from the Bombers VFL side

???
Jono Beech is from West Adelaide formerly from the SA Riverland, Barmera-Monash I think.

In regards to rucks I'm hoping young Tom Read from Sturt is on our radar.

That Bombers bloke Tagliablue or whatever looks too un-athletic for mine, does SFA around the ground by all reports?

Yeah, Sam Tagliabue, that was stuff said by the AFL site, so it must be wrong?

IMO Baulderstone is not AFL quality. He does not jump nor is he exceptionally tall, wont make it against the better AFL rucks
Baulderstone is an interesting one; he fits the mould in some ways but breaks it in others. He is only average-to-good as a knock ruckman, but the prevailing wisdom is that merely totting up tap numbers is a meaningless statistic that doesn't win games. Also, he is not super-athletic, which is of course very much the trend at least among some draft-watchers (but for a guy who was 140kg not too long ago and has never been in a full-time system, it's hard to know where the ceiling is).

But where he does fit the zeitgeist is that he gets a lot of the ball around the park, and uses it really well. Not just well for a big man—he's an actual good decision-maker and a good user by foot. So he fits the 'extra midfielder' role popularised by Dean Cox.

Anyway, all these theoretical debates are kind of pointless. There's only one way to find out. Someone's been chatting with him, but it's no surprise that that someone isn't Adelaide.

But all good ruckman must first win in the actual ruck contests. September proves that time and again that it's important. It's why Ceglar was very very close to getting the nod over McEvoy for the grand final. Around the ground is the added bonus. At 200cm and without a leap it's hard to see Baulderstone beating the athletic jumping types like Nic Nat, Ryder etc or the 205+ new age big boys led by Sandilands. You can do it and Mumford's done it for years as has Jamar and several others and it comes from being a fearless strong brute. I hope he gets picked up, he'll be great for a teams reserves and you never know until he's tried out what he can produce, plus it's a great story.

WOW!!

What a draft that turned out to be

Not sure what was more interesting, the fact that highly fancied guys like Sam Baulderstone and Sam Tagliabue were overlooked or the drafting of less rated Keegan Brooksby. Or perhaps the drafting of VFL guys Kane Lambert and Tyrone Downie on the back of "ok" seasons whilst underage stars like Tyler Keitel and Ryan Lim went untouched.

Maybe even the second chance lifelines could give those two a running? Shaun MCkernan to the Bombers, Cam Delaney to the Cats, Jordan Kelly to the Bulldogs?

pwoah, what the hell is happening?

(PS: I know Gil has done a hell of a lot of things right in his short time at the top. Can he do one more thing and get rid of the farce that is the Pre Season Draft? What a pathetic joke that has become)

A lot of big boys on the Geelong list now... O_O

Mark Blicavs - 198cm
Mitch Clark - 200cm
Cameron Delaney - 194cm
Tom Hawkins - 197cm
Tom Lonergan - 197cm
Jake Kolodjashnij - 194cm
Padraig Lucey - 203cm
Hamish McIntosh - 203cm
Tom Read - 200cm
Dawson Simpson - 206cm
Rhys Stanley - 200cm
Harry Taylor - 193cm
James Toohey - 198cm
Nathan Vardy - 198cm
Josh Walker - 196cm
and more

Mostly ruck/fwds along with some key backs... there are a fair amount of big blokes on the Cats list. Very well stocked.

Well stocked? I think heavily stocked is probably more accurate. Hawkins and Taylor are the real deal. But after that it's:

Injury prone: Clark, Vardy, Simpson, McIntosh, Delaney
Question marks/young players: Blicavs, Walker, Toohey, Stanley, Read, Lucey, J Kolo
And Lonergan, who could go on for a few years (ask the Bulldogs!) or could decline at any moment really

I think it's smart to load up with talls whilst rebuilding the midfield depth over the next couple of years. But it's not like they have an AA spine and good reserves, they have a mixed bag that 2015/2016 will probably sort out a lot.

What happened to Mitch Brown who is a former first round pick?

Overlooked for Hamling who might replace Austin as a role player and a KPP, yet was cut after three seasons. Wells' touch must be wearing off with Robinson, Garlett, Lucas and Blease finding a new home.

Stanley is no world beater.

Did you miss the entire point of the post or what? lol.

Yes - we have quite a few talls with queries. McIntosh only has one more year in him, Simpson the same if he fails his comeback from his fourth round of back surgery. Hopefully Vardy gets a decent run now - his hip complaints appear to be behind him - coming back from a knee reco probably means to expect limited impact next season from him.

I can see Walker being traded at the end of next year if he fails to get regular senior game time. Many of us were a bit non-plussed about getting Stanley - but on further examination he may actually be needed to be our leading ruckman during the year if Simpson and McIntosh are struggling.

Baulderstone had a great year but in the end he was absolutely smacked 3 times by 2 borderline AFL rucks in Angus Graham & Brent Renouf (both now delisted). If you are struggling against those 2 then you are no chance against guys like Jacobs, Lobbe, Sandi etc

Yep I had heard that. He's young enough to still improve and I doubt ruck coaching at most state leagues is anything like what it is at the best AFL clubs, so he's a great story so it's not like his dream is over just yet. He might need to find a way to get himself some specialist ruck coaching to be able to beat the best SANFL guys (who will likely be the AFL back ups).

Brooksby is a lot better than Baulderstone. Has beaten him a couple of times. Does just as much around the ground if not more and is better up forward as well. Much better overhead mark and reader of the play. If Baulderstone can't win using his strength then he's got nothing for plan B. He's strong but for me he's only a moderate state league ruck. Not even a top quality one.
