Cant understand this at all mate, id rank Blitz in our top 5 most valuable. He is learning at an enormous rate and must give oppositions a head ache. Started at 4 centre bounces against Port yet still finds the ball regardless, his third man up is the best in this biz.
he has played better football this year then last year so far albeit he was ordinary against the Bombers. Even gave him the five votes one week. He is now one of our best 22 mids but isn't in our top four mids at this point. Also useful as a second ruck if we need him and could probably play a third man defensive role if we had a few injuries down back. Is a valuable contributor who has some X factor but that is all he is at this point. Continues to improve so hopefully he gets even better.

Are we watching the same player? He won our BnF last year playing ruck. Of course hes going to look better as an around the ground mid. Hes a gun not just X Factor.

Will improve though youre right on that one :thumbsu:

I thought that Menzel wouldn't play again after his 4th reconstruction (very pleased to be wrong on that one)
I thought Hawkins was pretty useless at the end of 2011, and wanted him traded
I thought Smedts would come good some time
I thought Motlop had lost interest in the club mid last year and wanted to be traded (signed a new contract a few weeks later)

I really thought early on GHS would be a 200 gamer but it doesn't look like he'll make it there with us anyway. I said the same after seeing a couple of Thurlow's games also and I'll be on the money there.

Decent thread. Many similar ones to others...

I was convinced Gary Ablett Jr wouldn't go.
I was convinced after 2010, losing GAJ, Bomber, was time for a rebuild and we need to radically change to a conservative / defensive game plan.
I thought we'd struggle from 2008 onwards without Matty Egan in the team.
I thought Chris Scott was a poor choice over some assistant coaches. I think he's great.
Also thought Bomber should have been sacked end of 2006.
Brett Spinks was that key forward we were missing.
Motlop wasn't going to re-sign mid last year.
Podsiadly was a daft pick up.
Ryan Bathie was a money-ball pick up (I knew his dad, so I was biased)

Well, I've previously mentioned some of my howlers in this thread but for those who felt that was TLDR;

- possibly my biggest call that has backfired spectacularly is when I suggested that Jimmy Toumpas would be better than Travis Boak (after watching on Sat. night that looks so wrong it isn't even funny anymore - would love to know what happened to him because he was a jet as a 17 year old, no seriously, a jet)
- questioned whether Dangerfield was really that good (so glad to be proven very wrong on that one)
- told anyone who would listen that Jordan Schroder, Tom Gillies, Cam Eardley and Tom Allwright were all going to make it at league level
- was very bullish on Jordan Lisle (whose AFL career amounted to very little) in his draft year

Some others;

- was quite a fan of Peter Bampton (who went undrafted)
- felt the McIntosh trade was good (I could argue that his injuries prevented confirming or refuting this one but the counter-argument is we never should have traded for him in the first place)
- called for Blicavs, early in 2014, to be dropped back to the VFL (looking back I can see why it was good he wasn't although I still think he was carried during that period. We have certainly reaped the rewards for that decision now)

Bound to be plenty of others if people want to go searching.

I thought that Walker was a spud
Then I thought that he was good
Then he lost me
Then he looked he could come good
Then he was a spud
Then I was confused
Then the cricket started ...

A sad one I got wrong - back in 2011 discussing with footy fans about whom from our trio of Rising Star nominees would be first to reach 100 games and I said Menzel :(

Be great to see him reach that number of games though
No shame there... hard not to imagine how good he could have been across the last few years without the knee injuries.

It was surprising but halfway against the Port game it suddenly came to mind that I'd been watching Menzel hit the contests hard without wondering whether he was at risk of injury. It was the first time I'd felt fully comfortable watching him play.

I once said Guthrie was vanilla and Murdoch looks the better prospect. Think it was the end of their rookie season.
Guthrie is vanilla but he's a premium vanilla flavour.

Plenty of bad calls by me, but the one that sticks out the most was the game against the Gold Coast in 2011 where Hawkins was dropped and Vardy came in. I watched it with a Cats supporting mate and we both decided that Vardy was the future and we probably wouldn't see Hawkins win back his spot.

Travis Varcoe - just as he was establishing himself as one of Collingwood's most important players and reminding us what we had lost, his recent injury history reminded me he is still a liability.

I've been wrong so many times I can't remember them all

The worst I can remember on the top of my head is when I predicted 140 goals from the Hawkins-Clark-Stanley combo in the 2015 pre-season

And early last year I thought that the Simpson McIntosh combo would solve our problems in the middle

I backed Cameron Thurley, Brown, Gamble, Hogan, Walker, Jansen, Cowan and many others

Speaking of Jansen. Anyone know how he is doing?

Guthrie is vanilla but he's a premium vanilla flavour.
If Guthrie is Vanilla he's the $850/kg vanilla bean pods rather than your nasty $3 per bottle "essence".

/torturous metaphor.
