Surely Caff is not in our best 22

Malthouse did the same thing. Chad Morrison, Andrew Williams, even Shane O'Bree at one stage when he was having a stinker every week were some of Mick's favourites that found it hard to be dropped. All coaches probably their faves.
Can't see the problem with Caff though, he was very effective in 2010 and I don't see what's so bad about his kicking. The only thing I'm concerned with is that he's now had 2 knee recos so his best footy may be beyond him.

Just how effective was Caff in 2010?

How many goals did he kick? Possessions? Tackles?

there is nothing wrong with a good club man who puts in the effort week in week out respected by his peers
may not be best 22 being in the leadership group. get a grip some people, there is more to being a leader than on
a footy field

I reckon he is.

The last time he played a full season he came 5th in the BnF.
He is versatile, can play up forward or through the middle.
Applies great defensive pressure, which is the focus of our team.
He is fit, hungry and determined.

Well, Howe is out for probably the first month of the season
Elliott is out for probably the first month or even more

There is definitely a spot for him in the forward line.

Cloke, White, Moore, Fasolo, Swan, Macaffer
My guess is Fasolo, Blair, Macaffer and Broomhead will fight for two spots whilst Howe and Elliot are out injured. Not sure about the three talls - will depend on how many ruckmen play.

So its the whole Kyle Martin is better than Jarryd Blair argument all over again?

From everything you see/hear coming out of the club, Caff definitely deserves to be in the leadership group (and his teammates have voted him as such).

His role on field will come down to how well he can reinvent his game (for a 3rd time) - something both he and Bucks have talked about. But if he can becoming effective again as that defensive mid-sized forward (or if we decide to go with a tagger again.... Though much less likely) then I see no reason why he doesn't at least deserve a shot, and could easily see him becoming a regular again if he can do the right things on the field.

I would package Keeffe and Gault and try to get Rioli from the Hawks who I think is a very good list fit for us

Maybe throw in Witts, Moore and Maynard as well.

Not sure who Martin is in this situation.

Buckley's constant raving about McCaffer is making me very nervous. He is in the leadership team as well. This can only mean he is considered a cert to be in our best 22. How can this be? What role do they seem him playing? I have heard references to him playing forward-at whose expense. He is not an electrifier. He is not a reliable goal kicker, his kicking is average to poor. He plays best as a shut down tagger but Crisp and Greenwood can do this and still win plenty of the ball themselves. What are they thinkng?

By the way-is it a golden rule that we must be missing one of our top six players at the commencement of every new season due to some ongoing ailment? FFS-no Elliot for who knows how long! It begins again!!

I still regard Macaffer as an outside best 30 player and I have grave concerns about our probable player selections for 2016 also. Macaffer, White, Blair. Playing any of those guys is just taking senior opportunities away from young players. I also hope I don't have to watch Golds, Gault and Toovey play in the 1s. Golds is allergic to winning the contested ball. Gault needs to start kicking 5 goals every week because I'm yet to see him play to a better than VFL standard. Then Toovey the way he played last year and to a greater extent again the way he is looking this preseason. I'm not liking the look of his play at all and would much prefer to give games to a younger guy who can do more things and offer a better two way game.

It evident that Macaffer works as hard as anyone and displays as much professionalism and leadership as anyone outside of Pendlebury which is all well and good.

I'd just much rather he display those qualities at VFL level and let guys who can win the contested ball, win clearances, hit the scoreboard, take 1v1 marks, break the lines and more generally impact games be playing in the 1s. As a tagger both Crisp and Greenwood are clearly better as both unlike Macaffer can win the contested ball, win clearances and offer scoreboard impact while negating the influence of their opponents.

I should add regarding my objections towards White and Blair. Moore already looks better than White, so White is now superfluous as essentially a shorter, weaker marking version of Moore who also offers less pressure. As for Blair while what Champion Data have to say regarding their evaluation of his play sounds good on the surface but the reality of his play has been that every year since 2011 his play has worsened (less scoreboard impact, less of the ball and more recently less tackles), but what troubles me most with Blair and why I don't regard him as a worthwhile best 22 play is his poor play v good opposition. Stick Melbourne, Adelaide, Essendon or Brisbane in front of him and he can kick a couple of goals and find the footy or play v Brisbane, Gold Coast, St Kilda, Carlton or Sydney (though no goals and only 1 mark). Play a good team such as Hawthorn, West Coast, Fremantle, Richmond or Western Bulldogs and he'll more often than not have a stinker. It's been the same story every year with Blair and is a common problem/theme among smalls having significantly more trouble v better teams with substantially greater differences between their better and worse games than 6 foot + players.

Caff doesn't kick enough goals to justify a role as a small forward and doesn't get enough touches or deliver the ball well enough to justify a midfield position. His only value is as a tagger but we have Crisp, Greenwood and DeGoey who can all play that role and be a whole lot more damaging with their possessions. His is a great story of perseverence and loyal service but the harsh reality is that we are nowhere near a premiership if Caff (and Blair and Sinclair and Toovey and Goldsack) are considered best 22 players.

Three of them might end up getting selected with one on the bench. Fasolo has to be a certainty, Broomhead might get the nod because hes the future, and the last spot may be between Maccaffer (who I'd pick) and Blair.

Has not played a game for how long???
Maybe you have a coach talking up a player to help build his confidence and give him hope that he can break back into the side if he works his ring off.

Or you could be right Buck's is an idiot.

But I doubt it.

Buckley's constant raving about McCaffer is making me very nervous...

I can remember Bucks talking up Cameron Wood a few years back. That didn't go very far. Pied eyed is spot on.

If Caff is good enough he will get games and should. If not he won't, can't see favouritism being a factor. Caff is experienced depth and that is an asset.

So many magpies in this nest flapping their wings. Come on guys, He is just getting back into it after 2 seasons of injuries. Cut the guy a break, he needs a run.. If he doesn't work out i have confidence in the Collingwood Coaching team to bring him down to the VFL. However, No one really knows yet what he bring to the table. I happen to know that he can run all day..

He has tonnes of endurance and in a game with interchanges getting hamstring'd that seems like a solid quality, as for not being as good a tagger as Crisp or Greenwood. They may well have the other skills down, but i highly doubt they would be as effective as negating.

There is still a place and a time for a hardcore tag. Sure i prefer to be optimistic. But doesn't anyone remember this?

Let's be positive and hope he can bring some new strings to his guitar, or even some strings of old. Because he has had some great highlights and i tend to remember the good, before dwelling on the bad. If he deserves to be dropped after a couple rounds in, then so be it. But the man has committed to this club and time and time again shown his commitment, Can't we give a little commitment back?

Caff is now bunking with Blair and Sinkers in the coaches spare room at the Bux household. The three of them like to get up early and tidy up then make tea and breakfast for their coach before he heads off to work in the morning. Bux really appreciates their efforts.
I've heard their tea and breakfast efforts are not best 22 and they should be evicted.
