Re: VFL and State Leagues

Subiaco are to wear a a one-off commemorative jumper for long-time major sponsor, QBE, this weekend.

When I heard about it I thought it may just be a maroon and gold version of Sydney's hooped QBE jumper, which of course was the "bumblebee" heritage we wore last year.

While the sky blue looks quite dramatic, I think it's a great colour combo (biased West Ham fan :D) and a nice way to work it into the current design. I would have made the numbers (front and back) white, or the QBE logo gold, however.

Re: VFL and State Leagues

From the limited pictures, all blue back with gold numbers (maroon outline like front) and the same 125 years QBE logo underneath. I'd say there would be the Driftwood Wines text in white above.

As for gradients, it may seem like that, but certainly on the away jumper its better than having blocky tops of the stripes of varying heights. Not an issue on the home jumper because of the monogram integration.

Interesting to note the use of the gold lion rather than SFC on the breast in this one, and Subi's first use of the new Sekem collar/cuffs/tag and hence screen printing of the new sponsors.

This is from quite a few pages back, pretty sure their inaugural guernsey is #1

Well at least Sydney had the brains to stick to their club colours. I know the WAFL clubs need all the money from sponsors they can get, but this seems totally unnecessary.

If you read up on how Western Underwriters (as they were then) saved Subiaco, and perhaps inadvertently other struggling clubs, from the scrapheap in the 80's, you can understand why the Lions would pay this sort of homage for one game. The best account of it is in the Diehards collection (history of SFC), but it's intriguing stuff.

Just on the Peel situation - PaulieG listed #2 as the Thunder's "clash" jumper -
a) can anyone enlighten me as to who exactly they would have clashed with (the "classic" Peel strip was worn fine against Claremont for years)
b) all pictures (maybe half a dozen :p) I have found of Peel from 1997-98 are in this strip, can anyone confirm that it wasn't infact their foundation jumper?

Can only think East Perth maybe but even that is pushing it

Re: VFL and State Leagues

Here's one for WAFL enthusiasts;

Stumbled upon an archived Perth Demons website from 1999 (unsure if official or a fan's... who knows how far behind the times 'Wester Rules' was in the day)
http://reocities.com/Colosseum/arena/7160/1999/clubnews.html#merchandise

Amongst the very interesting whispers about the many merger proposals, Claremont/WCE & Souths/Dockers alignments and apparent league-wide financial mess, there was a snippet about Demons members voting on the jumper for season 2000.

PaulieG's resource tell us that the jumper they wore in 1999 - not even in the options! - in fact continued into the new millenem. It wasnt until 2001, when the 'WAFL' name returned, that the traditional sash was brought back.

Cannot, for the life of me, imagine the uproar if something like that happened to a club like Perth in this day and age... Yet this sort of thing happened to Subiaco, South Fremantle, Swans and of course West Coast.

While we're on WAFL, great to see Subi not give in to the temptation to wear the gold QBE guernsey in the GF against Claremont yesterday. I actually believe the strip looks best in the white shorts, which we havent worn in two years (gold with maroon shorts is worn at all away games now)! I honestly thought they were gone for good.
Struggling to get over the result though :(

Re: VFL and State Leagues

I hate Claremont. Private school boys and their zoning area centers around my town. Ugh.

So it's not daft of me to presume that Claremont might - traditionally at least - have more than it's share WA's small number of kick 'n' clap type's.

State Leagues Jumper Ideas

Post your jumper ideas for SANFL, WAFL, VFL etc. in this thread.

NOTE: Could you please delete the other thread Doc

Edit: sorry Doc, I thought this was more of a resource for what has been worn.

Can somone make this a sticky with all state leagues in it aswell as afl jumper sponsors (gibbsys thread)
& lock it?
I found this through google never would have seen it otherwise.

Imo we need a megathread resource as a sticky so all others can use it as a resource

Re: VFL and State Leagues

A couple of posters have made comments about histories of jumpers at WAFL, VFL, SANFL clubs. After first viewing Mero's AFL jumpers website a couple of years ago, I got inspired and tried to develop a similar history of WAFL guernseys.

The information that I have been able to find is based largely on the WAFL Football Budgets (WA's equivalent Footy Record, which I have collected every issue back to 1954), Westside Football newspaper (1979-1997) and various club history books. I have also written to WAFL clubs asking for their input and confirmation, but only a few clubs have replied.

Anyway, the following images are what I have been able to find so far. I have combined each club into a single image for the purpose of displaying on this board as it would be very time consuming to post almost 200 separate guernseys individually. Some of the guernseys may look the same as an adjacent one, but they vary slightly with collars, jumper numbers, etc.

Straight off the bat, I do not claim to have the same 100% accuracy of Mero's website, but I am confident that it is pretty close. Also, given that lack of info, I have also assumed that jumper numbers were introduced in 1912 (one year after the VFL), but I am happy to be corrected. As always, I would welcome any feedback or errors.
