Should not influence our decision.

I think it should influence our decision but it should not be in the top few drivers of our decision making process. If we are undecided between Ebert and Collier (for eg), then the go-home factor might be what swings us to Collier. But if Ebert is clearly the best available player, then I agree that his hometown should not sway our decision.

Clearly we do worry about the go-home factor. We avoid Vic Metro players like they have smallpox.

For me, I think we make up our minds in the interview as to whether a player is too big a risk to "go home". More often than not though, I think the recruiters back the club environment to keep them.

Yeah, if you can't split two players, you'd go for the one with the lowest risk.

That said, if one player is better than the other, take them regardless.

Part of the problem this year is that almost every player mooted for the top 30 has some sort of query over a fairly integral part of their game. I don't think I've seen anything like it - normally there might be some minor issues with a few players but it is made up for by other outstanding attributes. Maybe it is just that the analysis of the draftees is becoming more sophisticated which then highlights faults more than attributes...not sure

But I think what it means is that it is so difficult to work out a pecking order. It might mean that clubs look more to non-football factors to separate the players. Leadership, maturity, work ethic and, if you are looking to recruit an interstate player, independence from parents, might be big drivers in decision making. I think footy talent is obvious to most - the other stuff is harder to judge.

Exactly why outside of Kruezer and Cotchin clubs should be drafting for needs this year rather than purely "best available".

But even within "player types", there is some uncertainty. I really don't think many people can separate the top midfielders. Not because they are all so good but because there's at least 1 aspect to each player's game that makes you doubt them. Same for the key forwards where guys like Gourdis, Grant, Henderson etc all seem to have quite obvious weaknesses to their games. I think I'd consider drafting by personality. Pick the guy who you know won't leave anything to chance, even if there is a more talented player available.

Do they do psych tests of the kids?

Yep to all of the above.

Deakin University researcher Dr Chris Hickey and Dr Peter Kelly from Monash University have worked for many years individually and as a team, there is much to be found on the net.

“Psychological testing and profiling of players is becoming more important in identifying, recruiting and managing players. The problem is that unlike physical attributes, measuring character is a very inexact science,” Dr Hickey said. http://www.deakin.edu.au/research/stories/hickey/index.php

All very interesting reading... It seems that the Lachlan – AIS-AFL Academy 06-07 Key forward with great leadership – Henderson bandwagon is swelling. :)

I still think that Masten and Ebert would help more but as far as bandwagons go I would have to be on the Rioli one.

For 25 I would I am baracking for - Whitecross then Greenwood then Motlop

For 41 Joseph then Reid (if Burgen is right) then Daye

After that I would change things up a bit as far as who we have taken and use the last two for team needs although probably looking to take a ruck prospect.

FWIW, Channel 7 News here in Adelaide today mentioned that Brisbane are extremely likely take Ebert if he is still available at your pick.

Wasn't elaborated on further than that really.

Thanks for the heads up. :thumbsu:

Happy with that.

Plenty of room on the Grimey bandwagon it would seem:p

Will we be having our own Draft Thread this year?
Worked quite well last year.
If so does it need to be titled 'The Official.......' TBD?

I would start one but I'm a bit gun shy around you guys with such intimidating weaponry.:D

How are the Qlders going about keeping track?
Obviously I can just flick SEN on.
Waiting for the AFL.com link to appear, no doubt that will be a fight to get on again this year.

Do we want every pick put up or just ours & Qlders?

sen.com.au is working for me.

i think bigpond are doing the broadcast online, but i dont have it.
