Opinion The I Was Wrong thread- Where Tom Atkins posts go to die

I just miss the calls on Guthrie that he was too slow. Ah the good old days.
Although I don't think he's overly speedy, he seems to have one of the quicker first ten metres.

Level 1 - Hair shirt and self flogging level of wrongness -

"Giving Gore up for Danger as well as the 1st round pick was stupid" (I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy)

McCathy - i said he looked slow, was a poor kick and didn't appear to have any standout strength. (What excuse did Richard Nixon use... or, for that matter, Ricky Nixon?)

Jansen - whilst I didn't say that he would be a star or even that he shouldn't have been released I was miffed that they didn't give him some games to check him out. Said that he was a better bet than Kersten. Well, if he didn't even get much time in NAB and not even mentioned as potential for Lions depleted side then, then definitely gold plated spud status.

(Historic confessions in this category - 2006 Ling " too slow and no standout talent"' 2010 Hawkins "too awkward, soft and unco", 2014 releasing T.Hunt was a " massive mistake")

Level 2 -Red faced level of wrongness -
As a big Walker fan, thought they were mad to let him go and keep Kersten. This was partly based on a view of Kersten and Walker's resilence compared to Stanley, Vardy etc. Walker certainly hasn't s done much for the Lions and has a "depth " player look about him. Kersten is stating to look like he belongs.

Level 3 - Slightly embarrassed, but (depending on injuries) could still be redeemed

Miffed that only pick 21 was obtained for Bundy and that was gifted to the saints for the injury prone Stanley. Turned to anger when Stanley got injured again last year and Goddard (I.e. Pick 21) played very well against the Cats. If Stanley keeps on the park for most of the next 3 seasons and gradually improves then I will promote the level of humiliation.

I wouldn't be expecting players to break away and run more than 10 metres very often. He looks quick to me this year.

I'm not sure how to put this.

He is quick.
Maybe call it quick minded. His instinct is to take off. Not just because he's got space. It's the first instinct.

Danger is the same. Difference is, danger is super quick.

Guthrie has some explosive speed as you said, he also has a very good side step and fend off, that can give him space and make him look quicker than he is.
His side step at times reminds me of Couchy.

This is a fun thread! I for one thought Marty McKinnon would be a good pick-up given how well he played against Geelong when he was a Crow. But it may have been because every Crow played well against Geelong at Football Park, a venue that we sucked at overall.

Thought after 1997 we'd continue to be a force, after having what i thought was some younger players like Bizzell, Kilpatrick, Sholl, Sanderson, King, A.Houlihan and others, but we fell away badly in '98 and '99.

Was wrong with my thoughts on Ling in '06, but he went from a sideways ball gatherer to a magnificent tagger and ball-getter. I was also worried with what i called Collingwood's 'Runball' of 2010, thinking that their high-altitude training would mean athletes would triumph over talent, and our older legs would be no hope. 2011 was a wonderful outcome in light of that!

And as an aside, it does actually look like the new rules re rotations and less tolerance for OOB's now is making talent the key aspect of the game. Hence Freo, Richmond and other sides that relied on role-playing and extreme running are losing ground.

I did think Dawson would be awesome during that 2013 period when he was at his peak, but alas his body just wasn't able to survive the rigors of the game. And i think a bit of luck goes the way of the Hawks in one sense, Burgoyne's knee in 2009 was little different to Hamish in 2011-12, but one has played better career football at an older age, and the other became the next Mitchell White. That's the risk, and for every Burgoyne there's probably a dozen or so Jesse Smiths, McIntoshes, Whites, Peakes and such.

It's a very small sample size, but it looked to me like Richmond's three best players on the weekend were Riewoldt, Cotchin and Rance. Probably their three best pure footballers too.

thought the same. Rance should be kicked in the behind for that suspension

Yes. Have to say I've changed my opinion of Riewoldt. He's worked hard to turn himself into a version of his cousin. Doesn't quite have the gut running yet...

You're forgetting such brilliance as Paul Corrigan, Daniel Lowther, poor Jason Snell (who was good enough to make it IMO)...

i thought menzel washington was cooked

thought taylor hunt was going to be a serviceable player, he seemed to be shitty after his arm? injury, and has done nothing at lolmond

Earlier this year i said Lincoln McCarthy wasn't ready for AFL. Happy to be wrong about this one.

I've been wrong on many things but I'm happy to concede I was dead wrong about Johnson being all but washed up.
I thought he would merely do what he was doing for us in his final season, 17-20 touches and a goal or more per game but nothing like the player he was from seasons ago.

6 rounds into this season, he's a new man and playing some of the best football of his career.
Over 21 touches & near 3 goals per game.

How about how Hawthorn are being pummeled by the Giants and we only lost by a small margin?
