THE AFL has refused to address startling statistics that further highlight West Coast's home-ground umpiring advantage.

A study has shown West Australian umpires give West Coast twice as many free kicks as their interstate opponents at Patersons Stadium. But AFL spokesman Patrick Keane last night offered only one line in response to repeated questions about the issue.

"Umpires pay what they see," Keane said.

The Herald Sun last month revealed the Eagles were the big winners with 524 more frees than interstate opponents at Subiaco since 2000. But an Inside Football study this week shows the discrepancy is even greater when home-town umpires are involved.

The Eagles have received an average 10.1 frees for this year from WA umpires, compared with 5.2 for their opponents. Non-WA whistleblowers reduced that discrepancy to 8.8 to 5.9. South Australian umpires give the two Adelaide-based teams an average 8.3-5.9 edge at AAMI Stadium, compared with 5.9-5.8 from non-SA umpires.

But in Victoria, local clubs receive only a 5.6-5.3 edge from home-grown umpires, while non-Victorian umpires take that even further, giving the home clubs 5.0 frees compared with 6.2 for interstate rivals.

The study also revealed West Coast was the big winner in scores directly from free kicks and 50m penalties. The Eagles have scored 40.18 this year from those sources combined, almost double Richmond and Hawthorn in equal second place at 24.16. Collingwood had the lowest scores, 12.14.

Another survey released today has revealed that the sky is widely considered to be blue.

Did the study reveal the 20 or so years the Eagles were 'cheated' by Victorian umpires in Victoria..No ..Oh what a surprise.

Study also revealed Victorian teams play the majority of games in their home state, while the Eagles travel every second week. Will the AFL make changes to solve this gross inequity.

The constant crying just does not stop.

Get out of it you troll, you try catching a plane week after week, that's why it's the house of pain, we can't help it if umpires aren't doing there job properly, it's the same for us web we play in vic, the umpires there favour the Vic's more often than not, and you guys treat us like ferals, so bring on our house of pain!

Very average article from Brett Anderson. The front page says 'How the Eagles are beating the whistle', and then goes on to tell you exactly zero reasons 'how', instead spraying a bunch of numbers at you. The numbers themselves are not in any way reflective of the Eagles, only of the umpires. Anderson had the opportunity to look closer at the free kick count in terms of players, coaching styles and gameplans- ie HOW a team would beat the whistle, but as most do took the lazy way out.

The only two reasons given were home crowd influence, and WA umpires locally. You'll notice the sensational 'free kicks by umpire' graphic, which shows that in every state there is a swing to the home team from the home umpires. In fact, if you calculate FF minus FA for home and compare it to away umpires, you can see the swing:

SA 2.3
WA 2
Vic 1.5

A stat not included but far more useful, indicating nothing out of the ordinary at Subiaco from the WA umpires, because the non-WA umpires still have the free kicks well in our favour. And you know why? Oh wait, the article doesn't say, because that would need more analysis than a calculator can provide.

Must be a very noisy crowd then. The loudest in Australia, if not the world.

The mean difference between FF/FA with home town and away umpires isn't that different across three states. WA's isn't even the highest FFS. HUN myth busted.

Another BS article aimed at preying on the stupid and gullible.

Can't wait for how St Kilda posters spin that one. Judging by how their position on what constitutes an advantage changes to match whatever Collingwood gets, I expect that they will suddenly claim that free kicks in the midfield are the crucial ones now.

BTW this is not a complaint about Collingwood's treatment from the umps. I only really have a problem with the overall interpretations used currently and how they apply to all clubs.

haha based on the article, interstate teams to victoria also get an unfair advantage...but apparently thats ok and not biased because its victoria and therefore OK because its worse somewhere else.

this is really playing into our hands. umpires arent going to not pay frees just because to fix some statistic.

Highlighting a startling statistical discrepancy is "clutching at straws"?

Many WCE supporters seem to live in a fantasy land.

haha you guys think there is some conspiracy...and yet we live in fantasy land. Is Julian Assange Victorian?

Both sides of this crap are unbearable to listen to. Theres another thread on the board right now where West Coast supporters are whining about Collingwood not coming to Perth enough.

Well unlike the topic of this thread, that is one statistic where each side should be even. Go figure.

Actually its not WC supporters at all. You should probably apply for a job in the Vctorian media, where facts are replaced by hysteria and twit logic:confused:

damn Victorians with their lying numbers

How about you read the post I quoted.

Also how can anyone trust an article that cites the SEN piece as a "study"........ so gullible.

The HUN is an accidental parody.

So the figures confirm what we already knew.

Don't know what Eagles fans are in uproar over. Nobody is blaming your team or it's supporters, clearly the umpiring though is biased. A slight numerical advantage is acceptable but double the amount is blatantly obvious that there is bias involved.

Can anyone actually confirm the theory that WA umps do not travel? If this is accurate then the system needs an overhaul.

Ben Cousins not apart of the AFL, Nixon is delt with and Fevola is getting pissed else where I guess theres nothing better to talk about.

This is turning into a reality TV show not just AFL the world.

yeh they do.
We see how they don't pay as many free kicks to Franklin this year as umpires have learnt of his tactics to draw a free and we also seen them call play on with the arc and his run into the goals.

We saw the umpires turn a blind eye to usual divers so if they can do that am pretty sure they can start flying Victorian based umpires to Subiaco and adjudicate the game in order to help keep things in control.

The article confirms nothing.

yeah, bring in the more fair and elite victorian umpires. why dont we just have the more fair victorians umpiring all the games. maybe we should just play our home games in victoria, under your watchful eyes, just to make sure things are ok. this is exaclty why you guys are hated. expect extra boos from now on.

have to say, its amazing how often this sort of shite against our club happens when we are challening.

All this proves is that interstate umpires are bias against West Coast.

Kudos for quoting the headline for your response. o_O

The Eagles have received an average 10.1 frees for this year from WA umpires, compared with 5.2 for their opponents. Non-WA whistleblowers reduced that discrepancy to 8.8 to 5.9.

Interstate umpires average +0.7 free kicks per game to interstate sides than West Australian umpires do at Subiaco.

West Australian umpires average +1.2 free kicks to West Coast than interstate umpires do at Subiaco. These statistics are telling indeed.

Victorian umpires giving Victorian teams a 0.1 free kick advantage against interstate sides is telling given how generally rubbish half the Victorian teams have been over the last 20 years. No objective umpire could produce those numbers, no wonder teams turn to gel-lo when they travel west.
