More taxpayer dollars wasted on the soccer world cup. When will it end?

Extra buses have been used for excess crowds during the World Cup. The buses have been running either empty or close to it. The 309 bus to Botany from Circular Quay was empty at 1:30am. Picture: Bill Hearne Source: The Daily Telegraph

The score? Buses 100, passengers virtually nil - Sydney's ghost trains

THEY are meant to be packed with soccer fans celebrating the World Cup.

But this is the empty reality of hundreds of taxpayer-funded buses which are cruising Sydney streets as empty as scoreless draws.

The State Government has been running up to 100 extra buses every night between the CBD and all corners of Sydney since the World Cup began on June 11.

But the Sydney International Fifa Fan Fest at Darling Harbour has been a resounding flop thanks to near-freezing temperatures, unsociable midnight and 4.30am kick-off times and the Socceroos' early exit.

Bus drivers said most of the 2000 services run during the tournament have been close to empty, apart from the two busy weekend nights when the Socceroos played Germany and Ghana.

this line from the Daily Terror is almost poetic in its ability to enunciate the mood of the nation in so few words:

But this is the empty reality of hundreds of taxpayer-funded buses which are cruising Sydney streets as empty as scoreless draws.

And let us not forget that Sydney is meant to be the soccer capital of Australia (a title I'm quite happy for it to retain forever).

I can't understand the fuss?

So, buses into the CBD are empty b/w midnight and 4:30 a.m. So what?

I don't expect any of you to have the mind of Rumpole, but what exactly are your posts attempting to prove?

Each day I'm surprised by the feeble minds on this Forum. There are very few active synapsing cerebral neurones to be found here.

So why do you feel the need to continually respond? Surely you have better things to do?

...with the odd handbag thrown in.

Oh my gosh .. back to repeating the "Sheilas, wogs and ****ters" line.

I guess you guys also giggle at the genitalia jokes on the Footy Show?

You can learn so much about a person by observing their sense of humour and what makes them laugh.

We're certainly dealing with the low-IQ demographic when you "handbag humour" is used as an attempted put-down!

I would never stoop so low, afterall, I am a wog.

But I think rugby has the right idea:

Coming from an AFL fan this is sooo funny.

You actually spend money each week to watch a group of guys, who are dressed up in tight shorts, wear a singlet and rub baby oil on their arms.

I guess, it's just a matter of doing the duck test.

"... most of the 2000 services run during the tournament have been close to empty, apart from the two busy weekend nights when the Socceroos played Germany and Ghana."

Now then, who was it that was suggesting that the support for soccer was more than just the casual fan supporting Australia? Furthermore, the numnber of people turning up to the outdoor centres to watch Australia play were indicative of the general level of support for soccer itself, not just support for Australia playing international sport?
