Yes on-field leaders need to stand up to call the play there but it also depends what they've been given to work with. Down by a goal with 30 seconds to go seems like a game scenario where you'd want the players to have a few cards up their sleeves.
Yeah. I heard Conor McDonald on the Sunday footy Show saying the Hawks last year were training fitness and strength basically into the season starting where as this year they wanted to keep building so they started training game scenarios immediately when they got back.

What have we been doing?

Reconnecting and finding love for each other.

Yeah, hes a *ing busy body doing that shit. Choco should have told him to * off. Sign of a coach under pressure wanting to be everywhere.
How the **** is he supposed to tell everyone he loves them from the coaches box you idiot

He needs to stop hogging the bloody pen and let others contribute to the story.

Would think coaching from the boundary is something you do with a strong assistant coaching group in the box all on the same page regarding the style of play. Not sure we have that with two new assistants this year? Goody is an idiot.
Goody has coached from the bench in the past because he's not a tactical coach and has had assistants that have been in charge of that area previously. We don't seem to have a tactic specialist this year, which is a massive watch for us given every man and his dog could see it's a huge need.

What I also remember from Sunday, us chucking Fritsch back as an extra man in D50 for the last minute and a bit of the second quarter when we were down. Coward shit. Protect the deficit!

This felt very reactive in 2nd. I didn't like it at all. It was a see-sawing game but deficit never really blew out either way.

Fritsch not getting into the game but not sure having him behind the ball is that useful.

Probably the worst person to play loose in defence too.

Yeah if a team has a run on and has kicked the last 4 goals in 3 minutes or something I get it. But **** me, its little wonder we choke late when we have instructions of such a negative mindset throughout the game. Back your guys in to kick a goal late instead of worrying about the Giants scoring. You'd have thought the end of the third quarter in the grand final would have taught Goody something.

I know us conceding scores in redtime is a bit of a meme but iirc it was largely untrue last year? Interesting if this is GWS superior fitness or even having an extra game under their belt or if we've just gotten worse in that area.

Giants also destroyed Collingwood at the end of quarters last week.

Under Goodwin we've always played better footy rope-a-doping and letting the other team take the lead with effort/whatever early in the game/quarters then over-running them.

I think it's a sign of a good team.

So many games last year showed that it's easier than ever to run a team down and protecting a lead with 6/6/6 can be really challenging. In 2021 we came from behind in a lot of games to win. 2022 we got run down a lot and we sucked.

The Pies in 2023 were famous for running teams down and even Brisbane last year ran down GWS in the Semi and Cats in the Prelim.

Maybe just maybe having no forwards who can run through the middle and playing the same 4 mids in the middle almost all game makes us run out of energy before other teams who flip it around

What you're saying makes sense but it never really felt like we were gassed. Giants have been banging on about how fit they are this year after an embarrassing finals series.

We were killed on transition as well, so fitness would probably be part of it, but our crowded structure likely doesn't help much too. We're also a poorly skilled team trying to play a precision kicking game in an era of fast, attacking, turnover footy. Bit of work to do. Interested to see if it pans out we did something different due to the conditions, or that's us for the year.

I've just never been a big believer that one teams program can be that far infront of another's. There's so much crossing of staff and players they're all probably doing about the same thing for fitness.
I think it's not likely that we grind ourself into the ground with a lack of rotation.

Think there are plenty of bad clubs that are often bad because their programs aren't demanding enough. But we've generally prided ourselves on our fitness so I do agree the margins between us and the Giants probably aren't massive. But yeah I do agree we rely too much on having Trac, Viney and Oliver in there all the time. Our recruiting would suggest we are trying to fix that with guys like Langford but it obviously isn't reflected in the games yet.

We've always been killed out the back under Goodwin, that's the achilles heel of a high forward press. I'm not sure about the gameplan, we're not a slow and stodgy as we have been in the past going long down the line but we're still hugging the boundary-line and risk-averse, forwardline is still a dogs breakfast. Goodwin made a big show on 360 of saying he wanted us to play entertaining footy and we'd have some teething issues early in the year so we'll see but we've been burned before on promises of change.

Marks - Dees 84, GWS 56 (Contested Dees 7, GWS 5)
Uncontested possessions - Dees 235, GWS 218
Disposals per score - Dees 21, GWS 16

Makes me think we might be swapping one slow and stodgy for another one if we stay so risk averse.
