Staker asks for guaranteed midfield time

Staker's actually played well in other games but because he played defensive roles (and stopped his opponent) he didn't get 25+ posessions therefore supporters deem him as having a crap game.

Supporters who say that he's played 2 or 3 good games out of a 100 really have no idea.
Very true.

IIRC in Rnd 1 2007, he only had 14 touches. But he kept a dual Brownlow Medallist (Goodes) to just 8 touches. It was nothing short of a sublime effort and went a long way towards our unlikely victory.

Well I read all the post's for a change and am pleased to report most of you are living in Dreamland.

Staker is NOT a midfielder, and should NOT play there in 09.

We have NOW LOOK at the moment,
Kerr
Masten
Ebert
McNamara
Davis
Stenglein
Fletcher
Butler
Embley
Houlihan
Priddis
Rosa
S.Selwood
A.Selwood
Schofield
Hurn

So how the Hell is STAKER going to fit in a midfield when all these guys are fighting for a spot?

The way he fits in... and listen close. IS BY BEING SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER THAN ALL OF THE HIGHLIGHTED PLAYERS ON THAT STUPID LIST. AND the only reason I did not highlight Davis, Masten and Ebert is because their kids and I want to give them a fair go and not state that Staker now is better in the midfield than Davis, Masten, Ebert now.

Kerr
Masten
Ebert
McNamara maybe but mcnamara played a few good games this year
Davis
Stenglein -bad year last year if no improvement in preseason then yes
Fletcher- yes
Butler -no
Embley -no
Houlihan-no
Priddis-no
Rosa-no
S.Selwood- yes atm but is a first year player
A.Selwood
Schofield -defender
Hurn - no

plus if we draft more mids this year eg rich swift or hill he is no hope

Of course not. Flexibility is everything in modern AFL.

But Staker and his manager feel they can extend his career and earning capacity by asking/demanding to be able to spend more time in the middle, as that is where he seems to produce his best footy.

A contract is a negotiation. It'd be like one of my staff coming to me and saying "I need to re-negotiate, I need to be able to have Wed's off, but in return, I'll work more on Thursday". It's give and take.

The 'take' by Staker here is he wants a better shot at spending time where he feels he is most productive, and thus, has a better shot at earning more. The 'give' is that if he is then given that chance, he has to back it up on the park and produce the results, or the club drops him/trades/delists him and that earning capacity is removed.
15 pages in (well 16 now) and we finally get the post that sums it up :thumbsu:

+1 to 'what he said'.

May I also add that is fair to say he has improved with each year he has been on our list (while some are going backwards, young and old) and in each year he has seemed to develop another apsect to his game. Yes, this can make him a jack of all trades, master of none, but I believe he will continue to improve in all the aspects he already has to his game now. Add confidence and experience to that mix, and you've got yourself a very handy player, at worst.

I will agree with anyone that this year is pretty much put up or shut up for Stakes though, but I like that he's got the balls to tell the coaches 'hey, I feel like I'm getting somewhere, give me a crack at what I think I can do best and I won't let you down'. It at the very least indicates that he's prepared to give it his all.

I reckon the talk of 'Staker making demands, ra ra ra...' is a beat up.

We obviously differ on opinion, but if you are willing to give stenglein and McNamara the chance to prove themselves in the middle next year why not staker especially since he has been great and hard working when we gave him the opportunity end of this year? If you really think he doesnt deserve the chance download rounds 14-18 and really watch the guy play middle. You have allready basically agreed to 3 blokes who stakes can take over from and two of them are in the starting 22.

p.s accidently highlighted scooter, dont think he is better atm but obviously first year so deserves a chance.

someday gunnar....someday...

his game on the weekend didnt really fill me with confidence that he has turned the corner. we'll see how he goes this week. hopefully he does actually play in the midfield against port.

I agree anti, I dont think he actually spent much time there saw him once in the centre 4th quarter though. AFL.com says he kicked 13 goals from his 1 game in 09 so he couldnt of gone that badly, McKinley is a star kicked 42 and he didnt even play!

How many games do you reckon Staker needs to play before he gets judged on actual performances rather than potential?

You would actually have to start wondering if the potential is even there?

5 years, produced nothing other than the odd fleeting quarter in a game now and again.

Not a midfielder, never going to be a midfielder.

Ablett, Judd, Cousins, kerr, Cooney etc etc are midfielders, other than Goodes at Sydney who is the exception I have never seen a good midfielder who is 196cm tall.

Anyone who thinks Staker and or even Lynch are going to be gun midfielders are dreaming.

Gold coast beckons! ;)

I was thinking that myself, the first guys to trade to Gold Coast, Staker and Hansen offers gold coast two mature age big bodies to play in there team.

Would also add Wilkes to to give to gold coast.

Also I dont think he should play foward would rather see him on a wing playing the old mainy role as a seventh defender running foward.

Either way needs to play better or be dropped.

The introduction of the Gold Coast team is a perfect opportunity to finally cut Staker loose - he has the added incentive of being able to take his girlfriend home (who from all reports is also an overpromiser and underdeliverer!) Whoever put that post up impliedly claiming that Staker's job on Goodes during a home and away game won us the game against Sydney has clearly forgotten the game that was just a little bit more important game (ie the Grand Final!) in which Goodes tore him a new one and his pathetic efforts in the last quarter could easily be claimed to be one of the significant contributing reasons why we lost!

I still think Jaxon Crabb could be our next gun midfielder. People have written him off to quickly, imagine how great our midfield will look, Crabb, Staker, Tiny Pinder.

I'm glad ur not on management. It's so easy to say trade this trade that but WCE have always treated their players as people and not as commodities. Those players have lifes here and unless they WANT to go then the Eagles will continue to treat them as people.
