If you drafted Buddy at #2 then yes it would be counted as a masterstroke. Most recruiters had Deledio/Tambling/Griffen as the top 3.The Hawks always had the choice out of Franklin and the rest as we were going to take Roughead at 4.

It's old ground, and we'll probably just keep going around in circles. As you say, it appeared everybody at the time knew who the Bulldogs and Richmond rated as the top-4, so there was no need to take Franklin earlier. With that in mind, taking Roughy at #2 made sense, given the Tigers interest in him.

At any rate, I was merely taking issue with the clown who seemed to think that the fact that some/alot of the Hawks BF contingent were disappointed we missed Tambling is somehow indicative of us being lucky to snare Buddy. The thoughts of supporters have zero significance in a club's drafting stategies.

It is evidence that most on here don't know what they are talking about. The Tigers boards were THRILLED with our draft - arrogant even, mocking the Hawks.
Shows how much or little the average supporter knows. Clarko was at least considered and a bit lucky, at most a genius.

The point, if there is one, is that on draft day, you really don't know enough to even have an opinion on how you went, and the articles that follow - "rate the draft" types, are a joke.

Agreed.

Let's see how one of Hawthorns favourite sons and b and F winner for Hawthorn goes this year.

If he has a crap year,we can say well we never want a Hawk dud at our club again!

But I have faith.:)

Sorry to say, but he wasnt ever considered a "favourite son". Acknowledged as a great, great player, sure, but a good percentage of Hawk fans took issue with him a long time ago, long pre-dating any bigfooty rivialries.

Fair enough.

Once again the Richmond supporters have a whinge on the radio and call for Terry sacking after round 1.

It is very predictable, but the reality is, it has to happen. Although it is round one, from what I could tell tonight, the game plan has not altered a bit. It was in desperate need, as the game has changed greatly over the off-season as the zone defence spreads. But the early, and I concede it is very early, indication is that our approach hasn't been adapted to counter this.

Carlton deployed a half-zone tonight, and we had no answers. You can not break a zone with handballs to stationary players under pressure. You can not break a zone by kicking short to 50-50 contests. I believe we have the personnel to be quite effective against zone defences. We have a lot of pacy players, who can use the ball better than the game plan is allowing them to show at the moment.

I think its time for Terry to roll out his great quote:

"I have taken this group of players as far as I can take them"

Agreed.

All your want is your team to try hard and look like they care.

How could we turn in such an insipid performance tonight?

It not that we lost , it that our players don't care.

My 7 yo hasn't stopped crying. Poor kid. What do I tell him?

This is no longer funny.

Im sure the weasle will blame the loss on his players for not following instructions as usual.

I cant believe Adelaide considered him for coach a few years ago *shudders*

Don't watch next weeks game and that the easter bunny is on his way

A 0-3 start on the cards...tv terry will blame evryone but himself after an early week deflection comment on something unrelated to the tiges.

GOOOOOOOOOORRRRRNNNNNNN

they'll be mastacating all over him in no time.

Has a coach ever been under more pressure after round 1?

That performance was woeful. Richmond will want to come ot firing next week. Even if they dont win they need to show some interest, some intensity and a willingness to work.

They looked like a team who's coach has lost them. Real trouble for Terry I feel.

I feel for the Richmond fans, they are always so impressively loyal in spite of all this shit.

Richmond is in a very precarious position right now.

Clearly Wallet shouldnt be there - I think its been obvious for a long time he is borderline inept as a coach, and how he continues to get escape "major" critisism in the media especially is beyond me.

My gut feel was Wallets final approval for Cousins was more about himself and survival than honestly recruiting a player Richmond needed. They have some good young talent, play them, because much of the older brigade are not taking them anywhere.

The club, like when he took over, is in the same position and some hard decisions have to be made. Are guys like bowden, brown, Mcmahon etc honestly part of the future down there? Is anyone near 30, Richo aside, doing Richmond any favours by playing, or simply delaying the inevitable?

However, can a coach clearly coaching for his survival (at Richmond or anywhere else for that matter) afford to do this? Probably not. If he allows Richmond to go backwards now, like what should have happend 5 years ago, he then finds himself unemployable as a coach period.

Can Richmond afford to have Wallet stay on as Coach for too long?

I know it seems alarmist, but perhaps the quicker they get rid of him, the better for the club?

Yes but that is what the poor Tiger Supporters put up with every year. A thrashing followed by a "well at least they tried" effort the next week. Richmond has to beat Geelong next week to gain back the respect from the football world that they lost last night.
Irrespective of who they are playing anything short of a win is unacceptable.

How much of a teams performance do you apportion to a coach and how much do you aportion to the recruiter who brought the players there?

Sure Wallace has his faults, but I can't help thinking that it might have been different had Richmond recruited better some years ago. They had 5 picks in the top 20 one year, which they failed to capitalise on.

He is under the pump but I wouldn't write him off just yet. For some strange reason, Richmond churn out absolute stinkers on some round 1's. I remember when we beat them by 20 goals in one round 1, and there was another game when Geelong beat them by 14 goals or so in his first game coaching the tigers. But it is only round 1, still 21 rounds to go.
