Autopsy Tale of two halves vs. Freo

Just had a look at the replay, parts of it. Wanted to see what happened in the 2nd Q.

Two turnovers were costly:
6:42 to go Q2: Stephenson blind handball went straight to the opposition, led to a goal to them when we were 32pts up
3:06 to go. Amiss misses for them, McKercher missed a target on the wing. Comes straight back for a goal to them.

2nd qtr (as well)

Just prior to the Stephenson turnover, no attack on the football from D Stephens, had the easy intercept, but let his opponent walk through. Should have been a goal to them, was missed.

Also a couple of loose handballs from LDU went to the opposition, lucky they didn't turn into goals.

Wardlaw great chase to win to the HTB free but kicked into the man on the mark, lucky it led to nothing.

* Can't bring myself to watch the 3rd quarter. Let the club do that.

** Fourth Quarter: The ball that hit the behind post on the full from them in our backline? Boundary said it was on the full, was OVERRULED by the field umpire. At that stage there was 7:45 to go and if we'd kicked that goal (Paul Curtis was closest and would have had the shot), we'd have been 13 points down with nearly 8 minutes left. We could have pinched it from there.

We were 10m away from it on the fence. We saw it as clear as day. On TV there's an oldish guy with glasses screaming at the umpires afterwards. That was me. My son to my left doing the same thing.

A disappointing outcome for the Kangas after dominating the first half. Freo applied the heat big time in the 2nd half and sadly we folded under their pressure. Will start with the NM votes.

3. Tom Powell
2. Bailey Scott
3. George Wardlaw

So what are the positives here for the game?

  • First half of the backline and distribution into the forward line was super slick.
  • X is super important in the middle and feeding his mids.
  • Zurhaar in the guts made a big difference. That call should have been made earlier
  • Pink did a little better this week, and hopefully he keeps growing 2nd game in
  • Paul Curtis plays well above his height/weight and as his motor grows, so does his impact on the game
  • Wardlaw is tracking nicely 10 games in
  • Could have gotten even uglier than the final margin, so some fight observed in the end.

Negatives

  • Goal/Field umpire call when that ball slammed into the point post.
  • CCJ did not back up X, and when Luke Jackson cut loose and got Freo back in the game.
  • Terrible set shot kicking from Dursma/Larkey/Sympkin, especially when our foot was on Free’s throat in the 2nd QTR. We should have been 45 point up. Give a good team a sniff and they will punish you.
  • I can see why Sydney let Dylan Stephen’s go. 8 disposals in nearly 100 mins game time. Another one who had a ripping pre-season which counts for nothing in a real match. What was his role?
  • Missing tackles or just not holding on long enough. Especially in the 2nd half.
  • Corr was horrible again, and each night I say a prayer to get Griffin Logue back.
  • LMac first game back was either rusty, or he has not improved from 2023. Can’t see him holding his position as Captain even. He is lucky Goater is out.
  • Sheezel and McKercher need to play a little bit of defense from time to time.
  • Coaching - what was plan B, C and D when Free started on their roll??
  • Crowd for a home game.

Till next week

Was at the game and all of those stood out.
I haven’t seen the replay with the post ball, but my initial feeling was that it was touched and that’s why it was a throw in.
Didn’t stop me voicing my displeasure though….

I’m all for the CCJ hate but I think it has to be equally shared with Larkey. I’ve only seen him jump an inch of the ground hoping for perfect placement above his head. Other than that, I did not see him run and attack a ball.
I can copthat but larkey has more credits rhan ccj ever will have

There is a thread for votes.

Was oddly cathartic to feel everyone go bonkers at that call. The animosity to that point had just built up and built up. I wasn't certain on the replay either way, felt to me like one part of the ball could've hit the ground. Also an extremely mild consolation to read that a one-footed left-footer would've taken it. Sure, PC is capable of brilliance, but a right-footer takes it from there and it's a goal 8 times out of 10.

Oh well

Agree.
Larks needs to accept that he won’t get the frees he screams for. Strangely enough, when he accepts that he might actually get a few.
He dropped a mark that he would usually take after our positioning his man. Had a few almost moments and looked to be hobbling by the end.

