Taking the emotion out of this for a moment, it was the right decision by the Western Bulldogs. West is 33, missed most of the season with a degenerative knee problem and his place was taken by a couple of young guys (Hill, Harbrow, Tiller). Football is a team game. Yes Westy has been a champion for the club and has been a sensational servant of the game, but there comes a time when it has to end. What else could the Western Bulldogs do if he refused to retire? Keep him on the list and play him at Williamstown? Wouldn't that have been even more embarassing for the guy.

I think you have to back the club on this one. Their job is to put the Doggies as close as possible to winning a premiership. Would West have made a difference last Friday night? My heart says I wish he would have, but my head says not likely.

Scott West, thanks for the memories. You have been a wonderful servant for the club. The club asks one more thing from you, please retire with dignity.

Spot on.

Exactly.
I really do feel for Westy. Was one of my favourite players growing up and I have enormous respect for him. I wish him all the best with whatever he decides to do now.

However it is the right decision by the Bulldogs. Personally I would have preferred to see West hang up the boots at the end of this year and I don't think he would have had opportunities next year.

Great career, great servant of the club but its all about the future and the time was right.

West with a bung knee still offers more than half of the bulldogs midfielders, very surprising move. He had one more year left in him and he wanted to win a premiership (which is possible really).... and the team shafted him. Isn't he on your veterans list anyhow? You only get a rookie spot out of it big deal. Dirty and stupid move by the club imo.

Underrating us I think..Freo are the masters at recycling old players surprised you didn't ask for a trade.

Actually thats incorrect, he has documentation from the doctors saying this isnt a degenerative problem and all he needs is rest over part of the preseason and he would be good to go.
This is why i actually think he earnt the right to 1 more season, if it were a degenerative issue then i would have no issue with this.

I don't think this is the case anymore.

Our midfield is quite strong even without Westy and with his knee the way it is who 's to say he would be fit to get a spot in it anyway.

I'm very sad and upset that his career at the dogs is over. Despite this I think the club have made the right decision in asking him to retire.

Good on Eade and his panel for having the courage to make a tough decision on a bloke who has a crook knee and is not getting any younger. Do people not think they would have asked him to retire gracefully, he obviously said no thanks, so they made the tough decision that they think is right for the club.

For all the people bagging the Bulldogs lets see how many other clubs chase him, i doubt there would be any club that would be interested.

Tough call but the right one IMO.

Gee, I liked watching this bloke go round. We all have those arguments about "the best footballer/s" and i reckon it all comes down to the type of footballer you like most. I'll take Ablett Jnr over Senior, and I'll take Hodge over Buddy, but thousands wouldn't.
West was one of those blokes that only people that followed Footscray seemed to know much about early on. Then he won a swag of B&Fs and pundits started having the "is he a champion?" discussion. No doubt for my money. I hope he gets a good send-off having missed the opportunity to do it Harvey-style last weekend.
