Found the parallels between Buddy and Brereton quite interesting.
Both number 23, multiple premiships, shit loads of goals and matches won off their own boot.
Brereton: 189 games in brown and gold before moving to Sydney
Franklin: 182 games in brown and gold before moving to Sydney
(Yes, the cirumstances of their departure were incredibly different).
I don't begrudge Buddy going to Sydney. He was offered a huge pay increase and a move to the city where his girlfriend lives. People forget the second half of that equation, but it's huge for many people. Happy wife, happy life and all that.
The thing about Hawthorn in recent times, JK a notable exception, players that leave our club just don't thrive. Buddy has a long time to prove himself and kick huge bags of goals (I do expect he'll land 70-80 of them this year) but when you consider recent departees: Clint Young, Brent Renouf, Jordan Lisle, (okay, those two were fringe), Mark Williams, Campbell Brown, Steve Gilham - nobody is setting the world on fire. Xav Ellis and Shane Savage are ones I'll watch closely, but in general terms players and their careers are much better off at Hawthorn.
I'm always fascinated to see how ex-hawks go at other clubs, but it's not great reading for those who think they're going to pick up a rough diamond.