I don’t think there was anything specifically that changed and gave freo a massive leg up. I think after three missed scoring attempts when senior guys needed to sink those shots, things started to get a bit chaotic.
I think what we didn’t have was a level head going around saying guys, calm your ****. Slow it down. Assess your best options and man up.

For Luke to acknowledge it, and from what I saw, it didn’t look like he was going up to Jy and giving instructions to settle things. I think that’s the type of on field real time change which cost us

Good post. There was a lot of finger pointing and headless chook action for a fair while there.

Powell
HM Toby, Fisher, Lazz (I know but I did think he didn’t give up the game when others did) & Scott

Stephenson we saw a Jekl and Hyde performance
Zurhaar needed to be in the middle
Larkey had his least impactful game in months
Tucker did his role
Simpkin I assume was a bit under
Stephens was ordinary
Scott was pretty good all game
McDonald shouldn’t have been straight back in

Gonna guess but Clarko said, let’s see how the young boys keep it up
Great assessment above - Stephen’s role and 8 disposals was really poor. I hope he plays out of his skin next week.

We went at a frenetic pace and the ball movement was ultra aggressive. 45s inside often. Attacking the corridor. We probably didn’t have enough reward for effort.

They adjusted and we tired and we couldn’t go how we were. Or with them.

They got on top and it took us a quarter to even come to terms with it.

By then the game was over.

Defence looked pretty solid when it was a whole team movement. We either went away from what we were doing or simply couldn’t maintain it at the level we had. Then it started to break down. Especially when they put pace on the ball.

When we were good we were brilliant, when we were bad we were horrid.

i dont get why people dont realise defence starts in the forward line/midfield.

Just watching the Syd-Ess game while I read this thread and the worst of all of the boundary decisions just happened. Far worse than Higgins and worse than ours today

Wtf is going on with boundary umpiring ??

Observations:

-CCJ needs to go. Horrible. Sellers to play.
-Stephens poor, can’t find the ball and offers no physicality.
-We need another big body in the midfield. Greenwood has to come in to help LDU and take Cripps. Phillips too.
-Wardlaw, Sheezel, Powell excellent.
-Our backline is terrible. We need a genuine tall down there. Comben should play and when he is ready, Will Dawson.
-We miss Thomas bigtime. How is he out if the game and Pickett is still playing?
-Scott needs to go back to a wing.

In: Greenwood, Sellers, Phillips, Bergman, Comben

Out: Lazarro, Stephens, CCJ, Corr , Tucker

Team

McDonald - Comben - Pink

Sheezel - Dawson - Fisher

McKercher - Wardlaw - Scott

Greenwood - Sellers - Zurhaar

Duursma - Larkey - Curtis

Xerri - LDU - Powell

Simpkin - Ford - Phillips - Stephenson

Sub - Stephens

Some exceptional football in the first half. Really enjoyed watching it. We were truly on fire. But for young teams it’s hard to maintain that level for 4 qtrs. We lack leadership. When the momentum shift was on our leaders and senior players were nowhere, very frustrating. Just needed to put one or two more away when we were 30pts up and I reckon we would have had them. Instead they kicked a few before half time to give themselves confidence. A few mistakes from the young guns but I don’t really care too much. They must be left to play their natural attacking game. Eventually they will put it all together. Our defence looks a bit light against the monster forwards and we need genuine crumbles in the forward line but there was a lot to like today as well.
Nice post

Key defenders are rookie Kal Dawson, mature age debutant Pink, and ******* everything up Corr. That's one certifiable issue. Kal has been ok, Pink improved today, and Logue will be back eventually. So should see improvement on this front.

Then we have a blitzkrieg gameplan that can se us score fast and heavy, but absolutely opens us up the other way. The latter part should def improve as we get more used to it

Defensive pressure in the midfield is where I'm most worried. Consistent issue for years. At least at the contest it's pretty sweet, especially with Big X and Wardlaw crashing in, but in transition we're collectively a bunch of joggers.
Corr the issue
He’s a high priced free agent and let’s face it, he’s been horrible ever since he put on the blue and white
