You build a competitive list with top line mids taken with top picks .

That ship has sailed mate

Except you only get top line picks every so often.

And the AFL has basically destroyed the integrity of the draft.

Geelong, Collingwood havent built their lists with top end picks have they.

Have the Hawks? No.

How has Gold Coast gone with dozens of top 10 picks? Still yet to play a single final.

So the facts clearly dont support you negative view on how to build a competitive list.

Listening to Mini on Gettable saying that WC will take the best available talent with their first pick...

If Jobe Shanahan is still on the board at our pick I think we take him... I think Richmond would be stupid to overlook him as I think he's emerging as the highest rated KPP in the draft. I think this is why Essendon want to get back into the 1st round of the draft, and I hope we capitalise on this.

Hopefully Melb/Tigers select a KPP and Lindsay falls through to us - I have cooled on TT, especially with Mini saying Ginbey will be settled at half back for the time being.

That was a throw away line.

He admitted he wasnt too involved with the draft team to date.

Oh my days we better pick an actual mid with this first pick. A developing tall or player with mid potential & I’ll likely be flipping out quite nicely
A developing tall players, with midfield potential that has been injured for two years. That's what the pieman has on his board as he plays along from home.

Preferences based on never having watched anyone but reading this board, and a few mock articles, of players who might be available.

1. Lindsay - seems to have moved out of our range now sadly
2. M Reid - a classy midfield/fwd who has a slight knock for speed. Can carry a player who knows how to football (like he does) as long as not snail pace (which he doesn't appear to be), as long as get enough speed elsewhere in the team.
3. Hotton - has the talent and upside to pay off, but a big risk, not sure we can take it unless no other good options. Will probably end up at Tigers or GWS who will have the ability to take the risk

If all the three above are gone, then someone projected to be top 10 has slipped and we just take them.

Cal linking us strongly to Hotton now. “Red hot”. Didn’t think it could get much worse but if we turn pick 3 into Liam Baker and a bloke at 15 who’s coming off an ACL requiring multiple surgeries for complications then I was wrong.

Liam Baker/Matt Owies/Jack Graham are instant sugar hits

A draft pick is a non instant sugar hit as it needs time to develop so therefore cannot be instant

I respect Phil's views but also conscious the 'competitive list, no sugar hit' rhetoric is 100% club spin that it's deployed publicly and privately to members since the day of the Baker trade. IMV:

Liam Baker costing us O'Sullivan/Draper/etc = sugar hit

Matt Owies and Jack Graham for f-all = competitive list :thumbsu: (although I think we could have easily done without Owies)

I just hope the anti-sugar hit rhetoric isn't indicating us using our first pick on an injured could-be gun a la (Swift/Chesser/Hotton)

Nor trading a F1 to improve our R1 to a worse R1 than we originally had

If we trade our R1 for a likely top 5 pick next year (North), that'd be a blow to the sugar hit brigade, but overall a positive :thumbsu:

Bring it home, WCE_phil (i.e. "Just Take Reid").

If clubs don't force Brisbane to match Levi at pick 1 (understand clubs hate not having the no.1 pick on their team so Tigers wont) or pick 2 at worst then we all deserve to have Brisbane win the next 5 flags.

Hotton is purely a medical risk. If the club has had the opportunity to do proper DD on his knee and are comfortable that it's going to be ok, then his upside is undeniable if Lindsay/Reid are gone.

Exactly. I’m not at all concerned about his ability, I was posting about Travaglia and him very early in the year before he did his ACL but his recovery had been complicated. He’s had to have follow up procedures which is available publicly I would not go near him with our first pick.

Murphy Reid or Jobe Shanahan .

Good options ...

You're cherry picking.

In Geelings three flags, they had a young Joel Selwood. Then they traded in Danger who was a top 5 in the comp for a decade.

Collingwood got Daicos as FS. This guy is a generational player.

Where are we going to get these players from? We might find them elsewhere, but let's not kid ourselves, THE BEST PLACE TO FIND THEM IS AT THE TOP OF THE DRAFT. We all know this. I've seen you agree with it multiple times.

But now you're cherry picking 2 rare exceptions, but not bothering to mention all the teams who failed.

On one hand you're saying Hawks aren't all that, but here you're throwing them up as examples of success.

Do you realise you flip flop just to suit an argument?

It's quite an achievement for the club to not only drain any excitement I have for actual games of footy, now I'm also dreading the draft out of fear we're going to completely balls it up.

Please prove my fears wrong.
