The 5 greatest over hyped/spuds.

1. Gary Shaw
2. Dale Woodhall
3. Butch Edwardes
4. Geoff Hayward
5. Billy Morrison.

Great thread and so hard to pick. I had the pleasure of seeing the great 1990 team but think the 2010 team were just as good.

1. Daics has to be rated number 1. One of the best players I've ever seen.
2. Buckley. Just a standout kick.
3. Swan. He has been amazing for a long time.
4. Brown.
5. T Shaw. People forget how good he was for a very long time. Premiership captain and Norm Smith backs this up.

So many apologies... Pendles, Clement, Millane, Francis, Morwood, Moore

What about our top 5 weirdest names? In no particular order:

Phonse Kyne
Tarkyn Lockyer
Sharrod Wellingham
Steele Sidebottom
Thorold Merrett

With special mentions to:
Rene Kink
Tyson Goldsack

daicos
buckley
dale thomas
dane swan
heath sheppard for his one game wonder 8 goal haul or whatever it was re.

dale thomas behind daics id put for his 2010 and 2011 season in particular. at his best thomas was off the chart more so than pendles or swan. he was from outer space at best. and ill never forget his efforts in the first gf in 2010 when he busted his gut to keep us in it.. basically carried the entire team on his shoulders. i dont think ive seen a better player in the last 20 odd yrs at collingwood as far as how good they are at their peak.

might be an unpopular choice but if you take a min to think back and reminisce it would be a stuggle to find someone as good as him at his best. at least thats how i think

I loved him because he was tough and hard.

He was as tough and hard as they come. Like a rugged Gavin Brown and Tony Shaw rolled into one. Inspirational. Never forget when he broke his arm. He hardly even flinched.

Interesting thread......

Nathan Buckley - The standout Collingwood player I have seen, for his ability to completely turn games by himself, and for his amazing capacity to carry the Pies in that 1994-2002 era when some of the pies sides were ordinary (The game where he played on and nullified Carey - at his peak - was about the most i transformational an individual performance I have ever seen), and a large part of me still feels regret he didnt get to play in a winning GF side.

Dane Swan - We have had ten years of Swan - often under rated still I reckon - shaping games though his ability to just accumulate possessions. Even at the tail end of his career (and what a get down circa 50 in the Draft) he is still capable of turning games by himself, and he has been a mainstay of a Collingwood premiership delivering era.

Gavin Brown - I reckon people forget just how courageous Brown was. A fearless and fairly slight wingman who ended up in the crash/bash key forward role for a long period. For mine he was the epitome of the mindset that there was nothing he would not do for the club.

Peter Daicos - 250 mind altering games (or some of them were). As a younger guy I sort of thought that if I was determined enough and if I had been committed enough I could have done what league footballer did. But I never thought I could do what Daicos did. Just a hip wiggle would put entire sides off balance (not to mention some very good players tasked with stopping him). The goal against the Weagles i the 1990 qualifying final I recall for the sense that a split second had a very large crowd wondering 'did that guy just do what we think he did?' - it was just one of an amazing show reel of freak goals.

Scot Pendlebury - If Daicos had the ability to throw teams and players of balance then Pendlebury has the ability to make it appear that everyone is just standing still waiting for him to do what he wants with the ball - the 'Time Lord' as Jake Niall called him. Has a Norm Smith and a Premiership still reinvents himself (the move to quarter back in late season this year was a good example) in the way great players do. I hope he gets the chance to lead the Pies deep into September next year, and that he gets another premiers medallion.

1 Peter Daicos. The greatest small forward of all time.
2 Len Thompson. How this guy wasn't first ruck in the afl team of the century I'll never know.
3 Nathan Buckley. You all saw it.
4 Darren Millane. Unbeatable.
5 can't separate Dane Swan/Mark Wiiliams.

Been watching games mostly on tv from the early to mid '90s and going to games regularly since '06

1. Daicos - not many can lay claim to being an innovator or changing the game. From checksides, bananas and dribbles Daicos really changed goal kicking. Was watching highlights a while back and noticed on occasion he would also line up on goal side on, which I previously thought was a more modern phenomenon.

2. Buckley - such a pity we couldn't put a great team around him

3. Swan - old school footballer, doesn't always look pretty, but dominates. One of my all time favourites, his breakout coincided with my second stage of supporting footy

4. Brown - rightly remembered for his courage, which probably shorten his career, but was a star in his own right and could play anywhere

5. Saverio Rocca/Anthony Rocca - different eras, different roles, which makes it hard to split their talent. Both big dominating players.

Pendlebury by all rights is top 5, I just don't feel right putting players in these lists when they still have a significant amount of footy ahead. Others worth mentioning Clement, Paul Williams, Prestigiacomo, Licuria

And who were our biggest top 5 busts ie came with past glory or fanfare, meant to be stars but didnt really catch on for us

Allan Edwards
Barry Mitchell
Gerard Healy (ok his wrist was done)
Adrian McAdam
Nathan Freeman

Shane Woewodin, Carl Steinfort, Billy Morrison

Devestated by injury or never got the best out of there natural talent.
Ron Mckeon
Lee Walker
Phil Carmen on his day as good as Brereton and Carey.
Tom Davidson, Sean Rusling looked good but couldn't get a run at it. Blake Caracella was handy for us before hurting his neck, Tom Hunter also suffered a neck injury. Danny Roach I never saw play, but he must have had some talent to go at pick 7.
