After reading the millionth person bag the tiges for taking Bling over Buddy, I went for a look in the BF archives...Now personally I think Bling is going to be a very good player and Franklin may end up being more trouble than he's worth....but let's have a look at what people were saying in 2004 before the draft

From the Hawthorn board:
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135957&highlight=tambling+franklin

"Franklin i hope will be given a wide birth @ all costs"
"We'll get one of Tambling, Griffen and Deledio at pick 2."
"im undecided with tambling or griffen at 2 if deledio goes 1, but leaning toward tambling cos there is no homesick factor and he sounds like the kind of player who brings people to the ground"
"Tambling >> Griffin >> Deledio"
"the safe bet would be with Deledio, or if the tiges take him, probably Tambling"
"we take the best available at pick 2 which is
Deledio>Tambling>Griffen"
"Tambling is my choice for pick 2"
"I hope to god Richmond take Franklin"

From the Bulldogs board:
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130508&highlight=tambling+franklin

" I will be more than happy to pick up Tambling."
"If tambling is available grab him"
" Cooney, Ray, Tambling, Cross, Faulkner - gun midfield in the making."
"MY choice would be Tambling and Roughhead!!!!!!!!"
"If Tambling is still available at 6 then pick him up"
"I would be happy to take tambling at 3"
"I think we should take either Tambling and Roughead, otherwise Tambling and Willits"
" Don't want an ordinary good player, want a player who can turn on the extraordinary. Tambling seems to fit this bill."

Then once the draft was done...some Hawks weren't happy:

"We have picked roughead at 2 instead of griffen, tambling, Pick 5 franklin
Great move by our recruting managers agian
Pick the best ********in player avelable
this is a ********in joke"
"Bloody hawthorn finds another way to stuff the year up"
"i'm still in shock, had to have gone tambling then franklin!"
" I can't believe the club overlooked BOTH Tambling & Griffen!!!"
"Im not exactly pleased. Watch Tambling become a star and Bucky be sacked"
"Disappointed to miss Tambling"
"Not over the moon with Roughhead instead of Tambling"
" I am pretty disappointed we missed out on Tambling"
"Tambling will be a star"

so, um...shut up already

I agree that those comments were made by most of us Hawk supporters however what I find annoying is that some poeple from Richmond have forgotten how your coach bagged Hawthorn regarding our selections - how he thought that we were fools for picking Roughead instead of Tambling and how they got the 2 best players in the draft.

What you forgot to include in your post was how many rated Buddy as possibly the best player in the draft however a poor performance in the carnival and a poor attitude resulted in him dropping down in the ratings. However many people from Perth rated the guy and said that if you could coach him then he would star.

All this proves is that Clarkson is very astute when analysing talent for his football team model. At the end of the day, the Hawthorn staff have made many people eat their own words.

And Tambling will be a good player if he is given a role that matches his abilities. It takes a few years for most NT players to find their feet in the AFL.

This is not having a go at Richmond but Tambling is going to be a good player but I just have this feeling that he will get moved on and do his best work at another club. For tigers sake, I hope I am wrong!

I didn't hear anything about Wallace bagging the Hawks for their picks (I was living abroad at the time). I've just heard everyone (especially Hawthorn and Footscray supporters) having a go at Tambling.

And, yeah, some were saying Buddy could be number one, but just as many were saying Tambling could be, so...Both were regarded as having huge potential and both were thought to have a down side (Franklin's work ethic and attitude, Tambling's light frame).

It's just silly, the constant taunting about drafting Tambling when

a) he's still just a kid and has the potential to become a star
b) he was rated as one of the top players in the draft by almost everyone at the time

Unlike you, spending your life telling other people on the internet that they need a life.

I was reading the old threads out of interest. Cutting and pasting isn't hard you know.

Why would you be so insecure as to have to do that. BTW you could just about do exactly the same on any team board regarding the top hand full of picks each draft. A rather pointless exercise.

Despite claims by idiot posters, there are very few people on bigfooty who are talent scouts or actually know how to identify good juniors. Therefore what posters were saying before the draft means nothing, most of them were probably just repeating what they read on other threads.

AFL recruiters on the other hand are expected to be able to do this and Richmond clearly made an error. Don't try to justify their poor choice by bringing up old posts buy people who didn't really know what they were talking about.

