Massive shout-out to the young studs in the video below who led the way, along with the late great QS , to get a groundswell of support that resulted in: a) the full-time return of the wings (2016); b) the return of the peril as our clash (2017); and c) the rightful return of our original colours (2018).

Because the AFL has an archaic rule left over from when it wasn’t a professional league that the away team must wear white shorts. A rule that made sense in those times, because away jumpers weren’t a thing.

Now that every club must have a clash uniform, there’s no need for it, especially when they pick and choose when to apply it.

‘The away team shall wear white shorts…. Unless Geelong are the home team, in which case Geelong wear white because their jumper is predominantly white. (We won’t apply that same rule to North Melbourne though, they can wear blue shorts with their white jumper and the away team can wear white even though it just creates more clashes than it solves). And while we’re at it, red shorts are light enough that they might as well be white shorts, so if Sydney or Gold Coast wear their red shorts then the away team can wear their coloured shorts too, AND we’ll let Sydney and Gold Coast wear red shorts as the away team just cause why not?’

It’s so breathtakingly simple!

That could very well be part of the reason as well. Away jumpers didn’t really become a thing until the late 80’s AFAIK (happy to be proven wrong though)

White shorts are still used in most amateur leagues for the same reason, can’t remember ever seeing a local footy team with an away uniform.

The point is, they’re outdated and they create more confusion than they solve these days.

It was a clash jumper in ’87 and '88, but part of the way through '88 we swapped to it completely and the gold jumper never came back.
