Catered with horses doovers and cocktails. Drinks waiters and a private bar.
$30 (+ $6 booking charge) upgrade for members only (so on top of your membership).

The socialist in me finds it pretty distasteful.
General admission looked full tonight, and they have wiped out 2 whole sections of GA for this wank fest.
Now, I have no problem with having nice areas for the 'nice people' to la de da, it's good for revenue, but to knock out good GA seats, just doesn't seem fair. Behind the goals at every other ground is for cheer squads, but we've essentially told all our visitors to piss of over to the side a bit.

Apparently this is where the pool goes for the cricket, so I have a theory. When they ripped the pool out, maybe they found that they had misplaced the seats, so stuck down some fake lawn and patio chairs instead. The area would now hold about a third of spectators that would normally fit there.
Wanky.

Edit: Wanky, and not the least bit footbally. By a VIP suite or corp box, ya bums.

People were going up to the booths to buy GA tickets and getting turned away as well. Seems bizarre that we don't have some extra GA allocation for the ground when it's half empty

Laughable considering we had 17.5K in a 38K capacity ground. So less than half full. Just get them in and stick them somewhere else.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
People who front up to the tix window are more likely to pay the extra for a seat than walk away. Not very fair when they've given GA space to hipsters and yuppies.
It sort of mirrors urban development. One minute West End is a cultural melting pot of students and hippies, until yuppies decide that's cool and trendy, next minute there's a Jimmy Rod's sculpting their chin hair.
Someone noticed that the real football is at ground level, but let's not mingle with the smelly poor folk. Instead, let's acquire some of their prime real estate.

In before someone from sections 65 through 69 agrees we do smell.

Skoob you are very out of touch. I think it's a great initiative by the club to get more young people going. I'll probably make a night of it during the season at some point.

West End is still full of hippies dunno when the last time you went and hung around there was!

Who gets to go in there?........we saw it last night briefly on tv, didn't look like footy types to us.

Supposedly members only. 30 dollars extra per game. I think they let a bunch of “influencers” (cringe) in there last night though to “build the brand” (ugh).

Good to see the club trying out some new ideas though. The Block Party seemed pretty successful too.

For non members, $60 a ticket. The rest was covered at the end of the last Roar Deal podcast. Heineken on tap, cocktails, etc.

This verander thing as far as I can see is a great idea, but to have it behind the goals are they serious.
Maybe behind the interchange benches on the top of the lower level.
The cricket wouldn,t put the pool at either end of the wicket would they, thats why they put it at the school end..
To have less GA tickets aval. because of this is mindboggling, go to the broncos as a rock up on the day and youd get seating a fair bit cheaper than the Gabba.
Whos going to hand over a fifty, obviously not many.

Well the sightscreens might dampen the viewing experience for the cricket...

The verandah last night was invite only and mostly player partners and aflw players, triple m comp winners as well as a bunch of Instagrammers of significant following numbers. Will be open to buy next week.

Always amusing to see people getting upset over the club trying to make the best of a forced situation. There was no option to make it back into seating. With no test next year the Gabba were not going to spend the money to put the seats back in (yes there's a bit more to it than throwing a few chairs in) given they will be putting the pool back in at the start of the cricket season. The club took that and turned it into something to appeal to a different range of people in order to attract a different target market and good on them for coming up with something new.

As for the block party it only took iu about 20 mins to get some food. But then again I was pretty sensible and turned up 1 ½ hours pre game and didn't choose the one place that had a 30 metre lineup to order. Went pretty well tbh with plenty of options imo. Was pretty standard sort of worst for these sorts of things. I can see if you hadn't been to a food truck event how you could get caught out though. You expect to wait at them, they're serving a couple hundred meals out of a truck, it's going to take a bit

The Verandah has been a thing for weeks, and that is the first time I've seen any explanation. Not sure what conclusion you expect people to come to, without that background, or why it shouldn't be questioned, but glad you found some smug amusement. ;)
Never had an issue with the concept, just where it was plonked, and those put out by it (not me, BTW).

As I said earlier... **** opposition cheer squads. We owe them nothing. Can't wave flags and pom poms in our players's sightlines on set shots now :D

That's fair enough, but they will still come and take up seats in GA. Whichever way it's spun, there are fewer seats at that level, whoever's to blame (or whatever circumstance dictates).
Viva La Verandah.

Ahhh, that'd be why it looked awkward. Bunch of people frocked up way too much for a footy game, and zero supporter wear.

Also interesting that it's entirely Heineken branded, I thought we made a big deal about XXXX being a sponsor.

Lion (owner of XXXX) owns the licence to sell Heineken in Australia. Lion has the pourage rights for the ground now. I believe all the beer sold there is from Lion.

Lion (Nathan) own/manage both xxxx and Heineken.

Ah true, I was just thinking more from a brand association point of view, they made a song and dance about how it was an iconic QLD branding supporting a QLD sporting team etc.

Not that I'm complaining about having a wider range of beer at the game. :)

Hi Skoob,

We have to try new things to appeal to new demographics and attract new audiences to our games.

The Verandah is a cool new space our marketing and match day team worked really hard on over the offseason. Yes it doesn't appeal to the die hard footy fans, but that's not the point of it.

Let's face it, it's been a pretty hard sell getting people to games over the past few seasons when the results have been poor.

Part of the appeal of The Verandah is how close to the action it is and the boutique food and drinks available.

Saturday was an invite-only launch event for The Verandah. Going forward members and the general public can purchase tickets to access this area: www.lions.com.au/theverandah

If you are interested in trying out The Verandah one match this season, please email theverandah@lions.com.au and we will sort you out with a couple of tickets for free.

Cheers,

Thanks L_I, absolutely appreciate the work of the club and the idea behind it. Agree wholeheartedly that fresh approaches need to be made. My whole angle was where it was situated, and at whose expense (GA ticket buyers). I have since been told that the seats were never going to be replaced and that this has been used to fill the space, as opposed to the seats making way. If that is the case, then I don't have any issue with it.

As a matter of interest, how many are admitted to the area for games, and how many would fit there in the previous seating arrangement?

I honestly appreciate the offer of free tix to try the area, but respectfully decline. I've sat in the same GA seats (at the opposite end) for 5 years, and love the possie we've got.
Also appreciate you addressing it here. :thumbsu:

PS. Watch out for imposter emails asking for tickets, Cousin Jed is a dead give away as he can't help signing off with a photo of a sunset or golf course.:moustache:
