The best full-backs I've seen were Dench, Scarlett and Southby.

It has always mystified me why Silvagni was named FB in the Team of the Century. We now know why. Dench and Southby were ineligible, as they weren't members of the Hall of Fame in 1996 when the TotC was announced and adjudicated upon.

Allen Aylett explains that he doesn't believe Silvagni would have been seriously considered, but they were left with little choice. All of this, of course, is hardly Silvagni's fault and a marvelous player he most certainly was.

Pretty disrespectful to have that reported... What's SOS supposed to do now go and give his medal and his placing to Dench? SOS was a modern era champion who at no fault of his now has to deal with being the asterix full back of the century.

AFL should apologise for that being allowed to get out and be reported. And Robbo typical Carlton hater prob jizzed himself with that story.

Why weren't dench and Southby in the HOF? surely if they were the greatest FB of all time they would be in the top 135?
It had nothing to do with the position. They were ineligible to be picked in any position because of the rule that the selectors could only pick players from the HoF, or current day (of that time). If you actually read the article you'd understand this, and you wouldn't have needed to ask.

Maybe if u read his post u would see he was asking why weren't they in the HALL OF FAME. Seeing as though they were the greatest fullbacks you would think they would be in the original 135 Hall of famers.

read the article. Did you read the Question? Seems like a major oversight that the Hall of Fame was set up without the best Full Backs of all time...

Teams of century are always going to be contentious. It always over values champions of the day over the champions of 100 years ago. I bet they liked the idea of a couple of current players anyway, They Must have expected SOS to take over.

Pretty straight forward I would have imagined. There was a massive intake, if you wanted to name one of those blokes as the FB of the century it obviously leads to just induct them into the HoF so that you can.

But SOS wasnt inducted at that time either so the whole argument falls to pieces.
