Autopsy Tale of two halves vs. Freo

Either that or Simpkin & Duursma kicking their relatively easy set shots when we were 5 goals up. Those two could have killed the game then and there.
That’s the beauty of getting out to nearly a six goal lead - you can leak nine goals straight and still be in with a shout in the last. A couple of years ago, we used to run out of puff halfway through the second quarter when we were 9 points BEHIND. By halftime, we’d be 5 or 6 goals down - game over. That’s a big difference right there.

such a minor mistake in the whole scheme of things...umpires make a split decision no replays, get over it.
Another mistake in this dreadfully officiated sport. Should be able to use technology to help the right decision.
Officiating all day was pretty poor, as per usual, just good didn’t impact the result

I was in the cheer squad and the ball thumped into the post. Was it touched? Difficult to say. There were people closer than I was who gave the impression that they thought it was not touched.
Was not touched. The umpire was right there. That came after an extended sequence where no 31 for all impressions appeared to be thinking 'ah yes the Freo comeback. Let's creatively jam our way through this. I'll play whistle'.

And can we please not allow DBP to become some kind of vague threat where it's perfectly ok for a player to perform 'hot potato' and let it drop to the ground when being tackled. Happened countless times today and is fast catching up to my other favourite where players get three seconds to dispose of the ball while being dragged to the ground.

Roller coaster of an afternoon. Some of the most scintillating footy I’ve seen this club produce in nearly a decade. Have we seen a better display of foot skills in the last decade than that first half? Some really encouraging signs.

Unfortunately the second half was more of the same we’ve grown used to. Whilst it’s dark to lose such a winnable game, it’s absolutely progress. The last 5 years we may have been “in it” at half time, but we’d be 3 goals down, before bottling it. Instead we were dominant 3 goals up, before bottling it.

Biggest positives for me were:
  • Powell ⭐
  • Wardlaw ⭐
  • Sheezel ⭐
  • Our ball movement in the first half was as good as I’ve seen

Some of that footy we saw in the 2nd qtr rivalled anything I've seen. And I've been going since 1978.

The third qtr was unspeakably bad.

I maintain that someone will cop it at some point.

31 was atrocious.

I certainly saw and heard the ball hit the post. And Lomas is as honest as the day is long - he also had a good line of sight.

I haven't watched the replay, but that free against Jy (that ought to have been paid to him) and that deliberate OOB were also dubious in my opinion. The two handed netball throw in the GOAL SQUARE that every single person in the crowd saw, yet 4 umpires who are paid to watch the game and to apply the rules without prejudice happened to not see... And then there were the other incorrect disposals and high tackles.

I hate football.

I don't hate North Melbourne so that's why I go. But the sport is about as straight up and down as World Championship Wrestling.

It was and has been an absolute shocker with officiating across this weekend so far….. to the point commentary teams are actually going HUH????? What will be interesting is the wash up in media land ..will they address it or gloss over it…
Footy …all l want is consistency from officials….lm reminded of a quote about…..a great game is where either teams supporters don’t recognise the umpires….they walk away thinking wow….got a way to to get there l think.
But now that lve somewhat calmed a bit l saw this post from the pres….
the responses to it from her are worth a read when clicked on….
after a frustrating day it was a bit of sunshine l needed…and yes..this is legit…

When a ball hits the behind post on the full it is out of bounds.
The goal umpire had his arm out horizontally. He signalled out of bounds on the full. He was there and he was confident.
So then why does the field umpire then bring doubt into it? Piece of shit.
Your colleague literally saw the ball hit the post on the full and there was no deviation to show it had been touched.

I have a theory around modern umpires.
Their decisions are definitely influenced by the fact that we are down the bottom of the ladder and are obviously a lowly supported club.
It means not only do we not get the rub of the green, but there is a feeling that controversial or 50-50 calls that would go a Geelongs way for example, that kind of favouritism is not afforded to us because lol North and Kanga Kanga Kanga shit. We are a gimmick to this generation of umps.
And we cop the most inexperienced and poorer umps each week.

I think the umpiring fraternity, expresses themselves a bit more flamboyantly in our games, almost like its a trial.
They can make mistakes and the AFL will tick it off as its part of the learning process.

I ****ing despise the absolute dogshit ability of these ****wits to control a game.

Vicious cycle...poor timeslots, poor umps, poor calls. Happens in a few sports.

So unfortunately when we are in winning positions, I sit back and ponder how we are going to lose the match. Winning is that far removed from my thinking it’s sad.

At the time though you hope it will be different this time. It’s not. We lose.

That said I didn't appreciate the sheer domination that was the first half. Dominant in every aspect but the scoreboard.

I was more focused on wardlaw and Powell I didn’t appreciate how good ldu was. Or how well we defended and transitioned the footy.

Also, the last qrt it was 12 inside 50’s vs 2 with about 8 mins to play.

So the two concerns are

1: why didn’t we make more of our dominant periods
2: how could we lapse as fast and completely as we did for that 3rd qrt.

To answer the 1st point, we need another key forward. It just has to happen.

That forward is comben. It just has to be. You can’t go from playing him round 1 last year, to playing him as a key defender this year, playing a completely ineffectual CCJ. It’s holding larkey back and costing us goals. It has to change.

Secondly, and maybe this point addresses both of the problems i mentioned, but we are carrying too many guys that aren’t doing enough.

Stephens 8 touches
Tucker 15 touches

I think we should play only 1 of the above. On output to date that’s Tucker, personally I’d play Stephens. Whoever the player is should play with Kerch, sheez and Scott to play 50% wing time each.

Lazzaro. He was ok again. No real stuff ups, relatively clean. But 13 touches from 65% game time leaves you vulnerable.

Sleevo might barely do enough, but he often goes into not doing enough territory because of mistakes he makes. Dursma is out working him which is a bad look for a mentor.

I have Phillips as an in to bring in more clearance, tackling, inside 50 presence. Surely a 18 possession, 5 clearance, 5 tackle baseline game from Phillips is worth more than 8 touches from Stephens when we have a host of other runners.

Comben for CCJ
Phillips in for Stephens/tucker/lazz

Lastly, I wanted to mention the defending. It was much improved despite the score line.

Last week freo kicked goals as follows

Amiss 4
Treacy 3
Cox* 1
Jackson 2

Today it was

Amiss 1
Treacy 1
Tabener 2
Jackson 2
