Marchbank replaces Jones when he hangs up the boots.

Intercept defender for intercept defender.
It makes sense but there’s a few years to go for Jonsey.

For mine, there are a number of players on the list who are in a holding pattern and should be preparing for next season. It’s a shorter season. No VFL. I think that means less opportunities for the injured players and the younger players.

I don’t want to open up a Pandora’s Box but how difficult will it be to make list decisions at the end of the season. The AFL will probably force those changes but it’s harsh on the guys who get moved on.

Throw him on a wing, very difficult for opposition to match up on him.

True - but that works the other way too.
While Marchy is an excellent mark and has good agility for a KPB, I feel he would be found out for speed and endurance against the majority of wingmen in the league.
Also, while he is an OK kick I’m not sure he’s the one we want delivering into the F50.
Happy to be proven wrong though, as ideally I’d love to have him in the 22.
I honestly think he and Plowman are competing for the same role in the backline.

If he will get found out for speed on the wing, there is no way he can play the Plowman role. Small forwards such as Charlie Cameron are not slow.

Agree, but chasing a small forward in the confines of the 50m arc is a little different than running up and down the wing all game.
I don’t think he’s a great matchup for a Charlie Cameron type - but not sure Plowman is either to be honest.
I know Plowman cops a lot of flak and his supporters will mention his top 3 finish in the B&F. I like him as a player and like him in the side - I just think he has been miscast in matchups with small forwards. I like him against the mid forwards (Greene, De Goey, Ratner, etc), but think he gets found out for pace a bit often.
We (and I include myself here) keep saying how badly we need small forwards - I think an equally pressing need is a dependable lockdown small defender.

Part of the problem is that he's not expected to solely play on smalls, and it's not reasonable to keep a specialist small defender who can only play on small forwards.

There's also the trend comp wide over the last few years towards small forwards that are as capable in the air as they are on the ground (Elliot, Betts, Cameron, Papley) and mid sized players who are too fast for talls but too strong and tall for smalls (Gowers, Townsend, Raynor, Caddy). You could have a player like Aaron Joseph on the list who is capable of blanketing single types, but then you're left stranded when trying to cover a different player type.

Plowman can sit on each of these players. Some will get a hold of him some of the time, some won't. Either we fill up 10 spots on a 45 person list on stoppers - which is not an adequate use of those list positions - or we can use Plow as a bandaid which he's actually not bad as.

The fact that he's an imperfect matchup is a sign of list stress and priorities elsewhere.

I bought the Big V State of Origin DVD box set yesterday (it was at half price) and I watched the 1989 game between the Vics and South Australia and wow, the Vics thumped the Croweaters, but my highlight waa Sticks..They would have lost by 150 points plus if if wasn't for Kernahan, he was phenomenal.

Easy to forget these days just how brilliant a player Kernahan was, esp at his peak. And he always stayed loyal to The Navy Blue.

Had the pleasure of talking to Sticks and shaking his hand about 15 years ago, such a very nice and friendly chap.

I know his reign as President/Chairman has left a sour taste in some fans mouths, but I will never say a bad word about him.

If you talk about a player who defined what it was to be Carlton/Bound in Blue, I would be hard pressed to think of anyone more fitting that Stephen Kernahan.

He is a legend in every sense of the word !

Lol i love Ed.

His energetic personality and well-known work-rate are some intangible benefits he brings to the team. Is 30 now and will probably get replaced soon enough, though watching him vs Geelong he's still an incredibly valuable member to our team...attends almost every centre bounce and is our go-to to clamp the oppositions best mid while still making useful offensive contributions (like his perfect kick I50 to Casboult).
His role is one I can't see an obvious replacement for on our list, we don't have anyone who jumps out as having that elite endurance and mental toughness to play that shut down role and still average that 20-25 touches a game.

Small sample size I know but so far this year he is way down on tackles, contested possessions, total disposals and clearances but is up on metres gained, score involvements and inside 50's - I haven't noticed a change in role but perhaps simply being the second touch player at the clearance rather than the first more often? SOmething to keep an eye on as the season unfolds.

I think JSOS has potential there, if he continues to develop his tank. Doubt he gets close to Ed-endurance, but not many in the comp have that.

Was thinking maybe Setters. Maybe not the exact same role, but might be the longer term replacement in the centre square.

MAybe, but doesn't "feel" like he has the same hard edge Ed does. I would like to get a look at him in the square more to let him use his clearance talents.

Probably the most likely but without that tank he will be much more limited than Ed in which opponents he could go to (one of Ed's best attributes is he can go with an inside player as well as he can go with an outside player) - but conversely he would over a bit more polish offensively.

As others have noted, SOS has had some success in this role, and Setters can certainly play as a defensively minded midfielder.

I reckon Philp could also be introduced to the midfield rotations in that kind of role also. Has the discipline and the endurance.

We got the Swanettes at the G in round 6. Gil Mac you beauty. We have a delightful draw (so far)

We should aim to go at least 2-1 in our next 3 games
Problem is does this mean we will have lots of interstate travel mid-late season...

We beat the Dopers, we may damn well have a legit shot at finals, Stains and Swannies at the G in the next 2 weeks.

The AFL and Gil have been unusually kind to us (so far) in this COVID19 fixture rescheduling, we have to take advantage of it, starting by belting the Tulla Tossers on Saturday

Bank home games early (in this abbreviated season) and the rest can take care of itself.

In a 17 game season, we have a great opportunity to build a winning culture and mindset amongst our boys given our generous fixture in the next three weeks.

I am excited

Yeah we need to bank early wins. The next 3 games are massive for us. I suspect we end up part of the rolling WA hub later in the year given we’ve played neither WA side. It’s always tough to win over there and generally the hub teams have struggled so far this year.

And they then aren’t sending us to WA. We stay in Melbourne. What happens with Port and Adelaide. They won’t let us leave as we will need to quarantine. They won’t let either leave and come back. So it’s going to continue to be Vic-centric.

I can see us going down that path with Philp but not as a traditional run with player. We’ll be the ones trying to break the tag!
