I wonder how many West Coast supporters feel rather embarrased now that some of them gave Ben Cousins a standing ovation when he returned to football against Sydney.

I have recently joined the BigFooty forum and I see many supporters calling for his head and that he should immediately be sacked or delisted - West Coast supporters included.

It is a shame what he is going through with an addiction (if all reports are believed to be true) but save the standing ovations for other AFL players or people that you should admire.

But then again as the saying goes "hindsight is a wonderful thing"!

Nope, he doesn't deserve any admiration at all.. Would I give him a standing ovation again? Yes definitely. He's THE eagles club champion. Why wouldn't you cheer him on in his return from addiction (a disease).

you left one out there..

you left one out there..
left more than one out
if your looking at career highlights then you can also add

- Refusing to talk to police about alleged incident at a night club and his involvement with a bikie gang (with Gardiner)
- Running away from a breatho leaving your missus to take the heat
- being arrested for possession of a prohibited substance
- refusing police to take a blood test

yeah role model for kids that one

Port only has one thing to answer for.

- Losing by 119 in a Grand final. The worst loss in over 100 AFL/VFL Grand finals. :thumbsu:

Yes I understand that at first he came back from the addiction and the rehab clinic in America and a lot of people refer to drug addiction as a 'disease'. If this is the case, is also alcohol and nicotine (cigarettes) addiction also classified as a disease?

The point I am trying to make is there are more worthy people out there who are more deserving of a standing ovation, two names come to mind for me from the AFL fraternity - Adam Ramanaskas (Essendon) and Jason McCartney (Kangaroos), what they have both overcome compared to Ben Cousins is simply amazing in my view.

You can give Ben Cousins another standing ovation if you wish, but I doubt you will get an opportunity to in the future as he will surely be sacked or delisted by the club. Unfortunate? Yeah... but that's what drugs will end up doing to you.

And in regards to all his accolades and accomplishments, it takes years to gain peoples trust, respect and admiration and also years to have the kind of CV that Ben Cousins has produced. But it can take only a matter of weeks or months for all that to be forgotten.

What I have referred to in the above paragraph also applies to trust - it can take years to gain the trust of an individual or team, yet can take only seconds (given the certain event) for that trust to disappear. Could the WCE admin and team trust Ben Cousins again? I doubt it.

Will many supporters of AFL Football remember Ben Cousins for his on-field performances and awards? or the fact he was addicted to drugs and this is the way his career finished?
