AFLW Suns AFLW Season 2023

Well done girls! 3 wins in a row for the first time in club history (probably should have been 4) and the club is now in a fantastic position to qualify for its second ever AFLW finals series. 6 wins should get you into finals in this 10 round season so I'd say the girls are half way there now with likely 3 wins required in the final 6 games of the season.

Now the girls get a free hit in an away game against the 2nd placed Crows. If they can find a way to get the W next week then we can start talking about top 4/home finals but for now we'll just focus on Adelaide. Really happy for the girls after several tough seasons and it's just great to see a Suns team maintaining their sport in the top 4.

Shoutout to Stanton again for maintaining her position atop the league's leading goalkicker leaderboard. She has 12 for the season to date. Averaging 3 goals a game is pretty bloody impressive in any football league.

Another massive game from Charlie - 28 touches, 18 contested, 8 tackles, 7 clearances.
Arguably four best on ground performances from Charlie so far this season and I don't think it's a stretch to say she'd at least be the equal leader in the AFLW B&F (Phillips?) award. She's in unreal form and I reckon we'll see it rewarded later in the season when the B&F count takes place. She genuinely looks unstoppable at times.

Unfortunately I was celebrating at Ikon Park so missed all the girls match. It looked close. Were we bad or WB good?
I only tuned in basically at the end of the 3rd.

I think we had good patches where we burst goals. Bulldogs were stronger in the final quarter, but Suns did enough to desperately keep the ball rebounding back.

It looks like we are really trying to move the ball quicker this year so our forwards can capitalise, which I why we are scoring more. Still some skill execution, but our midfield is pretty solid with Bella, Rowbottom, Whitefort and now Stengle. And we have some good interceptors down back.

Adelaide should account for the girls, as them and Melbourne are the two best teams for me. But the Suns have surprised me this year with the development of a few key players. Hopefully they can keep it up!

Our forward line was too good in the end. Missed a couple of good chances but overall were able to convert.
OTH, the Dogs forwards failed to convert a few and our defenders also made some great plays. Saad makes the backline look a lot stronger, she is very good in the air. Overall, felt like we did more with less opportunity.

We were 19 points up late in the third, but did not kick another goal. Dogs controlled the middle of the ground, and put us under a lot of pressure. We had a couple of poor moments in the middle of the ground, with quick turnovers. There were plenty of umpire call/non-calls both ways, but that is AFLW atm.

I think the Dogs kicked their last goal with about 7 minutes left, and we were 1 pt up. In the end, some great efforts by the mids (Chuckles, Single, Whitfort, Drennan) to consistently get it up near our goals. Scored a few behinds, had a couple of decent chances for a goal, but were able to lock it in up our end for long periods, even after behinds. We played that part of the game very well. Girvan some great moments in the last 2 minutes, including a strong mark under the pump.

Shocked to see a crowd of only 1181 attended. Should they look at playing these games at maybe Southport or somewhere smaller
5m on a Sunday, same time as VFL final too (yes, it could be watched on the screen at the game, but still).

It is school holidays, so I guess kids could stay longer so it isn’t a complete excuse. Just an awkward time for families, which are the main AFLW draw.

HBS is a great venue but it is too big for AFLW. They have been talking about doing up the elite oval with a little grandstand - that would be perfect for AFLW. You mention Southport - we have actually had two games that have been scheduled to be out at Southport but COVID impacted both of them (2020 v Adelaide and 2022 S6 v Geelong)

We've had a big reset from Season One. From our inaugural team that played GWS in Round 1 2020, only Ahrens, Stanton, Howarth and Bella remain. All the coaching staff has changed too. This was only just over 3 years ago! A lot has certainly happened since February 2020 in football and life!

From that team, Pregelj (Brisbane), Hammond (Power), Hamilton (Sydney), Surman (Geelong), Yorston (Power), Dunn (Power), Heslop (Brisbane), Watson (St Kilda) are all on AFLW lists elsewhere

I think we could have a crack at Jacqui Yorston in the off season to see if she wants to return to the Suns? Yorston I believe is home sick so may consider being traded to Gold Coast. She has moved back to the GC this year and is on Port Adelaide's inactive list.

she was at the game against the eagles the other week with her partner, i reckon she'll be a sun next season

Pretty much a free hit today. Not expected to win nor get close but at least go to Adelaide and give it a crack! You never know! A win and that really cements us in the top half of the 8 and gives us breathing room from the teams on 3 wins. A loss and we stay in the mid table pack. We can’t afford a big loss - need to hold onto as much percentage as possible but Adelaide are a classy team and could win the premiership. They are one of the top seeds that’s for sure.