What's insecurity got to do with it?

"Tambling or Franklin" has been one of the most talked about draft issues of the last few years. I'm just pointing out that it's ridiculous for anyone to criticize the Tigers for taking the player that most people would have taken at the time (and may still turnout to have the better career).

It's no more a pointless exercise than any other thread in this place.

Whether it was an error or not won't be known for a few years yet.

And where do you think the posters were getting their impressions of the draft crop? The experts rated Tambling very highly and were saying the same things about Franklin's attitude.

It's not Ridiculous to crticise the Richmond recriting staff. Sure it's not an exact science, but to stuff up as reguarly as the RFC have with their recruiting over the past 10 years the blame has to fall back on the club. Lets not forget it's not just the Tambling debarcile.

Just like this year most posters were getting their info from what they read in other threads, and the remainder by watching games when they haven't been trained for what they should be looking for.

Just imagine that a bigfooty poster sees some under 13 get 40 possies and boot 6 goals from the ruck. He probably gets on the site posting he has just seen the next Dean Cox. What he doesn't realise is that this kid might be fully grown and more developed than his opponents, meaning that its not hard for him to dominate his local comp. Although in 5 years when the others have caught up he might not be that special anymore and this is what recruiters are expected to understand.

Tambling wasn't a bad pick...

Other #4s this millennium:

2000 - Luke Livingston (Carlton)
2001 - Graham Polak (Fremantle)
2002 - Tim Walsh (Footscray)
2003 - Farren Ray (Footscray)
2005 - Josh Kennedy (Carlton)
2006 - Mathew Leunberger (Brisbane)

Tambling doesn't stand out as a bad selection in that group.

You're saying Leuenberger was a bad pick? You really have no idea do you?

Not saying that at all. Just saying that Tambling doesn't stand out as a bad pick if you compare him to other recent #4s. Even if he never gets any better, he's not the worst of that group. And he will get better.

it would all be different if Tambling had of gone to Hawthorn and Buddy to Richmond.

Hawthorn have shown they can develop talent, so Tambling would possibly be a top midfielder. But Richmond can't develop talent and thats why his turned out to be a dud. If Richmond had taken Franklin we would have had a 21 year old Richo right now instead of one of the best young talents in the game

Regardless, of hindsight.
Richmond continue to struggle at developing their youngsters.
All the while, continuing to top up with flankers and willow-the-whisp types.
Richmond severely lack grunt....have done for many years...perhaps Wallace is finally waking up?

It may not have been Richmond's recruiting staff or Wallace bagging Hawthorn's recruiting or selections but i distinctly remember watching on TV the Tigers parading and showing off their new recruits at the Presidents house (pretty sure it was there and having what looked like a BBQ)- it sounded like they had won a premiership or landed the coup of the century in both Browny and Judd-nothing wrong with that at the time but in hindsight they probably wouldn't have done it that way.

There is no doubt both have the talent, the potential and the hype to become stars but the difference is people will always judge it on performance >>>> talent/potential/hype.

Buddy is a superstar and probably the biggest thing in football since Wayne Carey- he could become anything. Tambling is a kid with potential and was rated highly in that draft pool, however, like Tambling, Buddy too is a kid with potential- only difference being with Buddy you should 'believe the hype' so to speak because he has delivered constantly as a top-line performer and justified his hype.

Hopefully Tambling comes along as many Tiger fans hope and can justify his selection over that of Buddy's but at the end of the day this will be talked about and remembered as a 'draft blunder' in terms of not only overlooking Buddy in the draft but also him becoming not only the best player of that draft but even the best player the game has ever seen.

Geelong won a premiership from a core group recruited in 1999. It has thus taken 8 years for that recruiting to come to fruition. Give Wallace and co. a chance to show their wares in the long term.
Most of the people that bag the Tigers recent recruiting come from Carlton and Hawthorn. In the time period outlined above, neither team has won a premiership. Thus no bragging rights should be granted to them. When their team captain stands up and holds the premiership cup aloft, I will start taking notice of them.
Until then, GET A LIFE!

I remember, thinking that he'd be the best from that draft and so far i think i was right. I'd heard a lot about him from my mate who played against him.
