Here's a question for everyone:

If someone put a lego set in front of you, would you leave it alone or would you build it?

i've kind of collected as much as i want to collect at the moment, or can be bothered to. i don't really have much of an interest in the modern stuff, so it would probably have to be like pre-2000 or something, maybe older. i like the bumps and holes and the way it promotes imagination. probably technic as well. 80's era space/legoland, other things here and there. i will happily take other people's second-hand played with stuff, and obviously played with, like dents etc. less enthusiastic about faded lego.

and the practicalities of it. i'd look at the set in front of me and think, well i'll get to that never. the lego i've bought up until i 'finished' buying, i didn't put much together at all. just second hand stuff. i'm kind of halfway through figuring out what bits are missing from the second hand sets that i bought, checking off what i have from the set lists in bricklink.

i don't have any compunction about keeping the box pristine or anything like that, if that's the question. as a person who has collected some lego, i'm torn between the sorting tendencies of an adult, and mixing up all the sets like a kid to make things out of ideas books ala

I took photos of what I have as I was losing track of potter when looking at the latest stuff

30 Potter sets ranging from the big down to the small
These would be from the last two odd years, everything pre those 2 years is built in storage or still in boxes in deeper storage.

Then
Delorean, ranger, tumbler, landrover, blue kombi, ford gt.

bugati, batmobile, green mustang all medium sized

Piano, fender guitar, bonsai, orchid, 5 speed champs

The Certified Stores have their "spend $400 get $100 gift card" promo on again for 8th and 9th August. Worth considering if you have your eye on any exclusive sets that wont be available discounted for a while (if ever). For some weird reason though like last time it's only available online for delivery orders, so you have to pay postage which can be significant for larger sets (Flat rate of $12.50 applies for orders under 3kg only).

I've seen the Captain Ametica shield in person. Still tempted lol!! Its kinda funny as I've seen pictures of some builds that don't do them justice (in terms of pictures looking ugly but the display looks great once you see it physically). I was interested in it hearing about it, saw it and thought it looked too LEGO-Y lol. But in person it appeals to me.

Also will probably get the mini Lego Batwing ($50-$55 at most places).

If you're a fan then I reckon it's a great display/conversation piece. I don't think the build would be particularly interesting though.

I've just ordered the Space Roller Coaster ($129 amazon/Kmart) which looks like fun. I have the Pirate one which was a great build for the price (I paid $69 for that, it had an RRP of $119 just 5 years ago. Shows you how much prices have shifted in that time).

I think I've used a dark grey flat 3 pin plate instead of a black one once in 30 years

You'll be fine
It's not a Lego build unless I make a serious error in step 10 which isn't discovered until step 547 ;). This is particularly true with Technic, and from what I can tell the UCS Falcon has quite a lot of that.

I've been fortunate, I haven't made any major, major mistakes since I started building bigger sets. I put 2 "screw" bits upside when building the McLaren that didn't reveal itself til 200 steps later, but some heart in mouth bending allowed me to fix them.
