Solution to everyone complaining about ANZAC DAY!!!

why not just play all 8 games on anzac day.... that's the only way to be fair isn't it..... there's enough stadiums to go around.. then let the crowd decide which game they wanna go to then.. zzzzzzzzz......stop whinging..

Every year there are multiple threads about essendon and collingwood having a hold on Anzac Day and that they should share it around... the base of it is that, if they were to take it off the two greatest victorian clubs, there would be a massive uproar from the entire fanbase of essendon and collingwood... which would almost be as big as the rest of victoria.

a solution to the epidemic crisis that people want to see other teams play on this magnificant public holiday is this. PLAY FOOTY ON GOOD FRIDAY... and the two teams that play are last years grand finalists. easter is usually a few rounds into the season anyway not like this years first round. This day could and would turn into one of the biggest days on the football calender. of course it would be played at the MCG no matter what two teams are playings

THOUGHTS?

Great idea Mark Johnson. "Good Friday" Idea below...

Here it is.

The "GOOD" Game. Celebrating a GREAT rivalry in football.
Hawthorn V North Melbourne.
Celebrating the great clubs and great players like Kerry 'Good' and.
Comemorating the "Good" games of the past (1970's), 'good' grand finals.
'Good' Idea, 'Good' Friday, Hawthorn V Nth Melbourne.

Well at least I am trying!

"GOOD" luck!

The problem with Anzac day now is that it has become too big. The AFL has created a monster.

Its like Collingwood and Essendon get to play in their own GF every year. The financial and promotional windfall from this game is massive.

It puts all other Victorian teams at a huge disadvantage.

The game may have saved your club Speedy! This game is subsidising North Melbourne existence, directly and indirectly

people should get over it
as is my understanding as to why its only essendon and collingwood because during the war their were players from these 2 teams playing football as a relaxation method
i cant remember if thats correct or if the soldiers were wearing collingwood and essendon uniforms while they were playing.

its one of those 2 reasons as to why its only collingwood and essendon, and thats the reason why it will only be collingwood and essendon
are you serious

Get rid of the rigged draw and allow another game outside of Vic and nobody will complain (much)

We're getting closer to a solution but the rigged draw seems not only to be the biggest issue but also the least likely to change.

If Essendon & Collingwood can draw a crowd regardless of date and ladder positions (as we're told), then there's a good argument to suggest the game should be played on another date. However I think most people can accept that the day has become unique and any change is either going to be unfair to other teams or we risk a half filled MCG on Anzac Day.

I can live with the annual matchup but a rigged draw undermines the integrity of the game.

Rigged draws along with cap & draft concessions have made this competition farcical.

here here:thumbsu:

What happens with rigged draws like ANZAC day is that Essendon and Collingwood get massive exposure and grow even bigger. The smaller clubs have no chance at all to grow their membership with no expsure and being left out of blockbusters.

I don't get what the anger is for.

The money ends up being distributed to the other clubs through the competitive balance fund.

You don't get it do you. Its not just a money thing, its exposure, membership building etc. Kids sit at home watching the game live and seeing a big crowd and becoming yet another fan.

Do what the SANFL does, rematch of the previous years Grand Finalists. It works perfectly.

Anzac Medal being awarded exclusively is a joke.

Before Essendon and Collingwood embraced and marketed the day it was just another public holiday. Another day of football that struggled to bring a crowd. Another game which needed promotion.

Essendon and Collingwood ran with it with Eddie and Sheeds getting together to make a monster. And they did.

Now you pay about $350 for two tickets to this match on Ebay. Yes, it's THAT sold out. No other teams could do that. I don't care what you're talking about re 'Grand Final replays' it just wouldn't happen. You replay a West Coast vs Sydney and you'd get half a stadium, half the viewers and half the interest.

If you wanna trash Essendon and Collingwood having the day that's fine but you need to offer up another solution. And for those who think it's exclusive it's not. This year there are two matches being played on Anzac Day.... one will have considerably more viewing audience than the other.

