what does cannon mean? ive seen it mentioned in this thread and assumed it was one of those big guns on the destroyer ships
Cannon is what is considered to be the "true" story usually made by the creators of said story. So for example, Episode 4 is the actual story, someone's fanfiction of what happened between 4 and 5 isn't. Originally, the cannon of Star Wars was the 6 movies, Clone Wars cartoon, thousands of other books, comics and video games endorsed by Lucas and LucasArts.

When Disney bought Star Wars they said "everything other than the movies and the cartoon shows are no longer cannon. They didn't happen. What we say now happens".

So the fighting styles I linked to you were cannon and legitimate before Disney but I am not sure if they are now.

I have just seen it, I managed to avoid spoilers but catching up on this thread now.

I loved the movie, overall I thought the whole trilogy was good and much better than the second. Obviously there were some inconsistencies but I try to overlook those unless it really impacts the story
Can't wait to see it again.

I watched it for a second time last night and I like it even more.

Went with my brother in law (who's a Star Trek fan) he complained about the same issues as the critics did haha just shows that this was made for SW fans.

A lot of SW fans really don't like it.

It's made for a subset of SW fans just as TLJ was. It's just generally a different subset.

86% audience score on rotten tomatoes.

Tells me quite a few fans enjoyed this film . It's the hard core SW fans like Jeremy from Geeks and Gamers where most of the angst is coming from imo.

Saw it, loved it. Hate TLJ even more now. (Spoilers galore - we're safe now yeah?)

Some random thoughts. Is KK gone, or was she never the issue?

They all survived - can anyone smell sequel?

Rey Palpatine - I called it day 1 after TFA (or Kenobi/Skywalker). Bloodline just makes more sense than ANYTHING else. Even fits with the "Parents are nothing" speech from Kylo. Still would have liked the ending to be her sacrificing herself with Ben to kill Palpatine. I note we haven't seen ANY use of force powers since - perhaps the force (now in balance) has been drained from her from this fight/saving Ben and she will be merely 'sensitive' - rather than GOD.

Rey powers vs (anyone else - even Yoda). Yoda was a frail old man - equivalent to a 90yo human who (perhaps like Luke in ST) had shut himself off from the force. Obi-Wan was similarly an old-man. Even the Emperor - by far the most powerful of all force-users was not just old, but ancient (literally) and regenerated from a virtual corpse form the essence of Rey and Ben.

Luke has been somewhat retconned as the weaker sibling (Yoda's "there is another", Leia revealed as refusing to train, having seen the future, Luke triumphing over adversity/failure where Leia was always successful against the odds) but Yoda knew they could not break the Emperor's hold on the galaxy without Anakin. He also knew Luke was the one who could get close enough to Vader to find Anakin. Luke was never "the chosen one" - he was the last hope of the galaxy not for what he could do, but who he was.

Finn - thought his character was far better developed than in TLJ. A suicide mission to destroy the main ship would perhaps have been an apt ending for his character. (Not as good as the TLJ setup IMO).

Poe - Finally a bit of depth to his character - would have liked the "mistake" to drag on a little longer - be more helpless before Lando arrived. Felt ROS made him into more of a "Han" character, the interactions with his former flame - whilst played for laughts - provides an interesting dynamic.

Rose - one of many middle fingers to Rian. Very little to do, her role taken up by the other ex-stormtrooper girl.

Leia - Amazing how well they did - how much of Leia was in the film. A few times it was obvious scenes were written around what footage they had - but incredible.

Luke - A small counter-balance to TLJ, not much else he could do.

Lando - Fitted well, his brash style in small bursts. The "where are you from, why don't we go find out" bit was a little (lot) creepy (girl behind me actually called him a dirty old man, and her boyfriend responded "yeah, that's kinda his thing").

Palpatine - Awesome performance. That voice is so.... menacing. Felt this really brought Star Wars back into a continuing story, after TLJ did it's best to step away from Bloodline/Saga. Not sure when others are adamant this character was a clone - I feel the body destroyed in the OT was a clone?

Interesting the draining life force from Rey/Ben to restore him - I thought from TLJ images that was the Snoke throne room red thing (they watched ships destroyed on it instead)

Snoke was a clone - Fitted Rian's mistake of killing Snoke with a simple, unspoken shot.

Evil Rey - I wanted to see more of this character.

Why didn't Rey turn into a force-ghost? She wasn't pure - at the time of her death she was fighting with Anger and Revenge (dark side) and enforced her will on the force.

Why did Ben? He had faced his inner demons, resolved his past and was pure at his time of death.

How did he get out of the pit? Magic. (This was one thing that troubled me funny enough).

Ben/Rey Kiss - Didn't like it. Hugs have been numerous throughout the trilogy. This felt like it didn't really fit. Also, I'm not sure if Daisy herself or her characterisation/direction as Rey, but all her physical contact in the movie powerful and 'manly' (sorry), rather than affectionate and "soft".

World Building - It's the little things - the creatures in the foreground at the start of a sweeping shot, background characters just living life, dirty clothes, etc. It just felt "Star Warsy". TLJ felt like everyone was NPC only there to advance the story, where as ROS felt like we were just a tiny part of the wider universe.

Humour - Not sure if Rian is just immature, or that's his style, but there were less forced jokes (they fly now aside), and the work by Anthony Daniels was fantastic. (That look over his shoulder got the biggest laugh of the whole movie).

Circle is complete Rey - the thought that - having lost/used all her force powers in the final fight with Palpatine - Rey may travel to Tatooine, fall into slavery and suddenly find she is pregnant....

================
Interestingly, there's more seats pre-sold to tomorrow's 6pm session than there was to any of the sessions I've looked at so far. I've got a feeling this may be a sleeper hit (if a multi-billion dollar movie series can be a sleeper) as word-of-mouth is dragging people in.

Yeah, it seems to be mostly people with monotone voices in those videos. Makes it feel like a conspiracy.

So hard core fans don't like the movie but you're telling me it's a movie made for SW fans?

Doesn't that audience score include people who aren't SW fans? Most people I know who like it are casuals who just want to look at pretty pictures and action set pieces and not think too much about the plot.

Wait till RLM have their review they will absolutely smash this film. I some times wonder if they're even SW fans when i watch their vids

They aren't, they're Star Trek fans.

Well yeah the hardcore fans don't like any of the Disney SW.

Most of those guys are socially awkward, I wouldn't take any cues from them

The broader point I'm trying to make is: this film, in particular, moreso than TLJ will elicit different responses from different people and it isn't clearly possible to put people in neat little brackets. "Non-SW fans will hate this" "TLJ haters will love this" "TLJ lovers will hate this" etc. I see casuals who love it, casuals who hate it, TLJ lovers who love it, TLJ lovers who hate it, etc.

Also, hand-waving hardcore fans as being unreliable because they're 'socially awkward' while posting on a sub-form of a footy board is.. an interesting take.
