Hi all, i was just having a think about what would geelong do when ottens is ready to come back and play. Will we keep Mummy in the side or Blake, maybe we can keep all 3.

Im starting to really like the way Mummy plays and would rather keep him in the side and put Blake in the 2s. Maybe its time to trade Blake. Would do you guys think?

Here we go,this thread will cause some furious debate i expect. There is no room for all 3 in the same side. Blake would still be the number 2 ruckmen behind Ottens at the moment,but the Mummy has definitely taken some giant steps forward in the last few weeks.If he continues to improve this way it could make it tricky for the selectors further down the track. Will be interesting to see,because it appears Mumford has a bigger upside than Blake. I expect he will challenge for Blakes position,but that may not be until 2010,barring injury or a form drop from Blake this year.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

Mummy is better around the ground the Blake, however Blake is better in the ruck.

IMO, its a flip of the coin, yet the selection committee will go with Blake as he is proven.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

Blake's been really, really good in the absence of Otto. Some nice link-up play yesterday and a great pass that hit Stokesy on the chest, not to mention his great efforts in the ruck.

Mumford looks very promising and he should definitely be elevated to the senior list next year, but it's still Otto/Blake as the preferred combo right now. The good thing is knowing that we've got the depth there, just in case we lose Otto again or Blake goes down...

No need to take the thread any further have to agree with you 100% :)

Thats it for me too. Ottens and Blake (assuming both fit and no serious loss of form or hunger). Mumford still has to complete his apprenticeship (when Ottens or Blake are injured). He will be a great replacement when needed and will be cherry ripe when Ottens moves on.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

Mumford is a great prospect, but Blake has to be the second choice ruckman.
i think blake is possibly the most improved player in the afl, he is just now starting to mature.has to be in the top 10 as far as rucks go if not yet it wont be long

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

Its great to know that Mummy will be putting pressure on both Blake and Ottens to perform :)

We have a competent 3rd ruckman who can do a job.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

Mumford - Not bad for a boy from Boort! Love the guy.

I'm sure he would give you a backhand to the scone for calling him Mummy.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

Indeed he is.

I would be happy to see all 3 in the team. But Ottens/Blake it is. However, if they dropped Blake I would be just as happy to see Mumford as the 2nd ruck with Ottens.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

. Maybe its time to trade Blake.

Why would we trade depth? Is there some prize recruit you want instead of Blake?

What happens in a couple of years when ottens has gone. Does mumford ruck on his own? Or are you suggesting that West should stay and be #2?

I can't see any of that being sensible.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

I think Blake is still our 2nd ruckman behind Ottens, but when big Brad comes back, I'd like to see us give Blake a week or two rest, and have Ottens and Mumford as a tandem in the ruck. Freshen Blakey up for the finals, and give Mumford a reward for his efforts of late.

We now have three genuine options to go in the ruck, and West is more than serviceable as a 4th option. Just another headache for the selectors going forward.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

I think another question to ponder is whether West will be traded (or snared by the Gold Coast) this off-season, or if Dawson Simpson will still be on our list, as Mumford will definitely be promoted it seems.

Ottens is only 27!!!

If Geelong decided they wanted Mummy as 2nd choice then i reckon we wont have a choice about Blake, i think he would leave after what happened in 2007 grand final.

I know there is alot of people that like Blake, but i would rather Mummy in the side. Forget the tap outs, yes Blake is better, and the Mummy has alot to learn. Whats with the tackles Mummy is awesome, Have a good look at Dean Cox he takes marks, tackles, all over the ground, i cant see Blake doing that as good as Mummy.

Anyway GO CATS

Ottens is 29.
30 in January!!

I know what you are saying, but mumford can get elevated and just hang in there. I'm not a big Blake fan, I just see a semi one dimensional tap ruckman as being just as important to the fabric of the side as a versatile one.

I wouldn't particularly like 2 tap ruckmen.
Nor would I like 2 versatile / break even ruckmen.

Why trade someone for the sake of it? You can't just get them back if you realise you screwed up.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

Why cant we keep the Blake/Mummy tandem in the ruck and ease ottens in for the 1st month at full forward...If a game comes and we start to get completely smacked in the ruck (sandilands) then move otto in the ruck and drop one for a week..

I would love the dimension A 3 tall forward line would have. And from what Ive seen since the Ottens injury, our ruck duo has been more than handy against all opponents, so leaving Otto in the forward line and only have him ruck in the forward 50 wouldnt necessarily hurt us in the ruck over the ground if the two youngsters keep playing well for us.

Imagine this for our forward line..

Johnson-Mooney-Chapman
Stokes-Ottens-Hawkins

That would stretch every back line in the league

Summing up, I would love Geelong to trial the 3 talls in the line up for a few weeks.

Re: Blake, Mummy or Ottens

Here are my thoughts on it.

First number is what I rate them out of 10 a couple of years ago. Second number is how I rate them right now (assuming Otto is fully fit). Third number is where I reckon they will be in 2 - 3 years.

Ottens 9.0 -> 8.5 -> 8.0
Blake 6.0 -> 7.5 -> 8.0
Mumford 4.0 -> 7.0 -> 8.5

We should definately try and keep both Blake and Mumford so they can be our ruck combination when Ottens gives it away.

I reckon from that there is little improvement in Blake but a fair bit of upside in Mumford. Both will be good players who we need to keep.
