So who won trade week!?

We did pretty well given we addressed key deficiencies of our best 22.

IN
Redden + Jetta + Pick 23 + Giles

OUT Pick 17 + Pick 36 + Pick 37 (Selwood Compo) + Sinclair

So it's basically Redden and Jetta for Picks 36 + 37 and a six pick downgrade of our first.

I spent most of trade period laughing uncontrollably at the blues, but at this point I have to say that I'm well and truly impressed.

RFC lost the trade period by a mile.

Gave up 2 second rounders for 12 months of a guy they could have for free in 2016.

Utter madness and expecting a membership drop next year

Clear winners:

Essendon: Got rid of Carlisle and Melksham. Got picks 5 and 25.
Fremantle: Got Bennell cheap. Missed overpaying for McCarthy.

Winners:
Tigers - Blues folded on Yarran and Townsend was cheap. Missed Treloar.
Roos - Got Anderson and lost Bastinac. Missed Aish but did as well as they probably could have.
Geelong - Got all their targets at a fair price (Danger, Smith, Selwood and Henderson)
Adelaide - Got a reasonable return for Danger and picked up some handy players (Seedsman, Menzel). Lost Kerridge as part of the Menzel deal.
Collingwood - Got Howe, Aish and Treloar but lost Seedsman, Kennedy and a lot of picks.

Time will tell:
Hawthorn - Lost Anderson, got pick 15. Lots of minor peripheral movement.
Bulldogs - Didn't do much. Probably needed a backup ruckman but couldn't get Lobbe across the line.
West Coast - Lost Selwood, Gained Redden. Lost Sinclair and got Jetta.
Blues - traded half their team away and picked up the GWS reserves in return (albeit at a bargain price)
Port - Got Dixon after a lot of haggling for an okay price.
Lions - Got Bastinac and Bell, Lost Aish. Got bugger all for Leuenberger.

Losers:
Demons - Lost Howe and Toumpas. Gained Melksham and Kennedy. Some reasonable draft pick swaps.
Saints - Got a scandal plagued Carlisle and lost Pick 5. Did pick up Freeman at an okay price.
Gold Coast- Gave away Bennell and folded on most other deals. Did get a reasonable price for Dixon.

Clears losers:
Swans: Lost Bird for peanuts. Some strange pick trading mainly for academy picks. Picked up Talia late for nothing.
GWS: Probably could have gotten more if they unpackaged their players to the Blues. Treloar deal was reasonable.

I think West Coast was solid without being spectacular:

Positives
- Redden and Jetta fill needs and come into our best 22. They suit us perfectly so hopefully they can deliver.

Negatives
- lost midfield depth
- lost Sinclair (partially offset by getting Giles)
- no pick before 31.

7/10

Wrong

Without trading for Menzel, you have an extra list spot meaning you need to make an extra draft selection.

We've had 6 players out and 4 in, so there are currently 2 spots free on the list. You have to make 3 draft selections, including rookie upgrades. That's 9, 13 and upgrade Kelly, with (for the sake of argument) Wright delisted to free up the 3rd spot.

Without Menzel it's still 9, 13 and Kelly, without the need to delist Wright.

However, if you didn't trade for Menzel, you would have used pick 28 in the draft. Kerridge was going anyway.

That's your fatal flaw in your argument, pick 28 would have been used had you not traded for Menzel. And if even if it wasn't going to be used, you would have tried package it to move slightly up the draft. 28 is the difference between 9 and 4 according to the points system. Chuck Kerridge in and 9 becomes 3 under the points system.

Menzel isn't a free hit. Pick 28 had value and so did Kerridge. You gave up likely somewhere between pick 14 and 20 in value to get Menzel.
"Under the points system" 14 clubs don't give a crap about the points. I'd take a pick in the teens over the entire third round.

Carlton get an F.

Henderson left, and then they blinked first in the Yarran trade and bent over.
Got four VFL players from GWS who are not much chop.

Yeah sure they have four draft picks in the top 20, but Carlton do as well with draft picks as what a whale would do with a bicycle.

Disastrous couple of week for Carlton.

Lol, what?

Eagles clearly had an awesome trade period. By the time academy players are taken we'll be back with a top 20 pick. Both Redden and Jetta improve our best 22 and it cost us two players outside of our 2016 best 22 with minimal draft position change.

How are Freo clear winners? They brought in a player on his last chance and failed to address the needs of a key forward and a key back after losing McPharlin and most likely Pavlich.

Well it looks like a lot of teams actually were pretty happy with the points system. A lot of the trades were more complex this year and relied on assessing value of complex draft pick transactions.

I would beg to differ and suggest it opened up the market place for reliable value transactions and hence, we saw more trades. Its a good move IMO and I think the clubs are definitely on board. I don't think your views are representative of the views of the majority of clubs.

Is your view shaped by the fact the value you received for Jed Anderson was only about pick 41? That is the perfect example where clubs make it look like they made out like bandits for players, when really in return they got peanuts. There is actually one flaw in the system and that is the early picks (i.e. less than 25) are over valued in comparison to most of the draft picks under the points system.

crows have lost danger and have not even nearly replaced him = big time losers
We were never going to repalce him. Given the hand we were dealt, it was a very good trade period. We have added depth, balanced our list and hopefully have some younger, hungry footballers who will give it all for our club. How Port go now they are so top heavy will be interesting. Anything could happen for either club next year.

Geelong did very well, Dangerfield was the best player available.
Pies nailed it as well.
Freo landing Bennell was also great.

Other clubs as well were pretty successful, GWS with a bunch of 2016 picks (I think), Bombers must be laughing after what happened last night

Carlton also picked up an extra top 10 pick, pick 11 and pick 19 on top of the young guys that they took a gamble on.
To do that they gave away 1 first round pick from next year (8), 2 x 2nd round picks this year (11) and a player that didn't want to be at the club.
Having 4 picks in the top 19 is a good effort in any trade period, especially when we gave away sfa to get those extra picks.
