AFLW Suns AFLW Season 2023

Awesome win for our girls today! Would have been nice to hit 100 points for the first time in our AFLW history but you can't really complain about a performance like that. It's really great to see that last week's loss didn't dishearten them and instead they seemed to continue their good form from that strong fourth quarter against Carlton. Our girls are up to 5th on the ladder and are now guaranteed to finish the round inside the top 8 with a very healthy percentage of 218.3%.

Shoutout to Gold Coast junior and St Andrew's alumni Jamie Stanton who was unbelievable in her 50th AFLW game. She kicked 6 goals today and now leads the league with 7 for the season. Tara Bohanna is also second in the league right now with 5 goals for the season. I'd hazard a guess and say that Charlie Rowbottom is likely right towards the top of the AFLW B&F votes after two really strong performances that included 26 disposals, 9 clearances, 12 tackles & a goal last week against the Blues and33 disposals, 16 clearances, 10 tackles & 9 score involvements today against the Eagles.

Could be a really special season for our girls with the way they've started the season. Just need to keep the ball rolling next week in an away fixture against the lowly Magpies. Membrey's intel should come in handy next week.

Carlton got flogged by North. We really missed a chance last week to put them to the sword. They don't look like being too competitive.

Yesterday was amazing but with a young team, we have lacked consistency so let's hope we can keep the consistent form going and take some big scalps along with winning the wins we need to win.

Last season we finished 5-5 missing the finals by 1.5 games. Six wins got you finals last year so we should look at that as a benchmark for wins needed to get to finals. If we had've got Carlton last week we would only need another 4 to get us through..

I'd rank the teams we play in the following groups:

FIRST CLASS
Adelaide
Brisbane
MIDDLE CLASS
Collingwood
Richmond
Essendon
BOTTOM CLASS
Bulldogs
Port Adelaide
GWS Giants

So we must beat the Dogs, Power and Giants if we have any hope of making finals. We need to win at least two of the middle class games against the Pies, Tigers and Bombers. If we can snag a win either one of the top tier teams (who should finish top 4) then we have done well.

It may actually all come down to the Round 10 game in Mackay for both the Suns and Bombers on who makes the finals!

Nice little carrot on the line for our girls after tonight's result. Beat Collingwood on Sunday and they'll be inside the top 4 by the end of the round.

Collingwood were dominant after that though. Girls are very lucky they didn’t get blown away there.
Still in front at halftime. Need to use the ball better than they have been but ultimately our girls have taken their chances and Collingwood haven't. As was the case on Friday night - bad kicking is bad football - and Collingwood's six behinds shows that.

So many poor moments, and there are still a few who are not clean enough with the footy to keep the footy moving with purpose.

But plenty of really good moments as well. Whitfort a star, and some great contested marks in the last quarter when required. But most importantly taking enough of the chances created. The Pies AFLW team must have been the Demons in the finals. Putrid in front of goal.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here because this doesn't seem right but... is that the first time we've ever played Collingwood in the AFLW? In which case we've got an all-time winning record against one of the foundation clubs and it just so happens to be the biggest club in the land.

Either way, it was a fantastic away win for the girls and doing it at Collingwood's traditional home of Vic Park makes it even sweeter.

Stan-o is still the leading goalkicker in the AFLW this season with 9 majors so far. Hopefully she can keep it going because she's turning into a very useful small forward for us. She's essentially our AFLW version of Swallow.

Lets just appreciate this for a moment
A good chance for us to climb further too. We play the Bulldogs next week who are winless. We could've really been equal top given the amount of chances we had vs Carlton in Round 1!

As I mentioned before, we had to probably beat at least two of the middle tier teams (Collingwood/Richmond/Essendon) which we have ticked Collingwood off the list.

Adelaide in two weeks at Unley Oval will be a tough task but what a great opportunity which could show the competition that we have arrived!

Our remaining fixtures
R4 v Western Bulldogs at HBS (17th 0-3)
R5 v Adelaide at Unley (3rd 3-0)
R6 v Richmond at Ikon (8th 2-1)
R7 v Brisbane at HBS (5th 2-1)
R8 v Port Adelaide at Alberton (14th 1-2)
R9 v GWS at HBS (16th 0-3)

R10 v Essendon at GBR (10th 2-1)
