And we just gift wrapped a top 3 pick.
Feel we're the dumbest club around at the moment because we're desperate to be competitive.
I sense you missed the point. Norf cannot get much by way of double top end R1 picks for 2 as the perceived view is that 2 to mid first round is so even and that mid to late first rounders are also damned hot property. So getting 12 and 14 from Blues was good business.

Side note - Giving up 14 instead of Hawks F1 for Baker was bad business

I can see the hesitancy with 6 and 10 where you're choosing you're own adventure but at 12 and 14 it feels like we're playing the wishing game that clubs ahead of us take a couple of KPFs so that the players we really need may be available to us. Not really the spot I love being in after another down year.

If we were bereft of KPF and did this trade knowing we're still likely taking Shanahan I'd be a bit more comfortable but feels like we have more of a need of players in the top 10 of this draft.

with how it stands we get lucky and we get a slider, things go as expected and we choose Lindsay or I'm walking away from this offseason fairly disappointed.

I think we'll try to get back into the draft with another pick which will either be too hard given the perceived depth or will result in us overpaying again.

We didn't even have Hawks F1 until the last monents of the trade period, so we were never gonna delay the Baker trade until after that. We were too eager.
Wasn't there also some rumour that we wanted to show Hawthorn that we didn't need them to get Baker.

Feel that it highlights the opposite tbh

Top 5 picks aren't being considered that far ahead of mid to late 1st rounders this year as a general consensus

However that does also show how much we overpaid for Baker too

Trading pick three was done to satisfy the pure insanity of a first round pick for baker.

Trade period should of resulted in
Pick 3/14/30 baker in out: 26 and barrass
Or pick 3/26 f1 hawks f2 hawks in baker out f2 wce barrass

That Baker deal was one of the stupidest deals ever made. Even Pyke more or less acknowledged that.

Should never have made the early commitment to Baker.

Up there with the Brander comments during the trade period a few years ago.
Clubs knew what happened with brander .
Got dropped for squibbing during the essendon game then instead of taking on the chin and working his way back he got his manager to put contract talks on hold because he believed he would get more offers .

Career suicide.

We were never getting anything for him .

The comments were just a parting shot for being a campaigner

Yeah, we were never gonna get much for Brander by that season.
GWS were probably the only interested party, and if we forced them into a trade we would would've just gotten the lowest pick they were willing to give up.
Should've packaged him up in a TK trade to Geelong when they were into him, but we were adamant about keeping him.

It would be good for us if North do somehow get pick 11 off Richmond

If Richmond retain 10 and 11, I suspect they take another mid/running player with one of those picks and Armstrong with the other. (Think both Saints and Melbourne are likely to overlook Armstrong)

However, if they do trade 11 to North I think they still take Armstrong as the best KPF in the draft which they need since Reiwoldt has retired and Lynch has 1-2 years left in him at best. North would then take a KPF (likely Shanahan) with pick 11 to bookend Tauru

That means another runner for us to choose from - so likely 2 of Lindsay/Reid/Allan instead of just one of that group

Now if St Kilda decide they want Armstrong, pushing Richmond to take Shanahan and North to take Whitlock AND Melbourne take Reid or Allan then the draft might look something like this :

1 - Lalor (Richmond)
2 - Tauru (North)
3 - O’Sullivan (Carlton)
4 - Draper (Adelaide)
5 - Smith (Melbourne)
6 - Smillie (Richmond)
7 - Langford (St Kilda)
8 - Armstrong (St Kilda)
9 - Allan (Melbourne)
10 - Shanahan (Richmond)
11 - Whitlock (North)
12 - Travaglia (West Coast)

The other hypothetical is Richmond keep 11 leaving the draft order before us remains unchanged and we are left with Reid as the best option still available.

North then offer us their F1 they’d put on the table to Richmond for pick 12 so they can take Shanahan. Do we do that deal - giving us another potential top 4 pick next year?

We’d probably want to know if one of Richmond (20 or 23), GWS (21) or Sydney (22) would accept the Hawthorn F1 in a trade. Coupled with the previously discussed Essendon trade which gives us 28 and 31 for 26 after swapping around F2 picks

Means just a pick from 20-23 plus 28 and 31 in this draft which is a modest hand for finishing 16th.

But a bumper draft hand next year
2x F1 - Ours and North
1x F2 - Essendon
2x F3 - Ours and Hawthorn

Based on this years ladder that’s 2,3,26,39,49

It's clear the salary cap (even with its extension) is going to accommodate Harley and Warner, and all these fringe players from elsewhere aren't even interested in WCE because their only going to get offered peanuts.

Carroll would be on peanuts at the Saints. Didn’t offer Garcia a contract by the looks of it. Dev wasn’t offered peanuts according to reports.

I wonder if we even talked to Carrol. Seems weird that we have been all about raising our floor and getting competitiion for spots this offseason but didn't persue Carrol. We lack depth in the middle and we have a bunch of list spots with SFA draft picks so its not like we couldn't accommodate him.
Maybe he was too young for us....
Either that or we can't even woo a WA delisted free agent home and he actually preferred to go to the Saints.

The way this offseason is going I won't be surprised when we offer a 30year old Clurey a list spot.

Sounded like we were ‘monitoring’ him…. From what Clark has said about the rest of the off season I reckon we will have a few training ons for possible SSP spots. I reckon that’s what we would’ve been looking at for Carroll. Does seems a weird one to let go through to the keeper while signing 27yo players who are also ready to play now