It's like Big Brother. Everyone hates it, no one watched it, but it's always in the top10 ratings. You have a whinge about Anzac Day Essendon vs Collingwood yet watch it anyway. Many supporters on here, especially West Coast, have talked about how they're coming over for the game and how big it is. Let's see Melbourne vs Doggies do that.

I've never agreed with so many Bomber fans. :thumbsu: By the way..

There were matches played on Anzac Day before 1995, but they were not as
successful as the 1995 match in attracting a crowd or providing an Anzac ceremony. In
1994 the Anzac Day match was a contest between St Kilda and Richmond, at the old
Waverley Park ground, played in front of only 37,370 spectators. On Anzac Day 1992,
Melbourne led Essendon by 47 points a few minutes into the last quarter, but lost by a
point, yet no Anzac meaning was read into this famous Essendon comeback. Essendon
and Collingwood had always drawn large crowds, but right from the start their Anzac
Day match attracted massive crowds of more than 80,000, and became invested with
Anzac references.
It was Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy who conceived of the idea of a fixed Anzac
Day match between his club and Collingwood. (His grandfather and uncle had both
served in the military.) He made contact with Graeme Allan, the Collingwood manager,
who supported the idea. The rivalry between these teams had been exacerbated by the
1990 Grand Final and other matches in that period. The RSL was consulted and lent the
idea its support. The then RSL President, Bruce Ruxton, is a passionate Collingwood
supporter. To other clubs who were concerned that these two Victorian teams were
cornering the match for themselves, Sheedy gave a typically impish reply:
It’s a difficult one, but I think sometimes you need the reward for the ideas. The
AFL’s seen it that way and I think the RSL are very happy with Collingwood
and Essendon… I think sometimes you’ve got to get a reward for your own
creativeness. I don’t see any problem in being rewarded for working on ideas to
create a fantastic opportunity to thank first of all the RSL and the government
that’s backed it up because an enormous amount of work’s been done to get this
match up just for this year for a start… In the end the two clubs got together to
sit down with the RSL and the AFL to make it a yearly event and then work at it
and build it up to what it is now. Somewhere along the way you’d hope that
you’re going to keep it and have it and be rewarded for that idea because
otherwise it wouldn’t be here.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Meh... neither of us need it. We're so rich it's unbelievable.

It puts all other Victorian teams at a huge disadvantage.
Essendon and Collingwood created it to be what it is today.... they enjoy the spoils. When your team is privileged to have Sheeds at the helm you might enjoy similar marketing joys.

Why so, there are many exclusive medals given out over the course of an AFL season.

The Showdown Medal, for one.
are you gonna compare the showdown medal to the anzac medal?

someone like McGough getting awarded for bravery and put on a pedestal is a farce, and then to even relate that to guys getting shot in trenches is downright disgusting in my eyes.

Great post !

Great post !

Cheers

The Anzac Day clash is thus a meeting of the two halves of Australian society
divided by the conscription controversy of 1916–1917. Both teams carry black, the
symbol of death, and Essendon also carries the red of Flanders field. Collingwood carries
the clear dichotomy set up in total war.

Essendon in 1922 moved from the East
Melbourne Cricket Ground to Windy Hill, not far from Melbourne’s then main airport,
and adopted the new nickname, ‘the Bombers’. Collingwood borrowed the tune of a
Boer War marching song, Goodbye Dolly Gray, for its club anthem:

I thought the 2 teams first in line to play on Good Friday were Carlton and Richmond?

Anyone else hear anything about this?

Aren't both clubs trying to push it?

In case anyone was worried about Good Friday falling on the same day as Anzac Day, I'm pretty sure it can't happen.

In 2011, Good Friday will be on April 22nd, with Anzac Day the following Monday. That's the closest it gets until 2038 when Anzac Day is on Easter Sunday.

Yeah, can't happen.

The latest Good Friday can be is April 23th, which would make Easter Sunday fall on ANZAC Day.

I feel sorry for that poor club "unlisted", they are really struggling to survive.

Edit: Just checked your posting history, pretty sad that you are ashamed to admit you're a Bulldogs supporter.

Not ashamed of anything, love all the smaller clubs, Bulldogs, North, Saints, Freo.

I feel sorry for you actually, looking up my posting history, never knew you cared:p
