Team Selection Round 1 - 2010

B: McGrath Merrett Johnstone
HB: Adcock Maguire Patfull
C: Sherman Rich Drummond
HF: Staker Brown Power
F: Buchanan Fevola Banfield
FOL: Clark Black Brennan
INT: Leuenberger Redden Rischitelli Raines

EM: Polkinghorne Rockliff Stiller

This group of 25 excites me. If we can afford the last 3 to miss selection, then we're going OK.

This is the side I would like to see, but I imagine that Voss would probably want one or two more experienced heads in there somewhere:

B: McGrath Merrett Johnstone
HB: Adcock Maguire Drummond
C: Patfull Brennan Rich
HF: Staker Brown Sherman
F: Buchanan Fevola Power
FOL: Clark Black Redden
INT: Leuenberger Rischitelli Banfield Rockliff

EM: Polkinghorne Stiller Proud

So you reckon Voss will put Banfield and Rockliff in the team?

Banfield will get Hooper/Harding spot from last year.
Rockliff and Polks are fighting for the same spot.

Can't believe we could actually afford to leave Polks in emergency. Hope the squad could gel together. It'll be fun to watch.

So you are on their bandwagon?

Absolutely.

But the reality is there are four 2nd year players in my team, plus another 4 who have never played a game for us. Players like Selwood and Stiller tend to be unfashionable to supporters but not to coaches.

Upon seeing this I felt compelled to do a double take over your list; '"4 who have never played a game for us," I see them, now four second year players? I see three, who else does he mean?' It took a few moments before I remembered that Rich was the fourth. Far out, it is so easy to forget this bloke is only in his second year. Gun.

Technically Banfield falls into both categories.

But that's just nitpicking.

Yeah but Patfull looks set to take one of those positions, from all reports the 2 kids are playing significantly better than Polkinghorne and Proud who are kids themselves.

I like both 22's on this page...... and no discussion on how close Hawksley and/or Austin might be to selection. I think selection nights are going to be very tough at the Lions this year.

Yeah with lions.com naming Hawksley and Rischitelli amongst our best players on Friday there is no doubt that some good players are going to miss out.

Possibly. It was only one game, although Stiller and Selwood both played in the 2s which suggests they might not be in contention.

I guess it is a case of how much does the NAB Cup count for? Polkinghorne is the incumbent. Are 3 NAB Cup games enough for Banfield and Rockliff to overtake him?

Sometimes it is handy to see who we are playing: A possible line up from West Coast.

B: Waters Glass Jones
HB: Hurn Mackenzie Butler
C: Lynch Masten A Selwood
HF: Embley Kennedy LeCras
F: McKinley Brown Niknat
R- Cox Priddis Kerr
I- Shuey McGinnity Swift Ebert

Fairly experience back line getting a bit of meterage from Hurn's kicking.
Lynch in the centre will be hard to contain. The Kerr/Cox combination will need to be watched closely
LeCras can be lively.

I thought the talk was that Lynch was going back to full forward?

Haven't heard too much to be honest but he will be rotated between the forward line and the midfield no doubt. West Coast I would of thought are developing their new look forward line and would not want to deviate from that plan to much.

After the job he did on Goodes last year this seems like a superb idea. While Selwood, Stiller and occasionally Risca have been servicable taggers they don't have the offensive hurt factor that Patful would, and that make Ling and now Clinton Jones so rated. The only concern would be would he have the dash to tag the speedier, smaller onballers (endurance not being an issue), and would we be losing one of our backline stalwarts. The inclusions of Goose, Raines and Hawskley may cover for this loss.

Exactly. He is an excellent lead and mark, has clean hands and may yet be a midfield revelation. He was also consistent, and a regular goal kicker in only his second year. Reminds me alot of Milne and Mark Williams (though has the advantage of being a decent human being). It seems we are trying to fit 8 or 9 players into 6 positions, which is a nice dilemma to have. Buchanon and Power seem certainties, and Staker and Banfield have done themselves no harm in the NAB cup, but I'd be disappointed for Polks to be dropped after being so good last year.

Thinking that Polks and Banfield will get the nod ahead of the Lobster. Polks goal kicking last year was pretty darn good. NAB cup form can be a fools gold but Banfield's speed to break the lines is important. Really want him to replicates Sherman's running game.

I will be disappointed if Rockliff isn't selected in Round 1. Going on his form from the pre-season, he deserves a month in the seniors. I would much rather see Rockliff selected ahead of someone like Staker, who to me, needs to work harder and reach some peak form before being selected.

Likewise, we are lacking small forward options. Whilst Rockliff has been playing largely through the middle, there is no doubting his credentials in being an option to to go forward and kick multiple goals. On the other hand, there is no reason why J.Brennan can't cover the role that Staker has been earmarked for (until Staker is really pushing hard for selection), particularly if we select a team with a deep midfield rotation that frees Brennan up a bit.

Similarly, has Raines really done enough to warrant selection first up? The likes of Selwood, Stiller and Sheldon have not been sighted much this pre-season and therefore I'd have Hawksley coming in ahead of them. Hawksley finished off last year quite well and I believe this needs to be taken into account as to me, he looks to be a player on the rise who is finding his feet at AFL level. He is also a far better user of the ball than others on the list.

Here's who I'd have lining up in Round 1:

B: A.McGrath, D.Merrett, J.Patfull
HB: J.Drummond, M.Maguire, J.Hawksley
C: D.Rich, L.Power, J.Redden
HF: A.Buchanan*, J.Brown, J.Adcock
F: J.Sherman, B.Fevola, J.Polkinghorne
Foll: M.Clark, J.Brennan, S.Black
Inter: M.Leuenberger, M.Rischitelli, T.Johnstone, T.Rockliff

* T.Banfield to come in if A.Buchanan is suspended.

For what it's worth, apart from not being a standout in the pre-season, I think that Polkinghorne dropped off the pace at the end of last season as well. I reckon he'll need to get off to a good start pretty quick if he's to hold his spot amidst the apparent competition for a spot.

A player who hasn't been mentioned much who I am a fan of is M.Austin. I reckon he showed quite a bit at the end of last year and could work his way into the team just as well as some of the other players who will be lining up in the reserves early in the season.

I think Staker has shown enough to get a game round 1. Raines isn't as sure footed, but his inclusion might come off the back of who else makes up our back half. He is a good size and goes hard at it, and depending on our make up, he might have a certain role coming out of the back half, especially if we have some smaller younger players like Hawksley playing back there.
