Do Rey, Ben and the other key fighters in the movie have specific fighting disciplines? Like in MMA some are grapplers, jujitsu etc.

Yes but I don't know how much of it is considered cannon nowadays though

Liked it. Felt like it had to try and fix some of the stupid shit from the last film and did a pretty good job. Over analysis of movies, especially Star Wars means you cannot please everyone I guess as is easy to nitpick everything. I just run with the eyeball and enjoyment test, and this one did not jar me out of just enjoying it like the last one.
The one part of the movie I did step out was '' they fly now'' triple echo. It was unnecessary to be repeated. (and this is off the cuff memory) When the Daleks went up the stairs the 1st time it was a real shock because they forecast the safety of going up stairs '' run up the stairs and we will be safe'' and then suddenly Daleks up the stairs.

Instead in Rise the gravity of their situation was treated in a comic book style

Does Star Wars lore have set power levels for certain people? ie, is it written somewhere Rey cannot be that powerful? Or given it is a movie and made up she can be as powerful as they want her to be? I have no issue her being a Palpatine. Actually better than her being a Skywalker I reckon. I just wonder if people make up themselves how powerful THEY want characters to be. Like Yoda HAS to be stronger than Rey, because 'reasons/or actual lore'? Genuine question.

It's more the speed with which she gains, learns and controls her power.

If it was untamed bursts of force energy that's one thing, but dragging back a ship, having a mastery of force persuasion etc that's the issue a lot have.

I get everything is slightly implausible but Yoda was 900 years old and trained and studied for a long time. Even Luke took a long time in comparison to Rey. To make the idea of Jedi powers plausible and valuable I reckon they have to be earned and strove for. The young’uns get trained from a young age. But I still loved the movie. Would’ve loved to see Annikin but...

Which is why I thought the shot of the kid at the end of the previous movie getting the broom to travel to him was a good understanding of this time required.

I dont recall seeing Rey (and I have a bad memory ) utilise this inner force she is supposed to have in her scavenging. A throwaway line '' I always seem to get the best price'' or '' I know where the best stuff is'' would have hinted at this early power

also its been established in the saga that grandmaster yoda could pull a ship out of the water with great expense of force energy, and small amount of rocks with great energy. and various other jedi and sith, masters in their craft, in the movies, shown that the force mainly amplifies their natural human abilities...like big jumps, speed bursts, aerial sommersaults, and such. Never too crazy affecting great mass. Vader and Sidious and Dooku force oushing people around, chocking others telekinetically, able to see things before they happen, that kind of thing.

we see kylo (with 13 years of training with grnadmaster luke + x time with snoke) show a few good ones like freezing a blaster bolt in mid air, but nothing too extreme still.

then rey comes along and does things effortlessly and without training, without time spent mastering things, no struggles. she learns to mind power day 1 of her awakening in TFA. but come TLJ suddenly RJ ****s everything up by making her do ridiculous things. again, only ONE week has passed between the start of TFA and the end of TLJ. she lifts ten tons of boulders without breaking a sweat. Also Leias Mary Poppins doesnt help.

then JJ exasperates the issue with what we see in TROS. Not just Rey but Kylo, Luke and Sidious. Ridiculous things.

what started with the force giving a good slight edge to a person, reflexes, speed, precognition, but only moving smallish mass most of the time....has become literally Marvel super-powers.

SW shouldnt be treated kike Marvel, keep them separate ffs.

Overall, I liked it. The few things I'd have changed:

- I'd have killed Chewie in the ship struggled*. Would have given the movie a lot more emotional weight and the more emotional Rey gets the closer she is to the darkside. Gives her reasons to not talk to Poe or to Finn and more of a reason to try to exile herself on the island.
- Change a bit of the dialogue with Luke to have more Rey scared of how close she is to the darkside.
- Would have let C-3PO have his mind wiped. A selfless move for his character
- Not have the kiss because...
- Rey dies killing Palps and doesn't get healed because Ben isn't darkside anymore establishing healing as a darkside power. Cause Rey was pissed during that fight and would rightfully "kill" Kylo Ren when he is distracted to then "heal" Ben.
- Have Ben bury the sabers and claim the Skywalker name and build his own/take Rey's yellow one

*Though from memory I can't remember if Rey feels Chewie before they get on the Star Destroyer or not but give them another reason to get on board

Everything else I would wanna see be done differently would boil down to having a different episode 8. Because coming out of this movie, I hated episode 8 even more as it highlighted the things I didn't like about 8.

Rey being a Palp doesn't bother me at all in the slightest and helps establish her rapid growth in the force but I would have liked it to also have been her downfall either into the darkside which would have been a nice episode 8 heel turn of some sorts or ultimately her death. Like a candle burning too bright or like Carl Carlson in Eurkea Episode 5.

The way she moves the boulders at the end of TLJ is the only force using time I have big issues with. It should have been a lot harder and perhaps at a slower rate. Otherwise I think the rest can be explained by the force connection from the saber and the ROS stuff has the additional year training from Leia.

Do you agree that's it's the worst SW film ever?
I havent done my tier ranking yet, so lets see as i do it now....

TIER ONE
ANH, TESB

TIER TWO
ROTS, R1, TPM

TIER THREE
AOTC, TheMandalorian

TIER FOUR
TFA, TROS, TLJ

The problem with making force powers so overpowered is that the next movie etc with force users will have to go even bigger and more powerful.

Slippery slope.
exactly. the directors are more into raising bars, creating cool cgi effects and action sequences, than they are about continuity and lore.

the insinuation in TESB is that 900 year old mega powerful Yoda at his best could lift a weighty x-wing and another rock at the same time.

Don’t have to. They have outs in this film such as the commentary around powers being absent for generations. Just as you watch the prequels and think that the OT characters are not really that powerful.

Agreed, doesn’t and shouldn’t make one over powered. However, Anakin displayed the power prior to his training, with pod racing. Until she touched the saber she displays nothing. In the EU objects can be force sensitive or have a force sensitivity. I always thought that awoken her. Considering the force dyad, it certainly stands to reason that an event caused the elevated power and that as with the finale, the Jedi empowered her.

Just my take, and I had it since TFA.

But Anakin actually practiced pod racing.

You didn't have an issue with her using the force on the storm trooper in TFA?

Just saw it.

I'm not going to over analyse and critique it, essentially Star Wars are kids movies and my kids were completely captivated by the Prequel Trilogy (and the OT) as I was the OT when I was a kid.

My thoughts. I think they done a brilliant job of tying the whole series up. I really enjoyed it. I like the fact that over the whole series each Skywalker was responsible in the end for bringing balance to the force from their original creator Palpatine. Anakin Skywalker willingly died saving Luke Skywalker, Luke Skywalker willingly died saving Leia Skywalker, Leia Skywalker willlingly died saving Ben Skywalker and Ben Skywalker willingly died thus completing the cycle saving Rey as Rey had bought balance to the force only with the help of the Skywalkers and every Jedi for thousands of generations, it was the will of the force that Rey had to be revived by ending the Skywalker lineage. The Skywalkers had fulfilled their prophecy. Rey couldn't have defeated Palpatine alone. That was impossible.

9/10 A great way to complete a story I've been invested in all my life.
