Isn't it amazing that one of the most dominant teams in recent memory could be going into a grand final as the underdog, despite progressing in straight sets.

Is this a case of simply reading form based on recent output or a more perceived style pressure, as Tom Harley would say?

Will it suit Collingwood to go in as underdogs, or is that a furphy?

Its hard to say because I dont think any minor premier has lost by 15 goals in the last game to their equally good rival.

At the opening bounce of the 09 Grand Final, Geelong was a slight favourite over a St Kilda team that went 20-2 and had beaten Geelong in their only meeting that year.
The teams respecctive fortunes in the prelim would have been the main influence on the odds with Geelong doing it easy and the Saints just holding off and impressive Bulldogs outfit.
With Collingwoods hard win last night, if Geelong have a big win today I won't be surprised to see them installed as favourites. All means SFA come 2:30 next Saturday arvo though

If they were to pull it off, how would 3 non consecutive flags compare with 3 consecutive (Lions)? Arguments to be made for either...

If Geelong were to win, they would be comparable with the Hawthorn side of the late 80s. And probably Richmond in the 70s and Melbourne in the 50s. And probably other other examples that I can't think of. A true champion team over a 5+year period.

How can they be going in as underdogs when the other prelim hasn't been played out yet ?

Depends on what happens. If West Coast just beat Geelong, i would gather the Eagles would be underdogs.

Geelong smash West Coast, then maybe so that Geelong start favourite next week.

They'd need another 1 or 2 to truly be up there

Cannot compare lets be realistic here 3 maybe over a 5 year period is not equal to 3 straight.

agreed and If Geelong possibly getting 3 in 5 is any where near the level of what Melbourne done in the 50's then that is setting a pretty low standard to be compared to one of the great era's IMO. 3 in 5 is an awesome achievement Dont get me wrong, I just Dont believe it is the same level as that, maybe a tier below.

As for the Pies being the most Dominant side in recent memory, I disagree, Geelong are still, there record over the last 4 years is un matched I believe, Also beat the Pies twice this year and would rightly deserve to be favorite regardless how much they win by (if they do) today. also just my opinion. Losses to other teams dont over shadow your wins over the other top side during the season

And if Port Adelaide's 2 point victory over Geelong at Skilled Stadium in 2007 has taught us anything, it's that meaningless late season games are a strong formline to take into the Grand Final

one of the most dominant teams in recent memory

say what now??

Are you on drugs? Collingwood have won one flag. ONE! You were one dropped mark away from being eliminated last night, and I KNOW you've whaled on Essendon for underachieving.

In all likelihood Collingwood played their GF last night, and will get caned by a team that can TRULY be called "one of the most dominant teams in recent memory".

Seriously, how can you type that dribble, did you fat fingers hit the wrong keys?

Winning one flag, then boasting for the next 12 months that you have the next 2-3 flags in the bag does not make for a "most dominant team"... it makes for delusion.

You guys will get wiped next week, and then you've won ONE flag from your so called domination period. It's clear as day that the other leading teams have caught Collingwood, and when the new coach and his yet to be determined assistants swing into gear, all bets are off.

:thumbsu: agree with the claims for not being most Dominant in recent memory, especially if it is Geelong you play, only one of those sides has claim to that title. How ever wont write the Pies off till after the GF, anything can happen GF day.

Plenty of if's and but's in this thread....

Geelong are no certainties to beat West Coast yet.

Pies have been a great team for a long period now, who cares who the fav is on GF day?

I actually thought you were referring to the cats

What I find amazing is that the pies are still considered favourites for the flag when there final series really hasnt been all that impressive

Errrm coming away to win reasonably well from a side that applied 100 crunching tackles isn't impressive?

Overcoming a rampant Hawthorn after our AA CHB and 1st ruck were heavily restricted carrying injuries and finishing over the top of them isn't impressive?

Wow, just wow

what have you been smoking? they make the grand final in one year and win a premiership and are a great team.

thats not right and a long period. laughable youre like a 2 year old thinking one and a half years is a long period

Not sure the top two teams have ever played off in the last round before, especially in a dead rubber...

Collingwood lost to Essendon (1st) by a goal and then to Hawthorn (5th) by 12 goals in Rounds 19 and 20........and went on to win the flag in 1990 ......is that close enough?

Recent Premiership teams better than Collingwood:

Geelong: Obvious
West Coast: 1 kick away from back to back
Sydney: 1 kick away from back to back
Brisbane: 3 in a row
Essendon: Dominated 99,00,01
Kangaroos: 96,99 flags and 98 gf
West Coast: 92,94

The list goes on...

Hell Even Port 02,03,05 and to an extent Stkilda 09.10 have been just as dominant. THe first GF was a draw FFS!

Collingwood 1 premiership and should have been eliminated in the Prelim the following year. Were outplayed by the hawks, umpires got them over the line.
