If there's a negative in this draft, it's why claiming Grego cost us our 3rd round pick instead of Hawthorn's.
Brisbane just wanted to bank a pick, I can't see why Hawthorn's one wasn't enough.

Our future 3rd (pick 39 on current ladder) for pick 46 from Brisbane

compared to

Saints future 2nd (pick 25 on current ladder) for pick 45 and future 4th (pick 62) from Essendon

i'd say we did very well

Because that was Clarke’s contribution lmao. Massey is responsible for the drafting. Clarke wet the bed again in a trade.
Did Clarke do something to you that we can't talk about?

All these decisions are made by this team. Massey reports to Clarke.

To top off the draft, I'm very happy about getting Champion for free.
Surprised he had no bid. Perhaps didn't interview well?
He's an excitement machine. I love his manic style of footy. Will suit McQualter's game style well.
He was electric in the game below.

21 disposals
10 marks
3 goals
2 brawls started 😂

No he doesn't.

What a refreshing change, it’s been forever since we’ve universally hailed a draft this successful, and to do it with the hand we started last night with, is nothing short of remarkable.

How many times has there been a large portion of us listing similar players as ones we wanted to take at certain parts of the draft, only for the club to go in another direction and leave us all perplexed as to the thought process and strategy behind the decisions?

This time around, the names Shanahan, Gross and Davis were some of the most mentioned as players we should be looking at early on Day 2. To land all 3, while only having to give up an F3 (and manufacturing another pick last night basically for free), is nothing short of sensational. Sure, none of us really knew much of Grego, but it feels a bit like a Noah Long or Harvey Johnston selection which may not end up being a bad thing.

Shanahan had to be the pick at 30, the value there is insane (and as has been mentioned, we’d likely have used 14 on him if we’d kept it instead of using it to acquire Baker). The versatility is huge, if he works out as a KPF then wonderful, but I think we see him as a Gov type, that could be an amazing KPD in time. Cards fell our way there, but that’s happened before and we’ve still gone in another direction. This time, we nailed it.

Gross and Davis were such great picks at the spots we took them, and add nicely to what we’re building as contributors in the midfield and forward of the ball. Sure, we missed out on Boxshall, but you can’t win them all and we should still be elated with the value of both those picks.

Add all that to picking Bo last night, and I think there is reason for us all to be very optimistic about 2025 and beyond!

And the bedwetters will still complain.
We have salvaged the draft with very little capital.
Better still we have a lot of picks to bolster our list next year.
We also replaced a lot of driftwood.

The Eagles can be considered one of the biggest winners of the draft after landing top West Australian talent Bo Allan. The Peel Thunder product had top-10 interest this year but slid all the way down to the Eagles at Pick 16. West Coast managed to secure Pick 45 as well as a result of sliding back an extra selection, with the Power trading up to land Joe Berry instead. Bendigo Pioneers forward Jobe Shanahan was one of the biggest sliders of the draft and was a massive steal at Pick 30, while the Eagles continued their stellar draft by snagging All-Australian midfielder Tom Gross at Pick 46. Western Jets on-baller Lucca Grego also gets his chance, while local product Hamish Davis was a bargain at Pick 65, too. One of the biggest winners, if not the biggest winner, of the draft.

Grade: A+

Looks like we drafted Grego with the small lockdown defender role in mind. Would then release Hough for a different role. Hopefully Mid/Wing.

I think we end up having another train on spot as I think Sheed is done. Even if he’s not I just can’t see him fitting into the new game plan at all.

No he doesn't.
So they both report directly to Bell? That makes no sense and has never been our structure.

EDIT - that goes back to the old Vozzo structure but Clarke was brought in to run the whole recruitment/contracts space so still struggling with this.

Should I be as excited that Shanahan slid to our second the same way I was excited that Darling slid to our second all those years ago?

Yes yes you should. We had him at 12 on the draft board and he’s who we were trying to trade back in for on Night 1. We ended up getting him anyway & saved all the draft capital that would have cost! Seems no one wanting to trade out actually worked out well.

Finally putting some pressure on Cole’s spot is what I’m excited for

So in the end, had we not traded out 14 for Baker, we'd have likely taken Shanahan with it anyway?

So ultimately, the result is the same as it would have been had we traded our second round pick for Baker, and split 3 for 12 and 14?

Yeah, I think we can all collectively stop hyperventilating over trade week.

Here is the missing link.

Thats who he reports too.
Of course that doesn't mean that he doesn't communicate strongly with Bell ...... who does a great job as he is the go between.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good 😉

I suspect this is a draft where the differences between the top and bottom of the draft are a lot less than normal, so the difference between 14 and 28 (or whatever our second round started as) probably weren't as great as normal. So a bit less pure luck, a bit more calculated gamble.

(Probably didn't expect to get Shanahan that low, but probably expected there to be good pickings still there)

Can't argue with it being lucky though.

Of course, but all it took was Richmond or the Dogs accepting an offer from Essendon or Geelong with the first 2 picks of today, and we’re likely not celebrating Shanahan being an Eagle, and on top of that, we tried to part with future draft capital to get Shanahan last night, which we’ve now managed to hold onto, and got him anyway. So a bit of luck there I reckon. Stoked he’s on board though, looks a gem!

Seeing as Brisbane shipped out the 2 picks immediately after 46 I'd say they had other offers.

I don't disagree with the strategy of taking the best available with every pick as a general rule. The only downside is that with the area of our list that is most bereft, i.e. the midfield, we didn't really add anything to that with this draft. We might need to modify the "best available" approach with the next draft and really focus on finding some midfield candidates.
