Sydney International Fifa Fan Fest has been a resounding flop

No - Australians noticing that soccer, and the World Cup, ain't what it's cracked up to be.

Kudos to Australians, Canadians and Americans for being so discerning.

so they've only opened their eyes to certain things

The Herald Sun, who is not noted for being Football-friendly, is going out of its way to encourage people to party during the remaining WC matches ... even though Australia is long gone from the competition.

I've never seen such promotion for Aussie Rules, Tennis, Golf, Cricket, etc. etc.

Seems like all media organisations are lining up to stick their snouts in the trough when the announcement is made in Dec-2010.

Well consider this, this cost a hell of a lot of tax payer dollars to set up so people might as well put it to use.

What are the tax payer dollars to which you refer?

The Herald Sun link refers to "partying sites" in all States of Australia.

The Official FIFA Fan Fest is only in Sydney and the establishment & running costs would be covered by FIFA. The NSW government would only be responsible for security and transport - as with any exhibition or major event.

"... most of the 2000 services run during the tournament have been close to empty, apart from the two busy weekend nights when the Socceroos played Germany and Ghana."

Now then, who was it that was suggesting that the support for soccer was more than just the casual fan supporting Australia? Furthermore, the numnber of people turning up to the outdoor centres to watch Australia play were indicative of the general level of support for soccer itself, not just support for Australia playing international sport?

Right and most of the Metro trains that run after 10pm in Melbourne are near empty, does that also make them a waste of taxpayer's money? We do pay those private operator incentives you know. And the fact that the fan fest site was full before the Germany game kick off makes it a resounding success on its own. This World Cup's TV ratings speak for themselves - Australians prefer the World Cup to their own local game, and the ratings for late night games aren't that far off AFL games in primetime.

I'll leave you with one last figure: 9 million Aussies tuning in to the World Cup's first 2 weeks. No other sport in Australia will ever hope to match those sort of ratings figures for late night telecasts. By the way, what sort of ratings does the post season AFL exhibition match in London post, considering it's telecast in the middle of the night? Anyone care to indulge?

Who would go to an event like this in the middle of the night, when the games are broadcast live on TV.

It's a bad decision to run the extra buses or hold the event at all, but this can hardly be used as proof for soccer interest in Australia, or the viabillity of Australia hosting the WC.

Only one AFL game last night Carlton v Brisbane

Total Ratings for Capital cities: 611,000 (10 didn't even bother to broadcast into Sydney)

Channel 7's comedy: How I met your mother, outrated the AFL game was screened at the same time as the AFL match and had more total viewers.

Only the Melbourne and Adelaide ratings were stronger for the AFL match of the Day than How I met your mother!

And, remember, this is for AFL being shown in prime time. Imagine the ratings if it were live at Midnight or 430 a.m. - would anyone wake up?

As previously discussed, stop trying and pretend cumultaive totals represent distinct viewers. The average is actually pretty poor, and even the higher numbers only manage to get around what the better AFL matches get EVERY WEEK.

By the way, what sort of ratings does the post season AFL exhibition match in London post, considering it's telecast in the middle of the night? Anyone care to indulge?

Now you're so desperate that you're comparing a soccer final with an exhibition match?

What about the Ashes?

"Last Sunday night's exciting end to the second Test outrated the broadcaster's soccer World Cup coverage.

That night, between 7.15pm and 9.30pm, the broadcaster grabbed 1.12 million viewers. Between 9.05pm and 9.10pm, SBS's audience swelled to just over two million."

Yes a bit early, but there have been WC matches starting around 9ish haven't there?

The Socceroos matches were at 4:30 a.m. (Germany), Midnight (Ghana) & 4:30 a.m. (Serbia).

There have been 56 matches played, thus far, and only 10 matches were broadcast at 9:30 p.m.

All other games were live at MIDNIGHT or 4:30 am.

PS: Why did 880k more people tune in for 5 minutes from 9:05-9:10 p.m. during the Ashes. I don't follow Cricket ... did Shane Warne download some photos from his mobile during this 5-minute period?

91k in Brisbane. No Fev or Browny to sell the game and the Lions on a long losing streak. So much for Queenslanders not caring about or watching Aussie Rules Football. Just shows again how much footy has grown in Qld over the past 20 years on top of the quadrupling of participation over the past decade.

Don't worry Figwit is one confused and troubled 46 year old troll who has shown he knows nothing about either Soccer or footy. He had Hawthorn in his profile before his many aliases got red carded and now his new alias has Essendon.

91K only in Brisbane in prime time on a thursday night? Pathetic!!!!

Calrton vs Brisbane out-rated by Netherlands vs Japan (621,000)
http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2010/06/week-25-3.html

That's a serious kick in the teeth for all of the idiots on here who think Soccer has no following in Australia. Very few ex-pat Dutch and Japanese downunder.

Comparing stats that are two weeks apart with one on a weekend and the other on a weekday  and in any case a once in 4 year event to a comp that's on for 6 months week in week out . The World Cup has always had a strong following. Aussies being the sports lovers we are know when sport is a big deal and the World Cup is Soccer's showpiece. It doesn't mean though that Soccer will take over Aussie Rules in Oz as figwit and his zealot-like claim.

Pulling out a one off stat is meaningless btw given Netherlands vs Slovakia got 189k and Paraguay V Japan got 208k this week. Where did the 400k go in the space of two weeks?! So please don't play that silly game. That's Andrew Bolt-like territory.

I mean no way would genuine Soccer fans prefer to watch a group stage game Holland vs Japan over a knockout stage England vs Germany (503k). Any game involving England would easily rate over any game in the WC not involving the Socceroos given our historical links, the EPL coverage we get and the number of Poms and decendents living in Oz. This week's figures are a truer reflection now that the hype has worn off and we're getting into the knockout stage of the WC.

As far as Brisbane ratings last night the Carl vs Bris game was on one hour delay on a weeknight: 8pm - 11pm, key high profile players in Fev and Browny amongst others missing and the Lions struggling big time. 91k is respectable in Brisbane and was unheard of 20 years ago. Only a Aussie Rules-hater would say otherwise. The NRL footy show only got 109k in Brisbane going head-to-head at 9:30pm. It's why the AFL is in this for the long-term.

All of the knockout state games have been telecast at midnight; Netherlands vs Japan was telecast at 9.30pm. That's the one and only reason for the ratings disparity. I'll predict that Argentina vs Netherlands pulls at least 300k tonight. Conversely, Uruguay vs Ghana will have the smallest TV ratings of all the 1/4's being at 4.30am on sat morning - probably the least ratings friendly timeslot, especially on a fri night/sat morning.

EDIT: I didn't realise that the NRL footy show only pulled 109k, so 91k seems like a fair effort. 109K seems like incredibly poor ratings for the NRL footy show - anyone care to elaborate?

Look, anyone that suggests that football is going to over-run Aussie Rules and be the undisputed #1 sport in Australia in the near future need a head check. What's also certain is that there's huge growth left in the A League and football in general in Australia. whereas I believe that the AFL has already peaked. If we were alive in 150 years time I reckon that football would be neck and neck with Aussie Rules, if not bigger. But as for the near future, Aussie Rules is pretty safe as the biggest (but not best) code in Australia.

So can we put off the Australian bid to host the World Cup for 150 years please?

So can we put off the Australian bid to host the World Cup for 150 years please?

No, because hosting the World Cup benefits the country as a whole. Australia is a sporting mad nation; hosting the holy grail of sport, the World Cup, fits us perfectly. Once we have done that, we've done everything.