Definitely! I would go as far as to say this is the first time our women have had a real opportunity to stamp themselves as a serious finals contender. Remarkably this would be a fourth consecutive win for our girls and would move us into equal 2nd on the ladder with a seemingly winnable game against Richmond next week as well.

Look out for Charlie to have another massive game and continue her march towards a maiden AFLW B&F medal.

We looked to had started off well but the last 5 minutes has been so disappointing - we have literally gone to sleep

After 5 games I have to say we did make progress compared to last season. The midfield is starting to look good. Bella got a strong opponent today. Defending well.

Crows and Melbourne are clear juggernauts this year. Yes, we lost by 32 but there was not much difference between teams except execution under pressure. We missed some opportunities inside 50. Except 3 quick goals late in first quarter it was pretty even game. A lot to like. We brought it to Crows for the whole game.

It will be interesting to see how we go again on the road against Tigers.

Just can't compete on the outside, both with skill and speed. Not clean enough either.

Inside we are very very strong, but not enough players are average kicks or better. A few, including our best player, are well below average. Need to hit a target more often, so we can get it forward and keep it there.

Got some good markers, some goal kickers who do enough from limited opportunities, some great tacklers, a lot of effort and intensity, but those turnovers and/or fumbles make it very hard against teams that don't do that (like the Crows and Demons and Lions). We are better than most teams that also turn it over a bit.

IMO, we improved compared to last year and not very far off. I thought we covered the ground pretty well, set up defensively quite well. That first 10min we were under enormous pressure and defended well. After that it was close to equal. Crows is unbelievable team and basically destroyed all teams late in games but not us. We run out the game strongly. Not easy to do it in Adelaide. I am still impressed.

Yes, some execution mistakes hurt us. A lot to do with pressure from Crows. Stanton missed some opportunitis.

I should have added "on the outside, against the best teams".
imo, there is still a gap to the best teams.
We are definitely better than last year, and that is without Kindy. She was probably our best field kick.

Richmond on Sunday is a massive game. We need to get revenge for the game against them last year at Punt Road where we fell just short! It will be a top 8 showdown at Ikon - where we celebrated premiership success just over a week ago. Win and that really sets us up with winnable games to come against PA and GWS which would get us to 6 wins. We are in 5th spot leading the pack on 12 points but we need to keep the wins up.

This weekend in our pack, Carlton should beat the Dogs and would move up to 16 points. Essendon and Geelong play eachother so one of them will move up to 16, and Fremantle play North - North should win that. If that all happens and we win, we would be on 16 points with probably two others but most importantly get a game clear of the middle of the table who would be on 12 points. That would put us in the elimination final position - most likely where we will end up if we play finals.

I was at the Hawks v Lions game yesterday and although Brisbane won, they didn't look too convincing especially with their first half. We are a chance to knock them off at home in a fortnight although I had them in the top tier section of the ladder. That is probably our most difficult game to come.

Fixtures to come:
R6 v Richmond at Ikon (7th 12 points)
R7 v Brisbane at HBS (4th 16 points)
R8 v Port Adelaide at Alberton (14th 4 points)
R9 v GWS at HBS (18th 0 points)

R10 v Essendon at GBR (9th 12 points)

Probably fair to say our girls will need to beat Richmond this weekend to have a legitimate shot at making the finals. I'd like to think they should be able to bank two wins against Port Adelaide and GWS, but that only gets the team to 5 wins and you need a minimum of 6 wins to play finals. I think we can pretty safely rule out a win against Brisbane next week so that just leaves the Richmond and Essendon games which currently seem like 50/50 matches based on the ladder. Therefore, beat Richmond this week and our girls put themselves in a fantastic position to qualify for the finals this year. Would be fantastic for morale around the club if our girls can keep the positivity going after our win in the VFL grand final a fortnight ago.
