1998
  • Senior Constable Allan Sparkes, NSW – Rescued a boy from flooded underground storm water drains.
Rescuing 13 boys from a flooded cave doesn't count though :p
From reading that it seems to be spur of the moment bravery that gets you over the line..
I think because they were specialist cave divers and didn't put there lives on the line directly compared to other Cross of Valour recipients.Having said that they faced incredible risk but it was more a controlled professional job . Richard Harris will be Australian of the year, and he will be more deserving than Mark Taylor or Steve Waugh.

So all the aussie rescuers were given the star of courage by Canberra, which is the second highest civilian honour.
The question is what the **** do you have to do to get the highest honour...
Be an AFL player or Aussie cricketer. Non-ethnic/indigenous as well but that goes without saying.

How is Vernun Unsworth a hero? He did no cave diving. He just happened to live near the cave, and has mapped the cave.Wouldn't any decent person give that information? The heros were the cave divers who risked their lives , not just someone who provided a map.

Vern did more than just "provide a map". According to the Independent:
Mr Unsworth’s intimate knowledge of the cave system, which he described as “second home” after spending six years exploring it, proved pivotal in the rescue mission.

He pinpointed the location where believed the team would have taken refuge, and they were later found 200 metres away from that spot.

Mr Unsworth also put Thai authorities in touch with three British experienced divers who were the first to find the Wild Boars, 1.5 miles inside the caverns.
If they had some other dude with a large knowledge gap about that cave system, it's likely the kids would've been found a lot later and by then it would have been too late. So yeah, he is a hero.

Go back in and try to rescue people in the Bali nightclub with bombs still going off. That 2 of the 5 ever awarded.

Both are awarded for actions whilst in extreme peril, the difference probably that divers lives were not at the extreme risk of those that went back into the night club.

What a strange time these kids have lived through. Stuck in a black cave for 2 weeks not knowing if they were going to live or die. Then a miraculous rescue with them under anaesthetic while underwater.

Then a few weeks later guests of honour at a Premier League game, Man U v Everton. But in the same weekend the helicopter of the Thai owner of Leicester City crashed to the ground.
