i would be happy with Shanahan, certainly. Someone on here pointed to this before - go talls this year when everyone is frothing over the mids. I think it's a smart strategy. We have multiple firsts next draft year, plus NGAs, to rectify the midfield. Go for it, I reckon.

Part of my reluctance with talls, especially interstate ones, is they take 3-4 years to really hit their straps and by that time there is a half reasonable chance they will want to leave if from interstate (or earlier when their value is low and stings even more).

Tbf we picked up a mid a few picks after.
We find most of our best key talls mid to late in the draft or rookie draft, so no reason to use 1st round picks on talls unless they're Jed Walter.

Sometimes I wonder if I watch the same midfield as everyone else (mostly the club).

Ideally we use at least 5, possibly 6 draft/rookie draft picks :

Pick 12 - Travaglia, Lindsay, Allan, Reid in that order of preference - at least one will be there

Pick 26 - Best Mid/HBF available - Davis, Ough, Moraes, Oliver, Hannaford etc

Pick 30-50 via trade - Best KPD if available or another mid - Barrat, O’Farell, Mraz or Boxshall, Urquhart types

Pick 72 - Match Champion bid

Pick 77 - Project KPD if one not already drafted or best running player available. This pick will be in the 60’s and there almost certainly will be someone worthwhile still on the board Hopefully someone like Artemis, Bell, Dennis or Hayes is here

RD pick 3 - I doubt it happens but Knobel here makes some sense. Alternatively best available or pass

If we use our rookie pick it leaves just one spot open, presumably Burgiel provided he earns it

Then one other SSP acquisition if we don’t use that rookie pick

Sheed retiring would open another spot to be filled via a SSP selection should that happen

WEST Coast young gun Harley Reid has suffered a concussion in the first week of pre-season training.

The Eagles confirmed on Thursday that Reid, the No.1 pick in the 2023 Telstra AFL Draft, had entered concussion protocols after sustaining a head knock at training on Wednesday.

I agree about not taking a KPP with our first pick

I disagree with the rationale. Brendan Fevola was the last Coleman medallist truly drafted after the first round. No Coleman medallists have been truly drafted this century after R1

KPDs are a different story but you only listed KPF examples

It's not because of the likelihood of a bust, it's because we don't need a 5th talented KPF and yes, history says KPDs can be found later in the draft

This reminds me a bit of when we were linked to Busslinger and Jefferson heavily in 2022 with our second (split) first round pick. The pre-emptive melts were fierce.

However, Reid has reassured clubs outside Victoria he is keen to play anywhere.



“I am pretty lucky. I have family and friends that support me and know what journey I am on, so they are all in my corner to do what it takes and I’ve had those conversations with clubs,” Reid said.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to go wherever it takes, that club is obviously putting their time and resources to pick me, so we’ll do whatever it takes to make it work out and get the best out of myself to help them succeed.”

Another Reid in the midfield is ok by me. Now that it is 3 years and our host family program, get Noah to mentor him in the “us young boys” club and back us in. Murphy Reid reminds me of Phil Kelly. Not sure Mini would like his defensive running

I suspect Olli Hotton being cut from Saints list may be enough to get Taj accepting life away from Melbourne

I'm starting to come to terms with the Baker trade not being the reason why we fold the club.

While still a terrible not only because of what we traded but because of Clarke's genius negotiating skills of committing to Baker, agreeing to Baker's demands that we compensate Richmond fairly and then publicly announcing that we'd give Richmond a high pick.

But short of a disaster draft order, where only mids are selected ahead of us, it seems like whoever slides down to our pick will meet a list need. And even then, if a Tauru or Armstrong are inexplicably available at our pick, we'd be able to sell our pick for a small fortune I imagine.
